16-year old solo round-the-world Abby Sunderland lost at sea

^Who gives a rat-fuck?

This is an exercise in pure narcissism. "Hey! Look at what I did!"

The global economy in the tank, millions out of work, Congress letting UE benefits expire because of political bullshit and everyone's making a big deal worrying about some bored little rich girl who got in trouble playing with one of Daddy's boats...it's disgusting.

Her parents have done their kids no favors indulging them in this bullshit.

*edit* I just did a quick check on-line, and a boat in the same size range as hers goes from anywhere from $50,000-$150,000 depending on type, fittings, etc USED.

I could live for 3 YEARS on $50,000...and this bimbo's parents wasted that kind of money on a fucking boat...

You are being very derogatory toward a person who affects you negatively in no way, and being decidedly reductionist toward not only her and the relationship between her parents, but also her skills and her experiences of which you have no real knowledge. So, in answer to your question, it seems you do care about this a great deal. As most care about Abby's safety, your posts seem to be focusing on a money aspect that doesn't concern you.

Well excuse me for thinking this conversation was about anything other than you being pissy that there are some people on this planet that aren't being hurt by the economy as bad as other people.

This isn't just about her getting "bored" and deciding to go sailing just for something to do. Sailing is a hobby just like any other. It's not "bullshit". Learning to sail really is no different than learning to ride a horse. Some people enjoy sailing. If she wants to spend her time sailing, that's no different than someone else spending their time playing video games, or joining a sports team, or horseback riding. So she took it a step further and decided to not just sail, but to do something that hasn't been done before. That's actually a cool thing to do. Who wouldn't want to be able to take something they're good at and do something new with it? It's a perfectly reasonable thing to do too, there is nothing narcissistic about it.

As for how much it costs, it's not money wasted if they're getting use out of it and it's something they enjoy. You might not want to spend YOUR money on a boat, but then not everyone likes the same things. My step brother loves cars and wants to eventually buy some ridiculously expensive sports car. I'm not as into cars as he is. As long as it's reliable, will get me from one place to another, and looks decent then I'm fine with it. I wouldn't spend as much on a car as he would. That doesn't make him buying an expensive one a waste. So someone has more money than you, and can afford something really expensive. Get the fuck over it.

:wtf::wtf:

Seriously?

What gives you the right to pass judgment on how other people spend their time or their money?

Not to mention, said spending is the only way the economy will eventually recover. That money isn't gone, it's just moved on to someone else's pocket. Money moving around is a good thing, it's what drives the economy.

One can only hope she's found alive, but there is alot against her.

Yes the parents should have not let her do this at 16..

If they hadn't spent it on the boat, it would not have gone to you.

You're whining about the economy being in the tank and then complaining when people spend money on luxury items, which benefits the economy? You're right, no one should spend money on anything except basic survival needs until the economy recovers, which it never would if people were only spending money on basic survival needs. And thus the Darkwing circular logic train endlessly continues along its path.

Regardless of whether you think this venture was reckless or not, where do you get off calling her a "bimbo"? And worrying about the girl's welfare, no matter the cause of her troubles, is called having compassion. You should look into it.

Anyway, I'm glad to hear she's okay.

Not if you moved out of the basement of your parents single-wide trailer and had to pay for things yourself.

I've spent more than $15k on SCUBA gear to swim into caves because I enjoy it. The shop I bought the gear from enjoyed getting the money too so they could pay employees, vendors, etc..

And you know something Darkwing, no one cares if you think it is a waste of money.

Go troll somewhere else.

That would make out to about $16.6K a year, You would be struggling big time in most cities in the US. 30K a year isn't much here in the DC area. That's why my fiancee isn't going to get an apartment until we get married after graduation so I'd be working, so there would be dual income....

You know what your 16-year-old sister is like.

I've taught 16 year olds, some are extremely immature, but there are some who are more mature, well-spoken and intelligent than many so-called professional adults.
Exactly. Young people mature at vastly different rates. I've had online discussions of political and social issues with posters who were quite thoughtful and reasoned in their arguments. And then I discovered I'd been debating with a 16-year-old high school kid.

And God knows there are plenty of 40-year-olds who act like 12-year-olds when they get online.
. . . Last summer during a race, one of the captains fell overboard, had a heart attack and died immediately. They stopped the race, scooped him up and then the rest of the boats continued racing! I kid you not! Like i say, experienced sailors have a mindset all their own.
Reminds me of the stuntman's credo: If something goes wrong and it looks like you're going to die, at least get the shot! If you don't get the shot, then you died for nothing.

Do you have any idea what months of salt spray can do to a person's lips? Her skills with lip gloss make her more prepared for such an undertaking.

That said, she lost her boat and I hope her father convenes a court martial, which is standard whenever a captain loses a ship.

I care about her safety as a human being, but that's ALL I care about here.

It's sickening to see kids like this with too much money and too little sense. It's the worst kind of narcissistic conspicuous consumption. In our world of finite resources where unemployed people are being cut off from benefits, spending $200,000 (or whatever the cost was) on finding a kid who should NOT have been out there in the first place is an insult AND an injury to people who really NEED those resources.

Abby, you'll spend the next two weeks in your room and no going out on Saturday nights. No Twittering, either!

Awww, dad!

I kid, I kid. But seriously, to dismiss all teenagers as unskilled is ridiculous.

Why? Being young, almost by definition, means being under skilled. Really, at the age of sixteen this girl had enough skill to sail around the world completely by herself (i.e. with no support chase craft)? Really?! And she went when she was told and warned this time of year has stronger weather and most adults who try this fail or struggle and they do it with a support chase craft.

The girl certainly should be admired for taking on such a challenge, for sure, but she stacked the risks up far too much. Having a support craft follow her wouldn't have harmed the "solo" part and once she missed the ideal deadline to leave she should've abandoned the trip and held-off until a safer time of year. And, I'm sorry, I've really got to question her parents for just letting their teenaged daughter to go off to sail around the world for, what, the better part of a year? Sorry, doesn't wash with me. No teenager is skilled enough for such a challenge. Hell, when I was sixteen my parents wouldn't let me go on the friggin' interstate by myself. And this girl's parents just let her sail off around the world. You know, because there aren't like storms, pirates, and other dangers for her to run into along the way. Oh, she had a standard emergency beacon all boats must carry and a satellite phone. She was so prepared to go!

Right.

As one of the millions of hard-working people who was barely getting by BEFORE I lost my job and now am looking to lose my apartment at the end of the month thanks to Congressional BS, I have EVERY right to despise the excessive, immoral conspicuous consumption of this rich little girl and her rich family. Give me just the cost of her boat and I'll live for YEARS on it.

This "hobby" is just a private person's version of spending money on "the arts" or NASA by the government. It's wasteful and immoral and shouldn't be allowed.

EEEENNNHHHH! Wrong, but thanks for playing!

I already live on my own, and I lived for years on ~$1,100/month take home.

The hungry, homeless person you walked or drove by on your way to the SCUBA store thanks you for your concern.
