Summer 2010 Anime

Another season is on the horizon now that all the Spring shows have wrapped up.

I may be taking a break this season to catch up on the noitamina shows I've missed (for no good reason to be honest). Although that's probably not going to happen.

I was going to post the full size chart, but it's pretty big I guess. Also, Strike Witches 2!!!!! ;)

"Legend of the Legendary Heroes" is possibly the worst title this side of . . . umm, give me a second here, I honestly can't think of one.

I totally agree. Awful.

I'll be going for:

Sekirei: Pure Engagement
Seikimatsu Occult Academy
Shiki
Highschool of the Dead

and some random OVA series too, but that's about it. The summer seems pretty barren except for the fact that there's more Sekirei which rocks and a few supernatural themed anime which I usually dig.

I was just thinking that myself. The Redundancy of Redundant Titles!

Nothing on the list looks remotely original (some of it just blatant rip-offs), or even all that interesting.

I might skip.

They got delisted from the exchange and merged with their corporate parent... it's why they haven't really done anything this year.

Well, this might be a short thread then. :(

Also people here should watch Sekirei and it's sequel this upcoming season. It's a pretty cool combination of action elements with a harem show. Lots of interesting action, comedy, and fan service. You can find the first season streaming free and legal like from Funimation at that link.

Some of them are but sizes vary.

Big ones, small ones, some as big as your head.

I watched some of Sekirei. Maybe I'll finish it off. Unfortunately, this season seems to be less interesting than last season :(

High School of the Dead was an awesome manga, so at least that should be decent

Also, reading through most of these new shows, it looks like most of them will violate my "Childhood Friend" ban, so that eliminates them.

Alright, trailer time:

High School of the Dead
(Looks epic. Also it's a Madhouse work and they're my favorite studio so I'm there.)
Seikimatsu Occult Academy
(Seems like it could be interesting.)
Sekirei: Pure Engagement
(Because I enjoyed the first season and want to see the story continue.)
Shiki
(I'm giving this a shot purely for the reasons that it's supernatural and the music is by Yasuharu Takahashi of Hell Girl and Naruto Shippuden fame.)

High School Of The Dead looks good, just because the basic premise could have been plucked straight from George Romero's mind. As for the rest, the summer looks rather barren for a mecha anime fan, like myself.:(

Isn't Basara that mecha basketball thing... or am I thinking of something else?

I think it's the samurai one based on the video game
Basara is a post-apocolyptic adventure, Basquash is the mecha basketball anime. I keep hoping for more from the Macross franchise or perhaps an Engage Planet 2, big Kawamori fan here. I'd also like to see a new Getter Robo series along the lines of the recent Shin Mazinger series or even a new Grendizer series along the same lines. I think, in reality, I'm just an old anime fan that misses the proliferation of great anime from the late '80s/early '90s.

Basara is not a post-apocalyptic story, it's a period peace during the Japanese Warring States with enormous artistic liberties taken such Oda Nobunaga as a Dark Lord and Tokugawa Ieyasu commanding a giant robot.

I hope if there is another Macross, Kawamori isn't on it. I feel that he's pushed the least interesting aspects to the forefront (music and romance) and in the process eliminated any sort of dramatic tension in the franchise. At this point, humanity is just steamrolling through the galaxy without any real trouble, so it comes down to music or romance to carry the plot, which aren't really interesting.

As for the great anime proliferation, I too miss it. There are fewer options as far as genre is concerned; there's little scifi aside from Gundam, Macross, various mecha shows, and a few others, not a lot of interesting fantasy or historical setting shows, tons of slice of life stuff, and lots of romance stuff. It just goes to show how badly the pandering to the otaku fanbase has limited anime; I wouldn't be surprised if anime studios try to get more video game companies to make anime movies/anthologies, since its something different for them to do.
