TBBS Posters That Remind You Of Fictional Characters

Even if I do actually get to meet T'Bonz at Shore Leave (I'm still not sure I can make it), I'll always think of her as a Romulan. With a very large bottle of ale in her hand.

Trust me, if you see me that weekend, there will be a glass of booze in my hand. ;)

Uncreatively, I always think of Yeoman_Randi as Janice Rand. When I watch a TOS episode with Rand, I always think of the poster.

This is an interesting thread for thinking about visual rhetoric on internet forums; obviously, your avatar/signature can have a significant impact on how you're perceived in an internet community, sometimes exclusive of the content of your posts. (I recall, for example, a poster on a superhero forum being dismissed due to having a Daria avatar.) However, some of your comments also indicate the process working in reverse, in that text-based rhetoric can create mental images associated with a poster (for example, the poster who envisioned Holdfast as well-dressed).

Hmmm. I'm curious: how much do images impact your opinion of a poster as opposed to what that person writes on the forum? Is it more difficult, for example, for you to associate an identity with posters who have no avatar? (Not trying to derail your thread, Kestra! If you don't want a shift in focus, let me know and I will happily edit this message.)

Oh goodness, derail away! I just like conversation and it's interesting to see where it takes us. :)

I have just thought of another one. For some reason I am always reminded of "The Great Gatsby" when I think of thestrangequark. (It is one of my favorite books.) But I don't think of her as a specific character from the novel. Daisy is a pampered cow, Jordan is shady and Myrtle is common. tsq is none of those things. For me it is the woman's face on the cover that makes me think of her. I always imagined the face was of some mysterious guest at one of Gatsby's parties. She could be seen floating through the room, enchanting everyone she met with her cupid bow smile and twinkling laugh. And wherever she went about the house people would follow her in a tide of champagne and sweet cigarettes, all basking in her presence. Then the next morning the other guests would awake in a haze not able to remember her name or where she came from but were delightfully haunted by her gorgeous face and bewitching personality. That is who I see tsq as... beautiful, enchanting but with a name that I can never remember. :rommie:
Wow! You just made my day. I don't know what to say...I am so flattered! If only I were so ethereal in real life!

But if you can't remember my name I'm not telling you! :p

Well, actually I think it has less to do with subconscious associations and more with the fact that he obsesses about bespoken suits and silk ties and has frequently posted pictures of himself with the finest clothes I have ever seen on a human being. :D

For the latter, absolutely. I have a very visual memory, and in fact I hate when people change avatar frequently because it slows my recognition process. I understand that for many it's just a matter of whims or artistic expression, but for me it's kinda annoying.

As for my opinion of the posters, it's more a matter of cognitive dissonance, as in people that have a cool or pretty avatar but are actually assholes in their posts.

I hadn't thought of it, but I can picture the cover in my mind and AstroSmurf is dead on. It's the birthmark and the style of dress.

Since he looks exactly like Michael Shanks, AstroSmurf reminds me of Daniel Jackson.

RJDiogenes? The dad from American Pie. :D

That's a good question.

I do think I read what is written in the context of the avatar. Is the person a smart-ass? An artiste? Is that avatar how they see themselves? Or how they wish they were?

Especially the overtly political avatars. I think that colors my perception of that person and what they write quite a bit.

I know a person's avatar colors how I read their posts if that avatar is political or a specific character from a show I recognize.

I read people's posts in the voice of the character they have as their avatar almost always. In fact, I read my own posts in the voice of Janeway.
