Oh yeah, you're right. It was sold as a separate thing for 386s. There was a socket in the motherboard for it.
I think it was the Intel 80486 that had it built in. I believe they called it an 80487 if the coprocessor was actually on. I don't know, it's been a while. Silly model numbers.
