Female musicians

Captain
Seriously, are there any female musicians who play progressive thrash metal or progressive rock/metal. You see when I hear about female musicians in the media they seem to follow a typecast thing of either being folk singers or electro clash artists who are optionally kooky and it just bores and dissapoints me in that it seems that these are almost the genres they're confined to playing in and they have to be quirky etc even though its pretty fake. What I would like to see are progressive metal female musicians, this would be totally different and cool as folk, singersongwriter and electronica genres are crap.

jeez whats will all these metalcore bands, I want some scandanavian female fronted wildly progressive rock, not metal by numbers. I hate kerraang all that shit they play you know, because all they play are bands that scream in that valley accent with overly produced guitars. I want something totally uncommercial, completely progressive ala rush/meshuggah/king crimson and female fronted or this a genre that girls aren't just meant to do? Are we to be subjected to a decade of lilly allen and florence and the machine clones? The only "progressive" female artist I can think of that I would rate alongside the very best of male artists is Bjork. She kicks ass.

Arch Enemy have a female vocalist. And they're Swedish.

Lacuna Coil is female fronted, and they're awesome.

I second this. Cristina has an amazing voice, and everything else

If you're talking about female singers vs "musicians", most of my symphonic metal collection has female singers with opera quality voices or near to it.

After Forever
Amberian Dawn
Epica
Leaves' Eyes
Nightwish
Sirenia (4 different singers over 5 albums)
Within Temptation

Unsun is a Polish metal band with a female lead singer, but are closer in style to Lacuna Coil than the bands I listed.

Thirded on Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation and Nightwish (I prefer their new singer even though her voice isn't as 'technically' good as the old one).

I was put off by the one Unsun song I heard by the singer sounding a little bit too much like she was singing words - in English - she didn't understand for some reason.

You will all bow before the Great Kat or she'll tear your genitals off with her bare hands and reattach them in a way that would be even more painful.:scream:

The girl in Unsun is probably very Polish, so her English is going to sound a little too articulated sometimes. Similar to Klaus Meine of the Scorpions (even though he's German) & the ABBA girls.

I actually think she sounds a little like Debbie Gibson every now and then on the album, but not often enough to be a turn off. She just has that kind of voice.

As far as Nightwish, I prefer Tarja, but I like Anette too, and NW is really Tuomas' brainchild, so the music is going to be whatever he wants it to be no matter who is singing.

Sirenia is the same way. The style has been consistent even through 4 singers, though with the last 2, it's been more of a traditional "lead singer" type deal.

My favorite Proggy female fronted band is Coheed and Cambria.

That Claudia Sanchez chick has an awesome voice and she isn't half bad at guitar either :)
