I imagine he'll be General Phillips (or an equivalent character), the guy who recruited Rogers for the supersoldier program.

i read that Tommy Lee Jones will play General Phillips

Just catching up with news, busy at work this week, and saw the clip where Hayley Atwell mentions Tommy Lee Jones.
Not sure how one comes to the conclusion he has to play General Phillips but SHH posted that same assumption. They must have a source for the 'rumors' they mention but don't give one.

As rumored, Tommy Lee Jones will act in Captain America: The First Avenger in a still-unknown role. Hayley Atwell, who plays Peggy Carter in the Joe Johnston-directed comic book adaptation, confirmed the news to LeicesterSquareTV. You can watch their interview with Atwell using the player below. They start talking about "Captain America" around the 2:20 mark.

Rumors place the "Men in Black" star in the part of General Chester Phillips, the military officer who chooses Steve Rogers for the super soldier program and who aided in his training soon after the serum took effect.

Phillips was retconned into continuity in "Tales of Suspense #63" in 1965, just two years after Captain America was brought to Marvel's forefront as the leader of the Avengers. Phillips remained a character in the Marvel universe until 2003 when he (now retired) was killed by assassins from the underwater rival-to-Atlantis continent Lemuria.

What other part might TLJ be a good fit for if not the General? At any rate even if its a bit part like Phillips Marvel continues to attract quality talent to its projects.

Phillips is the sort of part he's in the age range to play, and presumably the film is going to give Cap a superior to report to, so it makes sense they'd use him.

Seems some eyes have spied possible Captain America costumes and have described what was seen.

Mike Sampson over at JoBlo has caught a glimpse of the "Captain America" costume ... The second is the redesigned battle-ready version that serves as the primary costume for the film which is the one Mike saw.
First up there's no hood or wings on his head, rather a "more traditional M1 Army helmet though this helmet does come over the eyes to give Cap a traditional "domino mask" look. Still present is the white "A" in the middle of the hat... the blue of the helmet is much more muted than the blue in the comic costume. A thick black strap comes down over the ears and connects under the chin."
The chest isn't spandex but "more of a leather fabric, like something you'd see on one of the 'X-Men'". Design wise a less prominent white star is there, while "the costume is still split horizontally through the middle with blue on top and red and white stripes on the bottom. But instead of stripes, it's actually just a white base with two red utility straps acting as stripes. These straps affix to a metal loop at the midpoint of the chest and a black strap extends up to the shoulders from that point. His shoulders have pads over them that extend down to about mid-bicep and are attached via a brown strap under the arm. The sleeves are white with a fairly standard brown glove."
The bottom half is blue pants, brown utility boots and an "old school utility belt... made up of brown pockets with a silver buckle." The shield hews closely to the classic design of red/white/red rings with the white star in a blue circle at the middle.

He of course could have seen preliminary designs and without seeing them myself think its early to judge. It took 5months before we saw Thor. Months into it before we saw leaked onset photos of Iron Man back in '08. I find it odd that Cap's outfit is there to be viewed even before shooting has begun.

Not bad. Close to what I expected. Not a fan of all the "detailing" on the pants. I guess its better than a tiny star pattern or something.

First reaction was that it would look amazing as an action figure. Second image looks like it could be used for promotional material

What a fantastic recreation of Cap's costume. It is modern while still holding on to it's superhero roots. It might be my favorite movie costume.

I'm glad that they put their trust in the source material and didn't make it just leather with an 'A'.

It looks just fine.

What a fantastic recreation of Cap's costume. It is modern while still holding on to it's superhero roots. It might be my favorite movie costume.

according to Joe Johnson there's 2 costumes, one is closer to the 616 outfit and is worn when Cap's shoved into doing USO tours. this one, i'm guessing is the second one which he wears when he's actually out busting heads and putting toe to butt for Uncle Sam.

I hope that doesn't mean his traditional outfit will be a sort of "jokey" one. I guess we'll see.

I like the stars on the sides; I always thought Cap should have something like that there, though I've always envisioned stars closer to those on the sides of WWII aircraft.
