IGN Interview with Roberto Orci

Very good interview. But weren't they supposed to have delivered the script last Christmas?

I also do like the fact that they are listening to the fans.

Interesting thanks for posting the link...I still think they're targeting March/April 2011 for start of production, that would give them time to cast additional characters/villain/s as well as write a couple of subsequent drafts. Remember the writers strike affected the first film as they had to wait until that was resolved before they could start shooting. I'm glad they're listening to the fans as well.

Which fans? Since the fans agree on nothing, I think it will be the same fans they listened to on the first one.

I like the "jump right into it" quote. Not sure about "just as confusing for some". Does that mean Kirk won't turn to the camera and say "Okay everybody, just so we're clear, this is still an alternate universe, and that's why everything doesn't match up to the way it used to be."

Because that would be funny.

I doubt they're looking at collective opinions since, as you said, they're hard/impossible to find.

They're probably looking at whatever is mentioned on TrekMovie.com and seeing if there's any merit to whatever individuals have to say. Someone could say something and they might think, "Hey, maybe that's worth looking into."

Or it's good PR. Take your pick. But I doubt they're looking for some sort of universal opinion among fans.

I imagine they've made a short list of poster names - at Trekmovie and here and elsewhere - that they can just save time by skipping.

I am sure they listen to as much fan feedback as they can from fans and will take from them ideas and perspectives that will resonate with them.

I wouldn't mind if in the next movie they settled the debate to whether or not the recent movie was a total reboot or an alternate universe was created.

They don't have to do that, because they said explicitly in the first movie exactly what it is: an alternate timeline/universe (either word means the same thing in this context).

Yeah, there is no debate. Although the people who didn't like the answer they got undoubtedly wish it was still open to debate.

I have to respectfully disagree, and I really don't want to open that can of worms, but from my many viewings it plays more like a movie that is erasing previous Trek.

Except that it doesn't. It establishes that Old Spock and Nero come from the future an that this timeline is an altered reality.
The TOS universe isn't being erased.

Honestly, I wouldn't waste time on that. I think it's a "debate" that maybe six people care about. And it's academic anyway. We're never going to see the Prime Universe again so why does it matter?

As I've said before, it's like arguing about how many Klingons can dance on the head of the pin. It's the kind of brain-twisty abstraction that can be fun to argue about at three o'clock in the morning at a STAR TREk convention, but it has no practical meaning, story-wise. And it's certainly not something that most moviegoers are fretting about.

At the risk of sounding like Seven of Nine, whether the old universe still exists or not is irrelevant.

Actually, the universe that exists now should be the prime universe and the one with TOS, TNG, etc should be that alternate.

Well, mathematically, when you put a prime ' on a variable, that indicates a change. So in a mathematical sense, the prime(d) universe... is the new one... yikes, temporal mechanics always gives me a headache. Stick with Quantum mechanics instead! Of course, if it's primed, it's time to light this puppy up.

Orci is very very good at hearing, there's no doubt about that. Sometimes I wonder about the listening though, because it's a lot of dissonance with what "the fans" want. I'm not sure anyone Khan compute all the possibilities!

Well, you have opened that "can of worms" and you're the only one in the topic who has. So...

It may "play" that way in your opinion, but the movie is explicit about what happens - they explain it straight out. Therefore, for purposes of canon and continuity it's a settled issue and they can move forward without further justification - in fact, further elaboration would simply confuse the issue for new (and a lot of returning) viewers.

Instead of furthering the argument (there have been many threads on that topic) I will agree with you that they can move forward without elaborating or justifying or even mentioning the other Trek universe and I would be happy with that.

They don't need to. This last film established that this is their own thing and they will continue to build on that.
