Because she's the first teenager, ever, to say she's been doing something "her whole life" and they know what they're doing.

On another message board I visit someone said her parents probably think with that many kids it would make for great tv if Abby died and then one of her younger siblings announced they were sailing around the world in her name and to avenge her death!
Would make for an even better book and movie then anything Abby could do. This of course assumes the younger sibling didn't die but hey if they did then just send another kid out to sea. You've got eight chances.

There's general life experience, which she of course doesn't have as much of as an adult, and then there's expertise in one specific field, in this case sailing. In sailing she likely has more experience than 99% of adults, so your age = lack of experience argument falls flat in that respect.
You can grant that some teenagers can and frequently do exceed adults in certain fields, yes?
Oh, that's just ridiculous. Whatever people think of the parent's allowing their daughter to do this, to suggest that they consider her expendable in the pursuit of personal fame is baseless.
That's obvious. If you want to know anything about using your cellphone or iPod, just ask any fourteen-year-old!

Talk to the average man on the street - people are SICK of this insipid little bitch and the overload of media attention she has been given.
It's almost a certainty she will be named "Young Australian of The Year" next Australia Day.
It was foolhardy and, in my mind constituted parental neglect and they should be prosecuted.
Sick to death of the whole fucking affair and when ANYTHING comes on the telly about her we INSTANTLY change channels.

I don't know if you are Australian or not but here, since there's so few of us, we tend to "big up" somebody when they actually do something. They become SO overexposed it's ridiculous. She had like three ticker tape welcomes at different ports and the press were there to cover it every time with it televised live on tv.
It just became ridiculous and the end result is, besides the fact the entire endeavour was foolhardy, people are just OVER her.

Well, I can understand being frustrated over media coverage, it was just the choice of adjective when describing her.
I chose "insipid" very carefully because, if you have seen her interviewed that is EXACTLY how she comes across, giggling at questions and speaking in this high pitched girly voice. It just seems incongruous with "an experienced sailor who has travelled around the globe"(check out the controversy surrounding her attempt and apparently she was a few thousand k's short anyway!).
As for the "little bitch" part, that's just Aussie slang.
Older women are called "sheilas" while young boys are called "little bastards".
Hell, I've only just stopped my granddad from referring to aboriginal boys as "little black bastards", but he's old, so PCness doesn't(and shouldn't)apply to him.

Aside from the day of her arrival when (quite understandably) there was a certain amount of fuss made of her, the media reaction to Jessica Watson's feat wasn't anything particularly remarkable or over the top. Perhaps it was a bit different in Tulin's part of the country, but elsewhere the media moved on pretty briskly.
