Is a Hollywood liberal conspiracy keeping 'Red Dawn' from release?

So you think the Chinese are down on Bond too? You think they have a different reason for not releasing each of the movies they aren't releasing?

Who knows. With Bond, it really could be the money. With this film, though, it's probably just the Chinese thing.

Its a fun action-fantasy. Regular joes fighting "the man" who is opressing them is a standard and often told story trope.

I was hoping that it was just being held back because it's a ridiculously dumb idea for a movie.

Suspension of disbelief doesn't come in to it here, unless the Chinese armed forces have access to magical wizards who can transport their troops in to the United States because their Navy certainly isn't up to the job.

You see, invading the United States would involve somehow getting past their navy - which is larger than the next thirteen navies combined - and having enough ships left afterwards to land the troops (which would have to number in the millions), equipment and supplies necessary to successfully invade a country of 260m people where civilian gun ownership is common.

The story is asinine, the original movie sucked, and here is some news for all the conservative assholes (redundant) out there - no one, absolutely no one, is interested in invading and occupying our big mac stuffed obese gun toting chicken shit church dwelling trailer park living ignorant asses. Believe me.

QFW 100X!:techman:

Also, here's some other facts about China doing anything to America economically and militarily (based on a rebuttal of comments about America's place in the world made by Fareed Zakaria);

China's first real problem is that its government isn't all that stable. If nothing else, the current economic mess has proven that, leaked government reports and memos have shown that the government is deeply afraid that if the economic situation gets any worse they will be facing the real threat of civil war. The government doesn't really have the loyalty of the population, it has their acquiescence because it has improved the standard of living and started to create a middle class. But once that standard of living stops growing there is still the middle class who will turn to politics, and when they do...

2. The next real issue is simply that of time. Even if China managed to continue growing it's economy at a rate of 10% per year it still wouldn't reach parity with the current US economy until around 2025-2030. And that assumes that the US economy doesn't grow at all, if the US maintains it's historic rate of growth then the time frame until parity becomes 2050 or so. And realize that this is incredibly generous to China. If they manage to maintain current growth rates even another decade it would be a miracle. If you figure 6% growth per year parity with the current US isn't reached until around 2050 and parity with the US of the same time isn't reached until around 2100.

3. China's next big problem is the same as the EU's, demographics. The 1 child policy, the massive imbalance of men to women, and the pollution are all making it likely that China sees a staggering drop in population.

All of these factors, plus a navy that's complete crap, and the prospect of America stopping the buying of anything from China itself make what happens in this new version of Red Dawn highly unlikely.

If the filmmaker wanted, they should make a version of Red Dawn that's all about a Second Civil War that launched by the Red States-and call that 'Red Dawn'. That's more likely to happen then anything else.

China is the big boogeyman now that Russia is out of the picture and it's as Dusty pointed out, a big stretch once you look into it beyond "Chinese," "billions," "military," "expansion/economic aspirations." China is in no position to invade us anymore than we are to invade them. Sure, we can toss nukes at one another but that's what M.A.D. is for. No one wants to start a nuclear contest because you're a loser too.

Terrorists don't count; they aren't a government (all the hoopla of government sponsored terrorists aside) no one wants to be known for setting off world war 3 and killing 2/3rd's of the world's population, including their own.

So Red Dawn just doesn't work as the realistic threat we're supposed to be fearing. It won't stop someone from arguing otherwise or from getting a movie with a similar theme done a thousand times over though.

Does either film explain exactly how these invasion forces get past our military? If enemy nations tried to send a fleet to attack IRL, we'd intercept them long before they get here.

Hollywood is run by businessmen. Who are rich. And therefore mostly conservative. And who care more about the bottom line than politics in any case, and generally won't care what message a film sends as long as it makes them richer. The whole "Hollywood run by liberals" thing is just another right-wing boogeyman. Sure, there are plenty of celebrities in Hollywood who are liberal (and we've got to outgrow this childish notion that that's a bad word), but there are plenty of others who are conservative, and in either case it's a mistake to confuse celebrity with power or authority.
The irony of conservatives dismissing Hollywood folks as liberals is that when a Hollywood conservative steps forward, whether they can string together words into sentences or not, they are immediately deified as some kind of larger than life figures. (Fred Thompson? Ronald Reagan? Ahhhhnold?)

In any case, the answer to the original question is no. There is no liberal conspiracy. And I'm a conservative.

If I recall correctly, in the original the cuban military infiltrated in through mexico and a combined soviet/cuban force took most of middle america. both coast remained under US control. somebody also nuked china for no apparent reason.

The movie was a lot of fun if you were in high school because it relies on the themes of school spirit and young rebellion to drive the movie along...I tried watching it recently and wasn't as entertained.

I can't imagine what enemy the remake has invade.

Actually, whoever put together the conspiracy the Red Dawn remake is being foiled by a liberal agenda has put too much thought into it.

What fucking nonsense that is. I live in a red state and there's certainly no attitude that we're going to rebel and put all the po' widdle blue states to the sword. Jesus what fucking paranoia!

With respect, Chris--I beg to differ on that. You'd be suprised how many super-rich are on the left. George Soros, for one.

And yet movie after movie with a left-leaning message somehow gets the Academies and Golden Globes, despite terrible showings at the box office.

Not that big a mistake. Marketing and PR tend to be central elements of power.

Also, celebrities are mostly rich. By your previous argument, they must therefore be mostly conservative...?

Now...I don't think for a MOMENT that it's a conspiracy. Just a current, long-lasting, increasingly irritating trend.

The Dark Knight and The Pursuit of Happines are two great moves that indicate that it isn't any conspiracy. Hollywood's finally getting more balanced--because it realizes the box office demands it. The trend is changing.

Box office earnings do not equal quality.

The Dark Knight is not a conservative film. This comes from the director's mouth.

Commercial films don't need awards, the receipts alone say everything that needs to be said. Or, if you're unusually discerning, you could factor production/marketing costs in there too and use profit - perhaps even proportional profit for the truly avant-garde - rather than revenue as an indicator of worth. Instead of whining about awards being given to less than commercially spectacular films, real Americans should scorn such structures entirely and embrace the dollar as the only meaningful metric of worth.

Yes indeedy, Hollywood never makes movies based on ridiculously dumb ideas.

I wish they'd make more dumbshit right-wing wish fulfillment movies. It's a change from all the dumbshit left-wing wish fulfillment movies they churn out.

Yeah yeah yeah, well, then the commie hippie terrorists will have to be from outer space.

And it's 300M. Half with guns. Don't make that mistake again.
