People getting all bent out of shape about something said online

Okay, so I sometimes visit this site where you post hip hop beats you've made and battle them against other users' beats. I rated this guy a 1 for his beat entitled "The Myth." http://www.rocbattle.com/forums/member.php?u=59921

Scroll down his player and listen to it. He basically uploaded a Rush song and called it a "beat." So I rated it one star out of ten. He chops it up a little bit, but it sounds like a cd skipping or something. It's bullshit! So he gets all bent out of shape and says I'm an asshole. I didn't know I was supposed to give a high rating automatically to any old piece of crap somebody uploads whether it deserves it or not. The funny part is that he expects someone to pay 50 bucks for that. :guffaw: Good Lord, they should make people pass some kind of test before they're allowed to use the internet.

It seems to me most samples are pretty recognizable.

And if people had to pass a test to be on the Internet, the Internet would be a lonely place. :rommie:

If you listen to something like the Beastie Boys' "Paul's Botique," the sampling is a work of art. It's almost entirely comprised of samples. Like, hundreds of them. Little snippets here and there, all combined in interesting ways to make something completely original.
Okay, how about if we limit the test to people posting replies on Youtube? Lol. Reading those makes me worry about the future of the human race.

Am I understanding correctly that people get paid for these things?

I'm sure whoever holds the copyright on the Rush song in question would be pretty pissed to find out this guy is trying to sell their shit as his own.

"Beat," my ass.

You get paid if someone buys it, yes, but this guy is violating the terms of service by using copyrighted material. I'm sure Rush can rest easy, though. No one is going to pay for this guy's "beat." Especially not since he's charging 50 bucks for it. You could download the mp3 of Tom Sawyer off Amazon for 99 cents.:guffaw:
You've got to be halfway decent, like this guy, to sell something on there.

Of course, he's using some copyrighted stuff too, but I'm not sure who's liable, the site or the user.

Or IMDB. Crazy stuff there, too.
I don't even look at the comments on there. I use IMDB to look up an actor that I see on a movie or show and I'm thinking, "Where have I SEEN that person before?"

My favorite place to read insane comments is the entertainment section on that Stormfront white power website. It's so absurd, to think that people can live their lives like that. Someone will say, "I love such and such movie," And someone else will inform them that it was executive produced by a jew, and then they get all disappointed because they can never enjoy it again.
I headed straight over there after Obama won the election, because I knew they'd react like it was the end of the world. I was not disappointed. Sheer entertainment. Those people are going to die of heart disease from all the unnecessary stress their hatred puts on them.

rofl, funny you bring this issue up because I just had something similar happen to me yesterday.

I moderate a Mortal Kombat forum and this idiot posted a fake select screenshot for the new MK game coming out next year. We frown upon people posting fake news because it spreads very quickly and starts false rumours, etc., so I simply replied that he please not post any fakes and I closed the thread.

Well, didn't he go off in a rant and rave in the shoutbox and then decided to send me a PM going off even more. All over 'please don't post fakes here'.

I laughed as I laid down the banhamer.

No telling how many times I've been called an asshole or something similar online. I have yet to determine whether or not those people are crazy, or if I really am an asshole. Either way, people tend to judge you much quicker online than in person, often times making them the asshole.

Yes. There are some people who believe that everyone on the internet should behave like their own personal fan club, and tell them nothing but what they want to hear.

Incredible, I know. But true.

Not sure where they got that idea, because in my experience, the internet is nothing if not
brutal. But there it is.

Good Lord, they should make people pass some kind of test before they're allowed to use the internet.

The really scary part is that these same people are operating out there in the real world, some of them in critical jobs that require a good strong helping of common sense.

Really, what is needed is a 'thick skin' test. As someone who has posted a fair amount of graphic art online...if all you want to hear is that everything you do is perfect, 100% of the time, then you need to be sending emails to your mom. Not posting on these here internets. :p

And if people had to pass a test to be on the Internet, the Internet would be a lonely place. :rommie:
I don't know about that. Seems to me like that idea definitely deserves consideration. I would propose the test be conducted on the basis of spelling and grammar.

You clearly haven't met my Mum.

Ditto.

And I don't expect anything but rude and abusive comments from anything I post or display online. And trust me, I have taken my fair share of beatings. Just click on the link in my sig and see why. Not only am I a geek but I have this thing about supporting "black sheep"... the black sheep of Trek to be more precise. And from time to time, people surprise me with a kindness. I am never expecting it to be positive though. :rommie: I also don't get all emotional about things happening on the internet. I prefer to sustain my emotional well-being from my real-life rather from words on a screen. I think it is more healthy that way. (But I am not going to pass up a compliment, from out there or in here. :bolian:)

What I find crazy is when someone posts a video of say, their 9YO kid playing some song on a guitar or something, and people chime in with comments about how he sucks because his fingering is all wrong or how easy the song is to play. :guffaw:

I'm now imagining myself in the Earl Holliman role of the Twilight Zone pilot.

I highly doubt that we'd administer something as difficult as the Praxis tests.
The spelling and grammar thing would be tough enough these days.

I think that's true for something like feedback on a particular project, especially in a forum dedicated to a specific interest. In that case people should be looking for honest feedback and expect criticism (although there are different ways to criticize as well, some more helpful than others).

That can be expanded to other topics as well. We've all seen when someone posts an issue here seemingly looking for advice and does the equivalent of saying "la la la I'm not listening to you." But I do think the internet isn't entirely brutal; some of the strongest support and kindest words I've witnessed have been online.

Yeah, what's up with that? You'd think that with all the typing people do on a daily basis their skills would improve just a little bit. Instead, people from America communicate online as if English is a second language to them. No, scratch that. Third. I'm not some kind of grammar or spelling nazi, don't get me wrong. But people don't even use punctuation or say anything that makes sense.
