Flying?

I hate airports. Disgusting vapid places full of tiresome people, overpriced food and gaudy shops. The security BS is overblown. Aeroplanes are even worse. Nasty food & wine regardless of class, uncomfortable seats, and even the air hostesses seem to have got uglier. The one saving grace are the video-on-demand services you get these days so at least you can while away your boring flight endlessly watching movies on tiny screens that seem designed to reflect as much glare as possible. Oh, and the headphones almost always have one ear not working.

I tend to only fly once a year (mainly because it's kind of tricky to get to somewhere vaguely subtropical in winter without doing so...) and never look forward to it. I usually fly BA, because they're the least-worst of an awful industry, but even there, one has to gamble that they're not going to be on strike that week.

Yeah, not a fan of air travel or any of the associated nonsense.

Yeah. I took sleeping pills on my last trip back to Canada and that was nice.

Anyone else like me in that I bring a new novel with that intention of finishing it on the plane only to get to page 200 or so and then do anything else like watching shit movies just to pass the time? I'm talking 15 hour flights.

First time I flew in '98, it was a redeye from SMF to O'Hare with a 3 hr layover before getting on they flight to Syracuse. in the first leg, I saw a thunderstorm from above it, beautiful balls of light in the darkness below!

And you'll see more interesting stuff in the daylight too, first time I saw irrigated fields that were round!

O'Hare at 3:00 local time that night: DEAD

Me and my grandma, before she passed away this April, flew mostly Southwest every summer to her family back east.

I think the one time we had a snafu with the changing of planes when we had to was when we flew Delta. Thankfully my grandpa and our travel agent were able to get us on another plane only 3 hrs later.

If you are a religious person this is where you start praying that both you and your checked bags change to the same plane.

And that your bags actually made it to the second plane at all. Had one trip where I made the change of planes and made it to Phoenix, however my clothes were still on the ground in Kansas City when I got to Phoenix.

Do you guys have Airline preferences? I could take a pick from a handful for my trip really.

United is the one I am going with at this point...but Delta, US Airways, American Airlines & Continental are also available.

I love Southwest. But it sounds like you don't have that as one of your possible choices.

I fly Southwest every time I can. The attitude among the employees is different there than at any other airline.

When Southwest isn't an option, I fly Continental or USAirways. Continental's planes tend to be a little newer and nicer.

That's the exception rather than the norm. Most airlines charge you through the nose for alcohol. I paid $6 for a 355 ml can of Molson on an Air Canada flight once.

Compared to a ballpark beer, that's chump change...

No shit! $9 for for a Coors is insane.

Airports can be a little confusing, yeah. But flying is grand.
I disagree, but maybe that's just because I don't like being pressed into an uncomfortable seat with way too little room for myself -way too close to strangers wearing way too much perfume (or not knowing the basics of hygiene)- for hours and hours...

The idea is pretty neat though ;)

Flying is generally ok. Mostly I hate not being able to have meals on long flights. Full flights definitely suck, but if the flight is not full, I can usually spread out a bit and just read or sleep the whole way.

Airports are just plain suck. I've yet to find one that is better than tolerable, though I think 90% of that is that I have yet to find a decently comfortable seat in one and I have a tendency to show up 90 minutes or more early for the flight. Add in the food and beverage prices and it can be really bad...

I know most don't like paying for high mark-ups for plane drinks and what not...but I would just do it cause I wouldn't want to carry food and drinks on a plane...seems tacky.

^ It's hardly uncommon. Tons of people take a drink or snacks on the plane when they board.

I don't feel right doing it...it may save money and all...but I accept any added cost even if I can't afford it.

^ Sometimes buying the snacks and drinks on the plane isn't too bad. I've been on a couple flights where they were actually pretty cheap, I guess it's more of a luck thing though.

I, personally, love the airport. I think that they're quite easy to navigate, and if you get lost, you can always ask any staff member there :)

There's nothing wrong with doing that unless you get some obnoxious smelly food or something.

I once got a burrito on a class field trip at a shop in the DC Mall that use to be the post office...anyway...I got back on the bus with it and everyone was complaining about the smell...it didn't smell bad to me or taste bad the few bit I had before tossing it to shut people up.

Stick with non-offensive sandwiches or something bland like that. Mexican food, Chinese food, Indian food, etc is all going to be annoying in close quarters.

^ Yeah, take a ham and cheese sandwich or something like that on board, and no one will bat an eye.
