Canadian Football League 2010: Anyone care?

What team do you want to see hoist the Grey Cup?

I seem to recall we've had CFL threads in the past, but no one seems to have started one yet. I may be the only one here who cares about the league, but I thought I'd throw this out there in case anyone does want to discuss the season.

Anyway, thoughts on the first few games? The Saskatchewan\Montreal tilt was, of course, completely insane, and as I have tickets to see the 'Riders and Als play in Montreal in about a month, I can't wait to see what happens in the rematch!

The other two games so far were less interesting overall, but they had their moments. Both the Argos and the Ti-Cats sucked, as you would expect, but both showed flashes of promise. I thought Toronto looked especially good defensively, and if they can get their offence working soon enough, they may actually be mediocre, for a change, instead of outright horrible.

The Bombers also looked like they have potential to surprise this year, but we'll have to wait and see how they look when they play a team that's actually good...

^ 2013 is when we're slated to get a franchise back. The deal to redevelop the land around the stadium and the stadium itself was very recently approved by City Council, so with any luck we'll have the resurrected Ottawa Rough Riders taking the field in a few seasons. :techman:

Longer term, there have also been rumblings of a Maritime franchise, likely based out of either Halifax or Moncton, so hopefully that comes together in the near future. A ten-team CFL would be fantastic.

Wouldn't Saskatchewan have something to say about that? ;)

Aaaaaaaaanyway. I'm certainly no football fan, but just for fun I picked Saskatchewan. For one simple reason: Most of the characters on Corner Gas (my favorite show) root for them. :techman:

I care, but since CTV/TSN grabbed the broadcast rights I haven't been able to watch a game since they don't stream them online... and I'm not paying cable to watch CFL games unfortunately.

I'm guessing the Argos still suck?

Yeah, they still suck.

I'll still be cheering for them, but really, Cleo Lemon is our quarterback?

The Ottawa Rough Riders, founded 1876.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders, founded 1910.

;)

Plus, it used to be that having a nine-team league with two teams named Roughriders\Rough Riders was part of the fun!

Also, firehawk, TSN is at least streaming their Friday Night Football, though unfortunately not all the games. Otherwise, I resort to... other means... to catch games. :shifty:

Some comedian had a funny bit about the two Roughrider teams. I still don't understand how that happened.

Also, do your "other means" involve live games or... well, "recordings" to put it lightly?

I've also heard of the CFL considering some US-based teams. Thoughts on that?

They tried that and around the same time as the XFL and it bombed. Their best bet is to just stay in Canada - Ottawa, Quebec City and an Atlantic based team.

Then again, other than the Roughriders, I don't think any of the teams now are making money much so who knows.

^ Live games, actually. PM me if you want the link.

Now I feel like a drug dealer...

Oh, and I remember Air Farce did a bit about the two teams. In the context of Don Ferguson being some government minister talking about a new knowledge test for Canadian immigrants and saying some sample questions:

"How many football teams in Canada are named Roughriders? ... would you like to buy one?"

How can there be a league with an odd number of teams? One team would always be left out. It's why our baseball leagues always have an even number.

Wasn't there an odd number in the NFL for a bit? If I recall, there used to be bye weeks for teams every single week (including week 1 and week 17) due to that.

There's no reason you can't have a league with an odd number of teams. You just have to structure the schedule correctly to give each team an even number of games.

The only thing weird it did was kind of mess up the playoff schedule. It's been ages so I don't remember how it worked, but they had something called a crossover where one team from a conference would jump over to the other for the sake of playoff brackets.

^ On the other hand, it did allow Winnipeg to play in the West instead of the East, which is perhaps the silliest aspect of the league right now.

Watching the Bombers/Argos game right now and came looking for a CFL thread. Cool. :techman:

We just came back from the Argos leading 16-0 to a 17-17 at the half. Two touchdowns and a field goal. Way to go Bombers!

Make sure to count how many Riders are on the field at all times. :p
