Websites changing formats for no reason

Change is the constant in life, my friends. Web life is no exception to that. I don't understand why people always get in an uproar when things change.

That is happens doesn't mean it's good.

I like The Big Bang Theory-Sheldon's view on it. "Thet say it's good, but it's not". Or something like that, I'm quoting out of memory.

The worst offender of this is Facebook. I understand the need to improve (And I do like change, to spice things up) but they make so many unnecessary improvements and add ons (Chat anyone? ) that it's not as good as it once was.

IMDb probably isn't the best example of change for the worse although I can't think of anything they've genuinely improved on in the last several years.

As an amateur web designer myself I'm not completely immune to the desire for making new stuff for no good reason. It's lost on many people that content is king and navigating through that content with ease should be the primary focus of the designer.

Back in 2005, I read a great article which addressed this issue and tempered my desire to completely redo my website without purpose. It advocates more purposeful and subtle changes to one's website.

It's not a problem when things change for the better. It's a problem when things change for the worse.
^This.

And, yes, change isn't bad at all, but when web designers discovered that people started having monitors of the 'widescreen' sort (in order, for instance, to be able to have a sidebar open while watching content on some page or other) and began designing websites that stole that extra monitor real estate we'd just invested in it made me want to go on a killing-spree! :klingon:

No, but it's the thought that counts.

I happen to have one of those widescreens on my laptop. It's not by choice, I was assigned this POS Lenovo by the Borg Collective that is my college (it has my number on it, even). I must say it is the dumbest waste of liquid crystal ever. 99.99999999% of things that run 'full screen' just add black bars on the sides of the screen, COMPLETELY negating the reason for having it wide screen to begin with.

Sounds like a Steve Jobs innovation to me....

Steve Jobs: "Does it do anything?"

Engineer: "Nope."

Steve Jobs: "Does it look cool?"

Engineer: "Not really. Actually it looks rather stupid."

Steve Jobs: "Is it different?"

Engineer: "Well, yes, but difference isn't always good. The Edsel was diff-"

Steve Jobs: "You're fired. Ship it out. Make sure not to test it, either."
