How is there no Red Dead Redemption thread here???

Well in my case it's probably because generally I don't give two shits about the story to a video game. Uncharted 2 was the notable execption because that story drew me in. And while I enjoy some of the extra storyline and some of the chatting, usually it just goes on a bit too long for me. Listening to that lunatic Seth rant while driving his wagon to the mission was pretty annoying.

EDIT TO ADD: Part of my displeasure probably has a little to do with some of the voice acting. In particular, the person voicing Bonnie McFarlane I found to be particularly grating and couldn't wait for her to shut up.

I'm not normally someone big on story in games, though there's some exceptions like Uncharted. The conversations during travel have been good for character/world building, so far. The more I see of Bonnie and Marston, the more I like them.

I played it for a few hours last night. It's a lot of fun so far, even in stuff that would sound terribly boring if you were to describe it to me, like herding. The game looks fantastic, too. I'm hoping there's not a mission I get completely stuck on like has happened in most of the GTA games.

100% completed the SP over the long weekend.
Phenomenal game.

On to the MP. ;)

Prepare to be underwhelmed. I achieved 100% in single player without meaning to, I was so immersed in the game that I kept doing the side missions and unlocking costumes, so by the time I had finished the story I was on 95%. After that it only took me a few more hours to finish the rest off.

After I was done I went online for the first time and was surprised with how poor it is. There's not much to do in free-roam beyond the 7 gang hideouts and the challenges that are almost the same as those in the single player game. You can certainly have fun experiences, I had great fun taking on three guys that were holed up in El Presidio and shooting at me with cannons, but that sort of random encounter has been rare for me, most of the time I come across assholes that like to player kill for no reason. As for the competitive modes, they're very basic, there's free-for-all, gang matches and capture-the-flag games. Worst of all, there's no lasso! :(

The single-player is so good that it makes the multiplayer seem even more basic than it is. I'd like to think that the free co-op DLC will make it more fun, but I fear that it will only be glorified gang hideouts that you can't play in free-roam.

You're right. The single player is excellent. Which is why I hope we get Lost & Damned/Ballad of Gay Tony style DLC.

This is going to sound like a stupid question coming from someone who's played this game for several hours, but can someone explain the mechanics of how you're supposed to do the duels? I have no clue really what I'm doing but I won the first several without any problem. Now I'm getting to harder gunfighters and this one guy has killed me twice and it doesn't seem to work at all the way it did in previous gunfights.

So the bottom line, I just need to know what "buttons to mash" to actually properly do a duel. Thanks!

Hold down the left trigger and keep firing until you're out of shots. Before the time runs out (or you're out of bullets) you have to get your kill meter (blue on the bottom right of the screen) higher than his kill meter (red). The best way to do this is to aim for his neck and head because that region is more valuable, two or three shots there and you'll more than likely win.

Alternatively, you can aim for his gun to disarm him and end the dual without killing him.

But what actually starts the process? I mean what button do your push to get the two bars (red and blue). I've seen comments about seeing "DRAW!" on the screen and I swear I've never seen that, it seems like it just goes from the cutscene to the two bars and previously I just aimed and fired and it worked. When I came up against this guy last night, it didn't all of a sudden.

To draw you just have to hold the left trigger as normal. You can draw immediately, thereby giving yourself more time to shoot but your adversary is zoomed out and harder to hit, or you can wait until it's zoomed all the way in and at that point you'll get the notice to "DRAW!" If his bar is higher than yours by the end of the time-limit then you wont shoot, he'll just hit you once and the game will announce that you're dead. If "DRAW!" never appears after waiting then there must be some sort of bug.

So what mechanic (button, procedure, whatever) makes your bar higher than his? How do I make it higher I guess is what I'm asking?

On the "easy" gunfights it never really was a contest, I would hold L2, use the right stick to aim the red cross on the guys body and it just kind of did it. That's why I never could really understand WTF was going on (in terms of button mashing I mean).

You have to spread out your shots so they're not in the same area, and you have to target high-value areas such as the head, chest and stomach.

I had a similar problem, one of the stranger missions led me to a duel with a guy in a graveyard and he must have killed me 6 or 7 times before I finally managed to take him down.

Aiming at certain body parts such as the top of the head, or the gun causes your reticule to turn white, which fills around 75% of your bar instantly.

Press left 2 to draw your gun when the screen drains of color. Move the targeting circle with the right joy stick. Press R1 to "paint" where you want your shots to go. When the time runs out you automatically fire. If you target his gun hand even once, you shoot the gun out of his hand and you get massive amounts of honor. Hope that helps.

If the griefing is widespread now (and, granted, it can get pretty hilarious; one day, we came across a group of guys trying to do the minecart mission, and we kept killing them and pushing the minecart back to the beginning), imagine how bad it would be if some goon could lasso you, hogtie you up and leave you to die?
