World Cup 2010 - South Africa Thread

Wow, Suarez took the bullet to give his team the most fleeting of chances, and on to penalties! Let's go Uruguay, finish off the dark continent already!

Normally I would say Ghana is dead now. Penalty shoot out is 99% a mental, psychological thing, and that finish can't be easy to recover from, but who knows...

That's incredible. Incredible. Really, I've seen a lot of football games, but that was unique. I don't know what to say. Wow.

I suspect Uruguay in general and Forlan specifically is not terribly fucking popular right now in Africa.
Suarez, I suppose?

Yes him too. But Forlan basically knocked out both South Africa and Ghana. ;)

But Suarez, I mean, the rules are what they are, but that was really borderline cheating, wasn't it? No way the red card&penalty kick was even close to being an appropriate punishment for the "crime" there.

You literally can't get any closer to getting into the semi-finals than Ghana there and still miss it...

On second thought, a red card and penalty doesn't seem quite like the right punishment for playing volleyball and denying a clear goal in the 120th minute.

Edit:

Yeah. Except it was deliberate cheating.

They showed no replays, but on first sight the free kick for Ghana before the hand situation was a joke, so it's only fair that in the end nothing came of it for them in my opinion.

As I said, they showed no replays and it wasn't the best of angles, but to me it didn't seem as if there was a free-kick worthy foul.

Well, in lots of sports intentional fouls end up being part of the strategy. Ever see the end of your average basketball game? I like Suarez's play because he used the rules to his advantage. That's a million times better than the constant dives where people are trying to draw penalties when there is often literally no contact!

I'm done with this lame sport. Screw it. They'll never fix this crap and the next World Cup will be just as lame.

A lot of soccer fans have used Basketball as an example, but look Basketball has a rule that specifically prevents this from happening called "Goaltending".

If it was a Ghana player on a breakaway and Suarez roughly tackled him before he could shoot, I might be okay with that. But this is just blatant cheating.

Yes, maybe it was cheating, but imo it wasn't lame, it was awesome, I'm still pumped. :D

I think most people who say they wouldn't want a player from the team they support to do the same thing in that situation - especially in hindsight when you know the result! - are not being quite 100% honest... ;)

And I'll just say this is why I want to like soccer but can't. You basically train kids to cheat in order to win.

I guess that's a philosophical question - what's the difference between just violating a rule (as is accepted in many situations in many different sports) and when is it cheating? Clearly there is such a line somewhere, but are you able to define it?

Wow. Two exciting matches today.

Firstly, great Holland won. At least this means Brazil can't take the title again, and maybe Holland's in with a chance now.

Secondly, am I the only one who feels Ghana were cheated out of a position in the semi-finals? A penalty kick is not the best method of deciding that, the goal should have been awarded with the red card on Suarez. All I can say is, Suarez had better have round-the-clock security for the rest of the time he's in Africa. Uruguay should have gone out this round. From the highlights I saw, Ghana were playing way better than them most of the game.

While you can't have a World Cup without controversies, I really don't like players who cheat for their own ends.

Yes, that was blatant cheating.

What's funny is that I generally ignore people who hate soccer because of the diving. Yeah, I hate diving and I think it's a cowardly tactic, but I excuse it because I just accept it as part of the game.

Look, do I blame Suarez for cheating? No. He knows the rules and he's probably been taught to stop a sure goal any way he can.

I blame soccer itself for allowing such a play to happen.
