One more thing: The Enterprise intro music is horrible beyond belief. The music in the show itself, hower, is nothing like it at all.

You also might want to try out Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis, which are very similar to Star Trek and lots of fun.

Might I suggest, to keep things simple, ask yourself what questions were you left with after Trek 2009 and go from there. For example, if you want to know what was old Spock doing before that movie, watch the TNG episodes that featured Leonard Nimoy. That will lead you back into the 'prime' timeline and then you can go back from there.

Tell us what you want to 'know' and we can certainly tell you what episodes and Movies to get, to answer your questions, and lead you through the 'big' moments in Trek history.

So I'm brand new to the realm of Star Trek, I just recently watched the Star Trek (2009) a couple weeks ago and I loved it. I wanted to know what was the best way to get into the Movies/Series, and what I should start with.

Since you've watched Star Trek 2009, you'd probably be most interested in watching the original series, because it features the same characters (and you'll find it interesting to see differences as well as similarities between the original and the 'alternate universe' versions of characters). Also, TOS season 1 has a lot of great episodes, with an occasional clunker, while season 2 is weaker, and season 3 is much weaker, so starting with season 1 of TOS seems like a good idea. (It's the opposite with most other Trek shows - TNG, DS9 and ENT all had weaker starts and needed a couple of seasons to get consistently good. VOY starts so-so, peaks in the middle seasons, and has very weak last 2 seasons.) However, if you have a problem with outdated 1960s effect, sets and makeup, maybe you should get remastered versions of TOS episodes. It doesn't matter in which order you watch TOS episodes, since the show wasn't serialized at all. You don't even need to watch all the episodes, and you could ask people here to give you lists of good episodes to watch. There are quite a few bad ones you could skip, unless you find out that you like the show so much you want to see them all.

The movies were made much later and they have better effects and makeup (except for Star Trek V - my advice is to avoid that one, it's awful in every way). Opinions on the first movie (Star Trek: The Motion Picture) are very divided, and it is certainly a bit too slow, but you need to see it IMO at least for Spock's character development. The second one - The Wrath of Khan - was very successful and is regarded by many as the best Trek movie. I'd recommend seeing all the movies with the TOS cast, except for Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, but keep in mind that Star Trek: The Motion Picture is not representative of the rest of the movies. (TOS cast members pop up in a few episodes of other series.)

With the other shows, as I said, the problem is that they tend to start slow. TNG had an especially bad season 1 and almost as bad season 2 (though with an occasional great episode like A Measure of A Man), so you might want a list of episodes from the early seasons you need to see. From season 3 onward it gets really good, it almost feels like a completely different show (though season 7 was weaker).

DS9 is my favorite, but, as noted above, its pilot refers to some events from TNG (seasons 3-4), so watching it would spoil some of the crucial events from that show. If you are into serialized, character-driven shows like Battlestar Galactica, Lost, etc., you might particularly enjoy it. It is different from the usual Trek format since it doesn't take place on a ship but on a space station. It is not as serialized as the shows I mentioned above, but it's far more serialized than the other Treks, so you can't start watching it in the middle. The problem is that the show doesn't get consistent until about season 4, though there are many great episodes in the first 3 seasons, many crucial developments and great character moments. It gets very frustrating at times in early seasons, since you'll get to see a great episode followed by a weak one. If you like DS9 in early seasons, you'll certainly love seasons 4-7, if you don't like the early seasons, you might still love the late seasons, which feature more action and suspense.

As for ENT, while it's the newest show, it is a prequel to TOS. You need to watch it from the beginning to get to know the characters, but if you dislike seasons 1 and 2, which are rather weak (especially season 2), you might still love seasons 3 and 4. Season 3 is one long storyarc and has good action and effects; while season 4 heavily references TOS, introducing and setting up some things that would happen in it, and while it can be seen without having seen TOS, it better to watch it after TOS. (It also references some things from the other shows, but that would not be such an issue.)

I gotta say this is about as good advice on jumping into Star Trek as you're gonna get.

And as for Old Spock not being TOS Spock... wow, never thought of that. I guess there are an infinite number of "universes", how many to Worf pass through in the TNG episode "Parallels"?

OP, if you liked this movie, I suggest you start with Enterprise, as it was the most simplistic and accessible of the series. Or you could just examine the film versions of the writings of Ted Geisel, though that may be too sophisticated.

When I started watching Star Trek (age 5) I didn't see episodes in order. I think I saw a few early TNG's, Star Trek V and two random TOS episodes. As I grew up I saw more and more, but it took ages for me to find out what happened when Kirk first met Khan, or how the crew ended up happily back in Starfleet (and on the Enterprise again!) after what they did in STIII.

I muddled through and had loads of fun, and it was cool when I was finally able to see a certain episode or film and fill in the blanks.

Enterprise is not the strongest of the Trek series. So I would avoid showing that one to begin with. I know a lot of folks like this series a lot. Heck, I own it on DVD and have enjoyed it as popcorn entertainment, myself. So I sort of know where you guys are coming from. But there are a few problems in recommending a new person in watching Enterprise first. Well for one, there is no character development. Secondly, the acting is bad. Thirdly, they don't explain a few important things within the series. Furthermore, a new viewer is going to spoil it for them self if they start with Enterprise (The Series). There are a lot of pre-references to a new viewer that are not going to mean anything to them when they watch it. And it is not like a 2 hour movie that they can just pop in real quick and re-watch again to gain the knowledge of those references, either.

As for watching First Contact as an introduction into TNG (The Next Generation): I don't think that beginning with First Contact The Film is a problem at all. Sure, there is going to be a lot of things that are not going to be understood by the new viewer. But that's the beauty of it. When they watch the series and then later watch First Contact, they are going to understand what all the fuss was about (in the story line). You don't have to watch TNG chronologically in order to grasp what it is going on. I mean, that was the whole point of the new Star Trek (2009) movie. It was to dazzle new audiences so that they can bring them into the Trek-verse.

So if a new viewer was dazzled with the new Star Trek (2009) film, it is logical to dazzle them again with the best from each of the series. And in my opinion the best of TNG (Next Generation) to grab a new viewer into the series would be the film... First Contact.

If they like it, and want to know why Picard was all bent out of shape over the Borg. They can then watch "Best of Both Worlds Parts l and ll" when they watch TNG Season's 3-7.

regardless, I've decided that I'm going to watch all of it at some point. I'm afraid that if I don't watch all of it I'll just confuse myself and end up frustrated that I don't understand certain things.

so this is what my course of action is looking like:

- TOS remastered (already bought it off amazon, I figured it's best to start at the beginning.)
- TNG
- DS9
- Voyager
- Enterprise
- All of the movies (except V, I was told that it's pointless and poorly made.)
- TAS

Couple of things...

I'd recommend that you watch the TOS era movies before you tackle TNG.

You've done good by buying TOS remastered but you might want to consider maybe Netflixing some of this stuff. Voyager and Enterprise did have some pretty good episodes, but that also had some real stinkers. Same with the first couple seasons of TNG. Plus... you're talking a good $1000 to own everything... But that's just my opinion, and I'm sure someone will refute it...

You wont miss anything by skipping V if that's what you want to do, but maybe it when it's all said and done you should pop it in just to see how bad it is! Seriously, though, it was pretty bad, ironically it does have some pretty good character moments, especially between Kirk, Spock, and McCoy.

That's good but I concur; split up the movies by watching all the original cast movies before TNG.

The Netflix advice from Ralphis is very good as well.

As for watching TOS, it doesn't really make a lot of difference but I would suggest finding a list with the production order to watch the episodes. It's interesting to watch the evolution of the set, costumes, music and effects as the series got going.

A solid start, that's for sure. As long as a people are throwing out random advice, here's what I recommend:

1) TOS seasons 1-3 (remastered)
2) TAS (feel free to be picky -- there's only 4-5 that are any good)
3) TOS movies (include 5, it's not that bad)
4) TNG seasons 1-5
5) DS9 season 1/TNG season 6
6) DS9 season 2/TNG season 7
7) DS9 season 3/VOY season 1 (watch Generations around here)
8) DS9 season 4/VOY season 2
9) DS9 season 5/VOY season 3 (watch First Contact around here)
10) DS9 season 6/VOY season 4
11) DS9 season 7/VOY season 5 (watch Insurrection around here)
12) VOY 6-7
13) Nemesis
14) Enterprise seasons 1-4
15) Star Trek 11

That being said, it's perfectly okay to watch just the series on their own and not paired up as I have them in steps 5-11.

You are a breath of fresh air.

Many in the 'fan world' of STAR TREK didn't like the new movie because, among other reasons, it rebooted the concept, or, and you will find this interesting, they thought it was Star Trek for the masses. Meaning, it was dumbed down for this new generation. You will find many on this site who just can't stand the new movie. Oh well...you can't please everyone.

Others, more enlightened IMO, thought it would bring in a new generation of fans, such as yourself; and here you are.

As for what shows to watch? First off, be warned; there are 600+ hours of TV episodes. Buying them all could put you back several hundred dollars. And even some of TREK's biggest icons, Shatner among them, would suggest that a third of it is great...a third of it isn't and a third of it is somewhere between.

I would suggest watching these ten examples...

1.TOS--Amok Time
2.TOS--The Doomsday Machine
3.TOS--Mirror Mirror

4.TNG--Yesterday's Enterprise
5.TNG--The Offspring
6.Best of Both worlds (1 and2)

7. DS9--Emissary

Movie..Wrath of Khan
Movie--Voyage Home

I think if you watch those, and you like them, I think you can branch off from there. You're going to find that most TREK fans, IMO, do not like ALL of Star Trek. You'll end up clustering around the aspects of the show you like, and that is the fun part of exploring TREK.

Wow, OP, your head must be spinning from all this advice. It's not so bad though.

Chronological order isn't all that important unless you're really picky about that sort of thing. I started by watching TOS (in syndication) and TNG (while it was airing) at the same time. Got to see all the movies from Generations onward in the theater.

The biggest think is just to take it at your own pace. There is so much to watch now a days that you can burn yourself out if you aren't careful. If the episode doesn't grab your attention, move on to another one and don't expect every episode to be great.

And, most importantly, have fun.

Oh, and I agree entirely with Scorpio's list, and would personally add The Undiscovered Country (movie) to it. I loved that one personally.

Another way to go would be to watch the pilot episodes (in TOS there are two) of each series, then follow whichever one grabs your interest.

Don't do it! Becoming a Star Trek fan leads to a lonely existence of arguing with other nerds on the internet. Take the advice of one who was too young to heed the warnings and get out while you still can!

But if you insist...

also it's nice to see someone comparing it to Lost, being such a fan of that show. It makes me a lot more excited to start watching!

Just to clarify, most of Trek is episodic fare and is not at all like Lost, most of Trek goes like this:

1) The ship visits some planet or space anomaly.
2) A crisis occurs.
3) The crisis is resolved, often through the use of made-up technical jargon.
4) The ship flies away never to return.

That's not to say that it's bad, if I thought that then I wouldn't be on this board, but you shouldn't be expecting epic storylines from all of the shows.

The main exception to this rule is Deep Space Nine, a show that set out to be different from the others by being set on a space station. In the early seasons they didn't mess with the format too much, but by season 3 the writers decided to do something different and they started developing storylines. By the final seasons the show had grown into an epic series about various factions vying for control of the galaxy. If you liked Lost then you stand a good chance of liking DS9 as well, I was a big fan of both shows.

Another exception to this is the latter seasons of Enterprise, particularly season 3. That year they broke with their usual format and did a year-long story about trying to destroy a weapon that is being built to destroy Earth. Many people find that concept silly, many others think they pulled it off reasonably well, I happen to be one of the latter. The final season of Enterprise started to lay the groundwork for a conflict with the Romulans, but the show was cancelled before they had a chance to tell that story.

I'm intrigued by your attitude, but also quite confused. Did you really find the new movie so good that you are determined to watch 600+ hours of this franchise? Seriously, if I had known when I started watching TNG that there was going to be this much of it I wouldn't have bothered.

Good plan. It's not vital to start with TOS, it was actually the last of the Trek shows I watched, but if I had the opportunity to start at the beginning then I would have. Just remember that the show was made in the 60s and it has a different style to the latter shows. The characters are slightly different from the versions in the new movie, and if you have taste you'll come to agree that these are the superior versions.

Awesome. Hope you will be able to look past the cheesy sets and visualize them being similar to the set you seen in the 2009 Star Trek film. I know that if you do, you will really end up loving the Original Series.

If you end up falling asleep in any of the episodes on the first disc in Season 1. I would just jump ahead to TNG Season 3 disc 1 then. You can always go back and watch the first two seasons after you grown attached enough to the characters to make the sacrifice.

- DS9

Again, if you end up finding yourself waking up in a pool of your own drool over watching the first disc of Season 1: I would skip ahead to DS9 Season 3 disc 7 (episode titled "Adversary"). This is where the lead character called Sisko becomes a Captain and also it is when the Dominion War starts to heat up and get really good, too. Also, after getting the best of DS9, you can always go back and watch the first three full seasons as a prequel event.

- Voyager

The pilot episode is a must watch because it sets the story in motion for the entire series. However, if you find the other episodes are really plain and dull and hard to get thru: Then I would skip ahead to VOY Season 3 disc 7 (episode titled "Scorpion Part l"). Oh, and again, you can always go back and watch the first three full seasons after getting hooked to the best of the series.

- Enterprise

I am glad you have decided on watching this series last. You will definitely understand why after you watch it.

- All of the movies

I would watch the Original Series films (Movies 1-6) after the Original Series (Remastered) if you have already made a commitment in viewing the Original Series.

As for the TNG (Next Generation) films: I would watch...

1. Generations (after Deep Space Nine Season 3)
2. First Contact (after Deep Space Nine Season 5)
3. Insurrection (after Deep Space Nine Season 6)
4. Nemesis (after you watch all of Voyager)
5. New Star Trek (2009) film (after the TNG films and after you read the Countdown comic books).

(except V, I was told that it's pointless and poorly made.)

Yeah, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is pretty bad. However, I think you should see it just because there are some scenes in it that are fun to witness. I mean, we have all sat thru bad movies before, and even in some bad movies there are certain things in it that make it worthwhile in seeing it.

- TAS

This one will be a true test of your commitment to Star Trek.
If you can get thru a 1970s cartoon show, then you are indeed on your way to true Trek enlightenment.

Enterprise can be placed before TOS and the episode titled "These Are Voyages..." can be placed after the TNG episode titled "Pegasus". However, it is recommended that you watch Enterprise as a separate alternate time line after you watch the core time line (if at all).

Important Note 2:

~Of course TAS (The Animated series) can be skipped over if it is hard to get into it. Also, the Animated episodes are listed by stardate and not by airdate. So you will have to watch it according to this list and not the way that it presented within the DVD Complete Set. Furthermore, if you want to watch this series with the others (chronologically), it should be watched immediately after TOS (The Original Series).

Important Note 3:

* In addition, I recommend watching the Remastered Version of the original unaired pilot episode titled "The Cage" instead of the extended version. The extended episode of "The Cage" has black and white shots (or footage) mixed with color shots. it is a bit uneven or unnatural to watch the episode that way for the first time. Also, one will have to rent or buy the 3rd Season of the Remastered TOS in order to view "The Cage" first, too (Original Series Season 3 Disc 7).
