PREDATORS:
A group of hardened killers are hunted on an alien planet in producer Robert Rodriguez and director Nimród Antal's entry into the popular sci-fi action franchise. Mercenaries, murderers, gangsters, and convicts, they were the most feared men on Earth. But now they're a long way from home, and when the predators become the prey, fearless mercenary Royce (Adrien Brody) prepares for the fight of his life. And he's not alone, because Mexican gangster Cuchillo (Danny Trejo), Israeli Defense Forces veteran Isabelle (Alice Braga), notorious mass murderer Stans (Walton Goggins), Russian Special Forces operative Nikolai (Oleg Taktarov), RUF death squad member Mombasa (Mahershalalhashbaz Ali), and sword-wielding Yakuza Hanzo (Louis Ozawa Changchien) are all armed to the teeth, and out for blood. The odd man out is Edwin (Topher Grace), a once-prominent physician whose career came to an end following a big scandal. When the motley crew encounters Noland (Lawrence Fishburne), a resourceful human who has somehow managed to survive on the alien's hunting grounds for some time, they prepare to take the ultimate stand against the most powerful Predators yet.

Starts Friday, July 9, 2010!

I'm looking forward to it. Despite liking the Predator design, I don't feel it has ever been done much justice on screen. The original Ahnold picture is pretty mediocre in my opinion, the Danny Glover sequel is a little better (but excessive), and the two crossover movies with the Alien franchise embarrassing.

So far, the reviews for this one have been fairly positive, and the talent involved both in front of and behind the camera looks good. I'll probably see it tomorrow for my brother's birthday, if it's playing.

Glad to see the reviews are holding up pretty well on RT. I'm sure it'll end up around 50% or so in the end, but that's still a hell of a lot better than the last few movies! lol

I like the original Predator. Not to the same degree as, say, the Alien films, but certainly better than the AVP crossover disasters. Predator 2 was OK, it had some good scenes, but I'm not all that bothered about it either way.

Predators seems interesting from what I've seen. The human characters are not a 'team' like Arnie's from the original, which should provide some antagonism, plus the alien setting might give it some variety.

Also, the director is called Nimrod! That's a positive sign if ever I saw one!

Roger Ebert gives it ** out of **** stars:

Never mind. The movie is mostly about our nasty heroes being attacked by terrifying antagonists in incomprehensible muddles of lightning-fast special effects. It lacks the quiet suspense of the first “Predator,” and please don't even mention the “Alien vs. Predator” pictures, which lacked the subtlety of “Mothra vs. Godzilla.” The resident aliens view everything in POV shots through what looks like a video monitor with a haywire color adjustment, and they appear in ways I will not go into.

There are always a few characters who get killed in attack movies like this. What confuses me is why they don't all get killed? Think about that warthog again. If that thing hit you at 20 mph and got you down on the ground and all you could do was stab it with your knife, would you expect to have dialogue later in the film?

If the positive RT ratings hold up, Armond White should be giving it a condescending, negative review soon. ;)

Has anyone else read Marion Zimmer Bradley's Hunters of the Red Moon?

Great SF adventure novel. A childhood favourite of mine.

The scenario for this movie reminds me strongly of that book.

Only, with Predators.

The reviews are surprisingly good. I think I will check it out tomorrow.

I saw it a couple of days ago at a press screening and thought it was pretty good. It has a certain cheesy B-movie feel and some pacing issues, but all in all it's a lot of fun and definitely the best Predator movie since the original.

Adrien Brody is much better than expected as the tough mercenary badass and the Predator Make-Up effects are great. Some of the other actors/characters are a bit weak and the final act is a bit of a letdown, but the beginning really rocks and the premise works wonderfully. I hope Rodriguez & co. get to make more of these.

my rating: 7/10

Is jungle really spelled "dschungel" in German?

That seems like a pretty roundabout way of making a "j" sound. :)

I'd put the first Predator right up with the first two Alien movies myself. Sure it's just a schlocky action movie at heart, but it's still beautifully executed, the premise is awesome, and it's moody and atmospheric as hell. Everytime I watch it, I feel like I'm right in that hot and humid jungle with them.

For some reason Predator 2 seems to be getting a lot of love lately, but despite being better than the AvPs, I still find it pretty dull and uninspired. And the "futuristic LA" is just completely laughable. The movie only gets good towards the end when Glover finally goes up against the Predator.

If the cast was better, I might be able to buy into the original, but Arnold is better suited playing robots than the robust action heroes he's usually saddled with. Carl Weathers isn't that convincing as Arnold's friend, and the rest of the cast seems to slide from there (Shane Black! Is that really the best way Joel Silver could keep an eye on the production?).

Perhaps I'll give it another chance later today, though, in anticipation of the new one (which is being savaged by Metacritics more selective line-up of critics, but is getting somewhat of a pass at Rotten Tomatoes).

Saw it tonight. Love it, as has been said (and probably will be again) best Predator film since Predator! Hard to give it an excellent, but better than better than average which I'll go with as it seems fairer.

I saifd before hand that what I really wanted it to be was better than AVP or AVPR (especially AVPR, AVP has some redeeming qualities at least) and that if it was as good as PRedator 2 I'd be happy. Well it's better than P2.

There are some lovely homages to Predator, especially when the end credits start. In fact the only thing lacking I'd say is that it's nowhere near as quoatable as Predator.

On the Predator/ Alien comparison I'd actually say Predator is a better film than Aliens. It doesn't feel anywhere near as dated.

One thing I have to ask: am I the only one who didn't see a xenomorph carcass? I had a friend swear to me that he saw one and another friend said the same thing.

The first Predator is my favorite Arnold movie. It's classic. It's really quotable as well, and I love All the Over the Top characters.

I haven't seen the 2nd film, although I may remedy that soon. The idea of the Predator in the city doesn't do much for me, and I'm not a very big Danny Glover fan, but maybe I'm wrong.

In spite of my love for the first Predator and Arnold, I like the first few Alien films far better.

I didn't see one, and whenever we were in the Predator camp I was looking!

There was a skeleton that had a kind of elongated skull, but it didn't really look like an Alien imo.

I thought the burning skull when they entered the camp was an Alien. Also:

It was so awesome to see another alien species! Finally, after 30 years its nice to get a 3rd member of the galaxy.

Yeah shame it didn't last long

I didn't see one either.

I thought it was pretty good, not excellent but good. There were some funny lines and good kills. I really liked the way the Predators were revealed as well.
