Latest GoldenEye 64 Rumors

I just read this over at CommanderBond.net.

Apparently, Eurocom is planning to "remake" the game in terms of graphics for the current generation format. Personally, I can see this happening and that is probably a smart movie. The strange thing is that it seems that they are going to use the likeness of Daniel Craig instead of Pierce Bronsen.

Now, while I can see the logic behind this (use the current Bond, yada, yada), it seems like it would be surreal to have the Craig Bond in a Bronsen adventure.

Anyway, this is all rumor at this point, so it might turn out not to be fully true (if at all) anyway.

That would be utterly amazing. Hope it comes to pass.

I'm shocked that the cartridge didn't melt with how much I played that game with my brother. It's still one of my favorites.

I really don't see the point of putting Craig in the game, and I don't really care. It's an FPS, so it doesn't really matter. I would prefer to keep things close to the original, but some inspiration is good too.

I can't wait for the online multiplayer, it will be '98 all over again

Probably because Activision has the license to produce James Bond games with Daniel Craig's likeness, whereas it holds no such rights to Pierce Brosnan's face at this time?

Oh, I never considered that. Yeah, I bet that has a lot to do with it too.

It would be neat if they can actually include skins of the different Bonds this time around to play in multiplayer.

The only rationale is a copyright one. The movie involved Pierce Brosnan, that should be the face in the game (although I wouldn't mind Craig as an extra, especially for multiplayer).

I'd support this if they don't change anything besides the graphics. The game is too good to mess around with.

One caveat, though. Doesn't Rare still own the rights to the game?

It's still fun to play. Which parts bugged you? The only thing that really annoyed me is the lack of precision with aiming using the R shoulder button and using the C buttons to zig zag. But the play control is part of its charm. If they wanted to change that, they might as well just make a new game.

Are there problems with the levels or multiplayer themselves?

The best solution is to do what they did with the excellent Perfect Dark remake for Xbox Live. Add online multiplayer as well as bringing the controls up to modern standards. In the case of Perfect Dark they had multiple control schemes. One based on the original game, one based on Halo and one based on Call of Duty

You really think so? I still enjoy it. It's old, but that doesn't stop it from being a hell of a lot of fun.

If these rumors turn out to be true, it seems like it will keep everything from the previous game, just updated. I wouldn't be surprised if they add extra stuff to the package (skins, maps, weapons, mostly stuff for multiplayer).

The original was going to have all the past Bonds, but Rare couldn't secure the rights. The same would likely apply today, as well.

Well, I'm guessing getting the rights to Bronsan and Craig wouldn't be that difficult. Connery might be reasonable considering is positive experience with From Russia With Love. Moore, Dalton, and Lazenby...that I don't know.

Who knows. While this news might turn out to be false, there does seem to be some movement of a GoldenEye 64 re-release of some kind. Apparently, Rare doesn't need to be involved.

Nintendo owns the rights to the game, as Rare at the time had a second-party publishing agreement with Nintendo: While Nintendo didn't own the company outright (it held 49 percent), it owned the publishing rights to the games which were developed. The only exceptions were Rare's original trademarks, like Banjo of Banjo-Kazooie.

With GoldenEye, it's a licensing mess: Nintendo owns the rights to the game, Rare developed the game and owns the code, and Activision owns the Bond rights. This is what de-railed the GoldenEye re-release (which was to have the original graphics and gameplay, merely with online play) on Xbox Live Arcade, developed by Rare -- Activision was fine with the idea, provided that a substantial up-front rights fee was paid, but while Microsoft gave Nintendo the option to release the port on the Virtual Console a few months after the XBLA release (in addition to a rights payment), Nintendo put the kibosh on it.

This sounds like it'd be entirely different, as Activision is producing it (ostensibly with a license from Nintendo, as it's Wii-exclusive), while Eurocom is remaking the game from the ground-up, which wouldn't create any issues with Rare (and Microsoft is entirely out of the picture).
