It looks like I'm hanging up my Star Trek: Online boots

The game has certainly entertained me over the past few months, but I think that was more down to the people I was playing with from here then the game itself. I reached Rear Admiral within the first few weeks of playing and haven't had much to do since. I stuck with the game, decided to support it and pay the monthly subscription even though I've pretty much stopped playing - I was going to come back when season 2 was released, claim my veteran reward and carry on playing the new content.

However, yesterday my subscription didn't come out of my account as I didn't have enough money in (D'oh!), so my STO account was suspended. Fair enough. I planned to use another account and sign back up today (less then 24 hours later), but before doing this I emailed customer support and asked how my veteran reward would be affected, they replied and said they do not know, but it is likely it has reset. :(

So I guess that's it from me, I've been supporting this game since day one, through development to beta play, but due to a payment mix up they fuck me over for the veteran reward. I might be back for season 2, but I doubt it. As I said, I think I was mainly in the game to socialise with people from here, rather then the gameplay itself! :p

Was nice playing with you all, will maybe see you in the game again soon... :bolian:

I'm doing the same, but I'm just letting my sub run out. I reached RA5, zipped around doing missions and blowing up stuff, did a lot of PVP and I think I've had my fill. I may eventually come back, but for now that's it. If and when I do come back, I hope to see you around, Tim. :D

Sorry to hear that. I always enjoyed playing with you.
But I think I noticed this from a lot of people for whatever reasons lately.
Almost always when I log in the fleet roster is totally empty while just a few weeks back you could always count on somebody being there.
I play less myself since Ieveled my second character up to RA5, but i won't go anywhere soon, since I have the 1 year subscription.
The season 2 update that's about to be launched will hopefully induce some new life into our little STO community so the socializing aspect, which is the most imüportant, will become more fun again.

Edit: By the way, I love your new avatar.

I've been pretty AWOL myself lately. Ever since I hit RA5. Just kind of lost interest. Was thinking about letting my subscription expire. It is a fun game, I just don't feel like investing any more time into it.

I enjoyed playing with you as well, and like you, nearly every time I would log in, the list of people online (and they are legion) would be empty. Fortunately, I know my STO stats will stay the same, and I can always come back down the road.

Thank you. :D

Lifer here, also starting to get bored with it... my character Tehibris is on RA5 and doing nothing, I can't even be bothered with the STFs. I have a Tac officer called Richards on Commander 9 ish and I try to get on at least once a week... but RL has taken the fore recently.

Just FYI - it's been confirmed on the official boards that you'll never have your vet reward time reset when an account lapses, it'll just stop counting days until it's reactivated again. in other words, if you have 120 active days, and you discontinue subbing for 6 months, on the day you decide to re-subscribe, you'll have 121 days, and the vet reward 'day count' will continue from there, until you decide not to renew again, etc.

Taking a break from MMOs is a good thing though; and not at all uncommon. You may want to keep checking from time to time as they have said they are raising the Level cap, and adding a high level sector block that isn't Borg or STF related and has more episodic, and repeatable missions. That's another thing with most MMOs - new content and Level cap increases happen as development continues.

I really enjoyed my first month with STO, but other, better games just kept drawing me away from it. It's not that STO was BAD, it was just that it wasn't AS GOOD as other games, and I only have a limited amount of gaming time at my disposal. When i realized I hadn't played in over a month, I ended my sub.

Really? Well I've calmed down then, and I'll be back in game shortly. The vet reward thing is what pissed me off most, as it was an unintentional oversight on my part and I thought i'd lost all my progress lol. Will confirm this then see you all in game shortly if true lol :p

Sure.. tell me when... I'll try to make it happen.

I've attempted it just once yet. Didn't get past the first space part though. It's the first mission that can be failed without giving up.
You have to fight Borg ships against the clock.
When the time runs out the mission is aborted automatically and you can't restart for 15 minutes I was told.

I think it's good to take a break. STO is my first MMO, and I haven't played consistently for about a month. Just got busy, then my sub ran out and it took a week before I took care of it....then another week went by before I did anything about it. In the interim, I picked up a couple of games I wanted to play for the last few years (my computer is fairly new) and when I logged back in the bulk of my fleet had left the fleet (our fleet leader has changed the focus of our fleet, so that's a big part of it...I may be leaving soon as well).

I left town friday and forgot the vid games I'd been playing, so I played some STO....I didn't do shit all day but play this game! Moved up five grades and finally, at about 5am this morning, hit Admiral level. Went to Earthbase and logged out.
I really had fun, and realized that I pretty much just enjoy having a Trek game with really great graphics, awesome classic era outfits and ships and a big wide open universe to fly around in.

Now luckily for me, blowing shit up is still fun. I've enjoyed the story missions and all, but it's still just blowing shit up. And I'm okay with that. While I'd like more content that varies that up and broadens the universe, I still have fun just flying around and blowing the crap out of guys. But I think it's a good thing to take a break from time to time. Familiarity breeds contempt (and boredom) and all that.

So at Admiral level, what aspects lead to "nothing to do" that I've heard so many RA level folks complain about? After several guys in my fleet told me not to be in a hurry to be Admiral level for this reason, I slowed down my march towards moving up. What exactly do you have to do at this level?

Now some random thoughts.....

In the standard MMO, is there some sort of level cap or highest level? With RPG's, you move up and you're just "Level 4" or "Level 85" etc....but by attaching a rank, they definately limit how high you can go. Seriously, what's after Admiral? Grand Admiral? Super Admiral? Lord High Admiral? I realize they wanted the promotion ceremony for ego boost and socialization, but they prolly shoulda just had rank as something only you the player saw and not something "in game".

Shoulda had some additional "ranks" in as well, like chief, ensign, commodore, fleet captain as well.

Also, because of the rank based nature, did people feel compelled to play the crap out of it to move up so fast? Or do other MMO's rank you by a "rank" and not just a number? How normal is this? Was it just getting to the main Trek ships, like Galaxy, Defiant and Voyager that spurred this on?

Also, what could be added in to make the game more interesting or add it's playability? I've heard people talk of mini-games....how common is this in other MMO's? I think another thing I've heard of is captain quarters, where you could have trophies and stuff in there. That'd be cool.

I thought I read where they are introducing diplomacy into the game. Not sure how that will work or what it will entail.

Yes, there is a cap; within each Rank there are 10 Grades, and currently the cap is Rear Admiral 5. Next month's major update, Season 2, will be bumping that cap up to Vice Admiral 1.

There are a few storyline missions within the Rear Admiral tier currently, but most of what you do at that rank is:

PvP
Special Task Forces
Exploration missions to "grind" for better gear to improve your ability in the above.

Special Task Forces, or STFs, are like the "raids" some other MMOs have, although currently they're only five-man teams so players of the most popular MMOs might argue they're not true raids. Cryptic has never maintained them to be true raids, though, and during development called them "raidisodes" since they're a cross between a raid and a really long "Episode" (which are what the storyline missions are called). They require a lot more time and skill than ordinary Episodes, and have commensurately greater rewards. There are currently four of them, and every month or so another comes along.

With the Season 2 update next month, they're going to be adding a lot more content at all levels, and will begin releasing an Episode every week.

If you're not a fan of PvP in other games, you might give it a try in this one; it's a more casual-friendly PvP where you can make a difference even against much more skilled and better-geared opponents by concentrating on the mission objectives and not just the pew pew.

As for what's after Admiral; you're not Admiral, you're Rear Admiral. After the two halves of that (in the US Navy and in Star Trek there is Rear Admiral Lower Half and Rear Admiral Upper Half) comes Vice Admiral, then Admiral, then Fleet Admiral. Within those are Grades, and it all roughly corresponds to Levels in other games. Rear Admiral 5, the current cap, is basically Level 45, so the game can currently accommodate up to Level 80, and further if they extend the number of grades in some of the higher ranks.
