NHL Discussion - 2009-2010 Season

I'm really starting to hate getting Ovechkin and Crosby jammed down my throat. This is the Pens second winter classic. I know they're trying to market those two players, but they aren't the only two players in the league. It really should have been the Caps and maybe the Rangers at either Yankee Stadium or National's Park or something.

No dog in this round for me, but it is going to be an exciting, fairly evenly matched, fast-paced final which will go to six or seven games, methinks.

Well said, I've been saying it for a while myself.

If the NHL wants to survive in some of these sunbelt markets, why don't they try and market a star in every market. I can't think of any league that only markets two stars.

Magic vs. Bird and Palmer vs. Nicklaus immediately come to mind. In both cases, the rivalry was used as a stepping stone to build national television prominence for their sports. And it WORKED.

Hockey doesn't have a fan base in the southern states, where the teams are just dreadful. I doubt people in Atlanta or Carolina are going to give a damn about hockey when their teams are still garbage. Doesn't matter if Crosby and Ovechkin are all over the place.

This series has been fantastic, but it's also like having a heart attack every 5 minutes if you care about the outcome (which I do).

I only got to one game this year and it was probably the worst Flyers game of the season. Flyers were listless, had dropped 14 of 17, and fired Stevens a couple games ago. Laviolette wasn't doing much better. I remember Boucher was hurt and this guy named Leighton was brought in, there were a few fights, and at one point the fans let the Flyers have it and booed the team - which, believe it or not, is pretty rare for Flyers fans. They were bad. So I can't quite believe that this same team is in the Stanley Cup Finals. It's awesome. I had zero expectations going into the playoffs and yet here they are.

Who is this Ville Leino guy on Philly? He was the best player on the ice last night I thought, by far. Just looked up his stats, 15 pts in 16 games.

Got him from Detroit earlier this year...took him a while to crack the lineup. And yeah, he's been awesome this postseason.

It's hilarious watching Blackhawks fans start whining about officiating now. If you get to keep a goal scored by Byfuglien pushing a goaltender into the net while he's covering the puck, you have the inexorable right to shut your piehole for the rest of the season vis-a-vis bad calls. The Hawks got away with murder for three rounds - now they're up against a team that knows how to get away with stuff, and when to patient. Suddenly the NHL's last remaining Chosen Teams looks befuddled that everything isn't going their way.

I've hated Philly for years, and expected to root for Chicago - but damn if the Flyers aren't the better team in every way right now. And seeing the smirk exiled from Kane's over-rated face would be a thing of beauty. (Not to mention, as above, the possibility of a Hossa Three-peat of Fail.)

It is very satisfying as a Flyers fan to see how nervous those who thought this would be a relatively easy series for Chicago suddenly have become.

I found this video yesterday while nervously awaiting the game. Lappy's teeth were knocked out and the new ones hadn't yet arrived when he filmed this awesome commercial. :bolian:

That's awesome. :D

Having watched Lappy for years with the Avalanche, I was sad when he left, but am happy for the success he's having. He's one of those guys that you always want on your team.

I could watch this for hours and not get bored.

Scott Arniel, who coached the Manitoba Moose for the past four seasons, will be coaching Columbus next season. Congrats and good luck! :)
