World Cup 2010 - South Africa Thread

Good game. I was a bit surprised that North Korea did as well as they did, but their last-ditch goal was brilliant, and should really shake some nerves, despite not having won them the match.

If Brazil had walked away with anything other than a victory, we would have had jaws dropping everywhere, but this is as close a result as we're going to get for that.

If North Korea performs like this against Brazil, what are they going to do to Portugal or Ivory Coast?

That was brilliant! I guess the NK's aren't a "mystery" anymore. ;) Now they don't have to worry about being executed...yet.

Well, lost its interest somewhat after the first Brazil goal. Interesting game though, and if Portugal or the Ivory Coast play badly a draw with NK could be on the cards.

 The Group of Death® just got more interesting. Could North Korea be the Scotland of this tournament? ;)

I can definitely see C. Ronaldo getting VERY frustrated against NK.

That or score some nice goals from a distance.

I'd pay good money if someone would snap Ronaldo in half.

Irritating twat.

Iasius, that is one hell of an av!

Had an interesting little debate with my flatmate, as he thought that Australia would be bidding for the 2014 WC. I'm gonna have a good laugh at him, as I need it tonight (related to another code of football). He believes he heard it on the radio. I think he is a little confused.

i know it's Brazil. Heck it was announced in 2007. Australia has pulled out of 2018, as it's most likely shall be in Europe. 2022 shall between Australia and USA I think. But I'm gonna enjoy the Spain - Switzerland match.

Ah, ok. I haven't followed who's applying for the World Cup. Who are the favourites for 2018 then, England I assume, and Russia maybe? I know that Italy really wanted the Euro 2012 and 2016, are they going for the WC in 2018?

I don't know. I've not followed it myself, I just heard the Europe thing in a commentary during the Australia game the other day. I know England's bid went through a sticky patch recently after one of the guys running it said the Russians were likely to cheat - but from what I understand it's pretty strong still.

Apparently the English bid is still favourite, followed by Russia. FIFA have previously said that ideally they wouldn't go with a joint-bid which would effectively rule out a couple of the other bids, which would then leave the US as the only rival to England and Russia. Considering that the US had it 16 years ago (compared to our 50+ and Russia's never) I can't see them having a realistic chance. Besides, as others have pointed out, it's widely believed that FIFA will want a WC in Europe in 2018, given that it would then be 3 WCs since the last time there.

It's between England and Russia I think. Should be England, but it depends on whether Sepp wants to break more new ground and give it to someone who's never had it before.

No bid from Italy. I know there is a 2 joint bids from Portugal/Spain and Netherlands/Belgium. There might be another bid from Europe for 2018, and also USA for 2018. in 2022, it's bids from those bids from 2018 (depending on who gets the 2018 WC), plus Australia, Japan, South Korea and Qatar.

There were bids from Mexico and Indonesia, which were cancelled.

Congratulations to Switzerland. Although I'm genetically opposed to Swiss football I have to admit that this was a very, very impressive performance and obviously an excellent result. Good to take the arrogant Spaniards down a peg too.

While I doubt this means Spain is not going to make the next stage, it also continues to muddy any potential final predictions.
