The coolest fake ad for modern Doctor Who...ever

^I think he's referring to Rory's death scene and Amy forgetting him against her will.

Ah, quite possible. Thanks for pointing that out. For some reason I thought in was in a different episode. That was a great moment, I agree.

There was definitely something a lot more "romantic" about the RTD era, and you can see that very clearly in this video. I personally loved that approach, and I can understand why a lot of people would miss it.

But I'm also a HUGE fan of the quirkier new Doctor, and I just don't think he would fit very well into that storytelling style. This called for a different approach, and so far I think the "fairy tale" thing is working pretty well.

Can't describe it but the RTD era was definitely "fantastical"

-THE LOUD MURRAY GOLD MUSIC THAT TESTS YOUR SPEAKER SYSTEM!!!

-The "In your face" approach to proclaiming the doctor is the greatest thing to happen since Swiss cheese.

Of course, these days other characters aren't always giving big speeches about how Awesome the Doctor is because the Doctor is always doing that himself!

Twas it indeed. No worries though. :techman:

Good points about Human Nature/Family of Blood (which, if not for Blink, was the best of that season easily). Everything in that worked - the main plot, the chilling battle with the scarecrows, John Smith's breakdown, and the ending. Near-perfection.

The main plot of Cold Blood I can see your points. It worked for me for the most part - part of it was the optimism that the Doctor had, and how things seemed to be working... only for it to all fall apart. Amy and... shoot, I can't remember her name either... may not have been legitimately speaking for all of Earth, no, but this isn't the first time the Doctor's put somebody with a minor position of power in play to do something much greater - see Harriet Jones. And besides which, they were there, and could speak on behalf of humans better than the Doctor (despite what The Eleventh Hour showed us).

As to the population problem - as I recall, that was adressed, and the Silurians had a tech fix for it, no? Like... starships or something?

Of course, these days other characters aren't always giving big speeches about how Awesome the Doctor is because the Doctor is always doing that himself!

And look where that got him. ;)

Interesting how so many shots were taken of the fourth season, yet it focuses entirely on that whiny, overused Rose Tyler. Not one word of dialog from Donna, and only a one-frame shot of her? WTF? She was the best companion of the modern era. So much for the "coolest ad."

... no, it does not focus entirely on Rose. It focuses on Tim from "Human Nature," Rose, Martha, and Reinette from "The Girl in the Fireplace."

:barf:

Sorry, but that was just awful. I've been trying my hardest to forget the worst excesses of the RTD era. This just brought it all flooding back..

Seconded. At least Moffat seems to have got away from the fetishising of the Doctor whereby we keep getting it drummed into us how amazing or deep or whatever he is.

Steven Moffat said:
Hello, Stonehenge! Who takes the Pandorica takes the Universe! But, bad news, everyone, 'cos guess who?! Except, you lot, you're all whizzing about. It's really very distracting. Could you all just stay still for a minute? Because I. Am. Talking!

Now, the question of the hour is, Who's got the Pandorica? Answer: I do. Next question! Who's coming to take it from me? C'mon! Look at me! No plan, no backup, no weapons worth a damn! Oh, and something else I don't have: Anything! To! Lose!

So, if you're sitting up there in your silly little spaceship with all your silly little guns, and you've got any plans on taking the Pandorica tonight, just remember who's standing in your way! Remember every black day I stopped you! And then! And then! Do the smart thing:

Let somebody else try first.

Oh, yeah, it's a good thing that Moffat's gotten away from talking about how awesome the Doctor is. ;)

Seduff videos are always great I've followed that users videos for a long time now. Check out the I did it my way video about Tennants era that is THE BEST VID full stop :)

I've finished a Doc Who project earlier been thinking about posting it on here.

^When people watched? I take it you never visit the Viewer Ratings threads? :techman:

Actually reading that dialogue makes me appreciate Matt Smith even more. You can really see how much of a challenge it would be to deliver that speech the right way, and make it sound cool and exciting-- but somehow he pulled it off brilliantly.

The linked graphs make clear that ratings are definitely down, even more than I'd have thought. It'll look worse when they add "The Big Bang" in.

The article is working off overnight numbers that are as accurate as a blind man with a sniper rifle when it comes to Doctor Who. I've seen several articles on the internet and its shows the people writing this utter tosh either do no homework on there subjects or are stupid...probably both.

Am sick of people not understanding the ratings and anyone reporting on such ratings are idiots THE FINALS ARE NOT OUT for the last 2 episodes. All finals this year have seen massive increases, Doc Who share % are normally above 35% and beating in the entire day by Britian Got Talent or an ENG WC game.

BBC does not used ads to pay its way so the share is the big thing + I player and the I player numbers are the best for any BBC show so the execs are very happy. Weather + World Cup + Wimbledon means TV ratings are down but include I player numbers then the audience is not off by much from 2008 the last standard season of Who.

Ratings are delayed for episode 12 and 13 won't reach us till next week but both look to be 7 to 7.5 million before I player viewers, which will add 2 million within 30 days and around half a million from BBC 3 repeats. I do know episode 12 set a record for BBC HD airing of Doctor Who and the finale scored the highest AI index score of the entire season.

The Eleventh Hour
10.08 million and 41.7 % Share
86 Index Score

The Beast Below
8.42 million and 38.9 % share
86 Index Score

Victory of the Daleks
7.82 million and 37.4 % Share
84 Index Score

Time of The Angels
8.59 million and 41.2 % Share
87 Index Score

Flesh and Stone
8.50 million viewers and 38.2 % Share
86 Index Score

Vampires of Venice
7.68 million viewers and 35.0% share
86 Index Score

Amy's Choice
7.55 million viewers and 37.4% share
84 Index Score

The Hungry Earth
6.49 million viewers and 39.8% share
86 Index Score

Cold Blood
7.49 million viewers and 31.9% share
85 Index score

Vincent and The Doctor
6.76 million and 35.5% share
86 Index Score

The Lodger
6.44 million viewers and 30.7% share
87 Index Score

Does not include I player numbers so in short...

It's safe for as long as Matt Smith wants the job. :techman:

I couldn't care less about ratings. From my perspective the quality of the show is a big improvement under Moffat and we finally have a doctor who is much more akin to his former selves - that, to me, is all that matters.

But this Doctor isn't madly in love with his centuries-younger companion who couldn't possibly hope to match him in either life experience or intellect. Where's the fun in that?

And what about the linked article to when figures were even more down, during Tennant's first year, those "good old days"? You had the same scaremongering in the press as you do now, as evidenced by your (btw, totally unbiased pick of) headline, and the show turned out alright.

Plus, what Jax said.

It makes some sense that switching the Doctor would lose some audience, doesn't it? I mean, he is the main star after all, and especially after somebody as popular as Tennant steps down.
