World Cup 2010 - South Africa Thread

If Argentina score a third, game over. Hopefully then the Mexicans will start kicking lumps out of them.

Wow, almost a half-time brawl. And I don't know whether I should laugh or cry over Klinsmann's supposed insights into the Mexican mentality because of his Mexican neighbours in California...

Both England and Mexico have been mugged by inept officiating today. Absolutely disgraceful. I doubt it'll get anything of tech into the game though. At least ban these idiots from ever officiating ever again though. Fucking absurd that this can be allowed to happen in the World Cup.

Germany would have killed England off regardless, however.

Beautiful goal from Hernandez.

The more that Sepp protests that Fifa will not introduce technology, the more out of touch with reality they appear. When you have the likes of Cricket, Tennis, Rugby etc all using technology it seems ludicrous that we can't for football.

We've had two shockers today, but let's not forget the two perfectly good goals that the US had chalked off against Slovenia and Algeria.

There should be another official in front of a video screen who's in radio contact with the referee. At least on the top level. There's really no excuse for those blatantly wrong decisions we saw today.

They certainly need to thoroughly review the events of this WC in the cold light of day afterwards. Despite a great occasion, this WC has turned into a bit of a shambles from an officiating POV.

Tonight summed up the utter ridiculousness of the situation for me, in the Mexico game, the first Argentina goal, they showed it on the big screen for all to see, and you knew within seconds that a mistake had been made. By that time though, the goal had been given and couldn't be reversed. Utterly ridiculous.

I really wonder, though, why there are so many wrong and important decisions this time around. Has the game become so fast or what?

Ah England...Why do I ever expect you to come good? We appear to be the anti-Argentina. We had a great qualification then go shit, they had a shit qualification and are now great!! On this evidence our next manager should be Gazza.

We were poor, but Germany's defence was shakey, and if that goal is given we go in 2-2 and the game changes. We were woeful though, no excuses. I dont know where we go from here. On the one hand Capello's tactics have been woeful, but I dislike the idea of players effectively getting rid of him. I don't hate Heskey as much as some, he has his uses but putting him on today at that moment was a terrible decision.

Anyway what I'd like to see...

1. A manager who can actually speak English. I'm not against a foreign manager per se but they have to be able to communicate with the players.

2. Create a team, even if that means dropping superstars to play some championship level defensive midfielder. The days of Gerrard and Lampard both having to play have to end.

3. Fuck 1966. Seriously the country needs to stop harking back to it. No more stupid adverts where Rooney's knighted and everyone names their kids Wayne, no more kit kat crossed fingers and 'do it for Bobby' (Moore, Robson take your pick). First thing Cloughie did at the Baseball Ground was take down all the photos of old players and removed the trophies. The past doesn't matter, only the future.

4. Accept we aren't the greatest team in the world, that quarter finals of a major tournament is a good result and that whilst we can punch above our weight, we have no god given right to win.

5. Roy Hodgeson/David Beckham

Right, I'm officially switching alliegiance.

*changes avatar*.

Let's hope they get past their match on Tuesday. I won't be able to see it, but good luck to them.

On tonight's match, a good fight Mexico, but Argentina got the expected result. I really don't know who'll win on Saturday, considering Germany's performance tonight.

Really down about England, I know we were the poorer team, I am just really annoyed how football is the only major sport that seems not to use video replays for gods sake the technology is there the game needs it to many decisions are hurting to many teams.

ok if England had gone in at half time 2-2 then the game would have been totally different, england may have lost especially the way we were playing but still Fifa sort it out :scream:, i mean it felt like the only person in the entire ground who didnt see it go in were the officals it feels once again england get another harsh decision against us and we go out.

As for the England team we were hopeless, send lampard off i dont ever want to see the man in an England Shirt again, carrigher, heskey, can all just go as well we need to re group and build a youthful hungry side with the likes of Joe Hart and jack Rodwell,

anyway from now on im supporting Chile for there over the top style of attacking

I wouldn't go quite that far re Lampard. Nobody did great but he did score a legitimate goal and looked dangerous from set pieces, so close with that one that rattle the bar. Personally I thought he looked more use than Gerrard (but he was out of position).

All that needs to happen is that Gerrard/Lampard is either or...actually not even that. If neither are in form neither should play. Same with Rooney same with any of them.

Obviously a fair few of these players won't be around come 2012 and beyond, but there still has to be a place for experience (who was our best player, practically the only player to come out of the tournament with his reputation intact--aside from those who never got a chance-- David James, the oldest.)

I do worry about England now. All our goalkeepers seem really young, we don't seem to have another really top draw striker anymore if Rooney's not on song, we have a lot of nippy wingers but none who seem capabale of crossing with the accuracy of a Beckham. Who's the future central defence?

As for the manager. We've tried the bloke who's their mate, we've tried the authoritarian...I just don't know where we go from here. (Then again I remember hearing the same about Germany pre 2006)

In the last match, Johnson was overlapping Milner to get the cross/pass in, and failing. Reminded me of Beckham/Neville - the same thing used to happen there. A defender tries to do a winger's job and screws it up.

We should write off the 2012 European Championships already, and with that have our focus firmly on the next world cup. That gives you 4 years to effect a change.

Any player who's going to be too old for the next WC, get rid of them now. By bye Gerrard, bye bye Lampard, bye bye James, etc etc.

Get the youngsters in now and blood them. Bollocks to this giving them 5 minutes here and there in meaningless friendlies, let's get them into the thick of it starting with the Euro qualifiers. If we don't qualify then so be it, but FFS, let's do something.

We really need to get away from this mentality of picking the players based on reputation. Lampard, Gerrard and Rooney have all been useless in this WC. How anyone can speak of them in the same terms as Messi, Ronaldo etc is beyond me.

Sadly, I suspect that the FA will do what they always do. Fcuk all.

In terms of GK, I'd have no problem in stating Joe Hart as #1 right now. We've also got Ben Foster. GK position looks fairly safe IMO.

In terms of strikers, see my previous point on selection by reputation. Top English scorer in the Premier League was Bent wasn't it? In a sh1t team. Yet he still falls farther down the pecking order than Emule Heskey. How? It's a good job Zamora was injured otherwise he'd have been overlooked and disappointed as well.

We have plenty of decent young players. Thing is, we don't develop them or give them the opportunities at international level. Instead we clutch to the notion that Gerrard, Lampard etc will eventually come good. Let's not carrying on making that mistake. fcuk them both off and let's see what the alternatives are.
