Rollercoasters: Friend or Foe

They are designed to scare us. Many of us are drawn to the sense of danger.

Some people just can't handle the feeling of helplessness.

Where are you? Is the rush too much?

OTOH, do you sit down, take the ride, and just tell yourself that smarter people than me figured all of this out, and I'll be safe.

How much do you rationalize the risk you are taking on your life?

I'm just wondering. Adrenaline is always an interesting subject.

I have no interest in them. They are not "scary" for me, they just makes me physically ill. I understand the attractive of the adrenaline rush, but between the chest-shattering tachycardia, the stomach-turning motion sickness and the knuckle-whitening pressure spike, I would rather avoid them.

Other people enjoy them, more power to them. I will rather stay down and enjoy my hotdog.

There are no roller coasters in Tasmania so I have never had the opportunity to ride on one :(

I fucking love rollercoasters, especially the wooden ones that knock the hell out of you, bend and wobble, and make you think the whole thing is gonna come apart and you're gonna fucking die. It's goddamn epic.

Yeah, not my thing; nor other amusement park rides. I would like to try skydiving, though.

What a desolate land...
We don't have any proper zoos either just some wildlife parks

and no proper passenger trains (excluding a few tourist steam trains).

This. The older they are, the better. Though I also have a certain fondness for the newer, aluminum coaster that corkscrew. The only ones I hate are the ones where you do a giant loop or two in the middle.

Love em. Main drawback: long lines.

Statistically, you're much more at risk on the drive to the amusement park than on a coaster.

Not fond of them at all. I have enough difficulty on stepladders, I certainly don't need to be thrown around while I'm off the ground.

what we call wildlife parks are like little zoos. Only local fauna in them except one does have 4 koalas (which aren't native to Tasmania). I think many of the animals in these parks are orphans rescued from the pouch after their mothers were hit by cars.

Tasmania, BTW, has the world's second tallest tree. Higher than any roller coaster is.

EDITED TO ADD - actually there is a place in Tasmania called Zoodoo. They mainly have local fauna (including introduced fauna) but also have camels, llamas, some monkeys, a couple of lions and a couple of tigers.

There also is a city park in Launceston that has Japanese macaques in an enclosure.

Interesting. Why?

It could certainly be argued that the difference between an amusement park ride and skydiving is a thin one.

BTW, I think that I should say that this guy(me) who is afraid of heights feels a strong need to go on at least a tandem jump.

Pretty much this. I'm not at all fond of heights or placing myself in the hands of fate or another. So if I can do that, that's a big 'fuck you' to, err, something.

I don't intend to make a hobby of it. But of course, one never can tell.

I scream like a little girl on them. Not my thing, though occasionally they can be fun with the right people. I hate some of the old or really rickety ones, though.

I never really got into roller coasters. I don't mind flying, but I'm generally not that fond of heights otherwise. It's a situational thing. :D

Like last summer at Hershey Park, I love roller coasters as long as I don't know what it does before I get on it.

With Storm Runner, I had no clue what it was like until I got on it. That way is better for me.
