They promised us...

... Flying cars. Where are the flying cars?

What science fiction idea that is actually within the realms of possibility do you wish was already here?
And I am thankful for every day the skies aren't clogged with the idiots who can't even handle four wheels on the road.

My thought exactly. I see those flying car scenes and it scares the hell out of me. So many idiots can't stick to their own lanes when held down by gravity; how the hell will they stick to any lanes in the sky? I'd rather stick to transporters, thanks.

Flying cars and a lot of other things envisioned in the past are well within our technological capabilities to achieve today.
The reason why we don't see them is because of 'MONEY'.
There was an article months ago here on Trekbbs which essentially had this statement from scientists.

As for what kind of a sci-fi device would I want to exist in real life ...
A star-ship filled with replicators, transporters, warp drive and formidable weaponry.
:D

If I have to choose only 1 ... then it would probably have to be the replicator (with an abundant energy source).

I want to commute to work via a Rocket pack..

Fuck all that star ships, transporters, and such. How about advanced medicine where cancer is eradicated and organs/limbs can be regenerated.

The refrigerator which monitors freshness dates and such for you and reorders commonly used products like milk, eggs, bread, etc.

The toilet which monitors bodily waste and tells you when its time to visit the doctor.

The bed that monitors life signs and tells you when its time to visit the doctor.

Cars that drive themselves.

A voice activated home computer which can control all appliances.

Free Healthcare

This.

This. Also an end to aging.

Non harmful alternatives to smoking, drinking, and other commonly used and socially acceptable recreational drugs.

I would never want any of that. The potential for invasion of privacy is just too great.

Although they might be useful for disabled and/or bedridden homeowners who might not be able to shop for themselves or who have additional medical needs. Imagine if somebody falls, they can't get up, and so their bed comes and gets *them*...

Now I'm envisioning a bloody axe wielding bed looming over a woman and her overturned wheelchair.

Beds were created by man.

They rebelled.

They evolved.

I'd sleep on Tricia Helfer if I had the chance.

Seems to me the thing that the ball was really dropped on is the voice activated stuff. There's dribbles and bits here and there: wireless phones can dial by name, my wife has the Google voice thing on her iPhone, but it really feels like it could be so much more by now.

Free healthcare? Yeah, that's starting to feel more like fantasy. At least with science fiction, there's the possibility of it coming true.

My biggest disappointment is the lack of Human colonization of the Solar System. It's the 21st Century, for Pete's sake!

LOL! I just had this conversation with a friend, asking where were our flying cars and jet packs. Her response was, can you imagine what a nightmare it would be with people texting and FLYING or flying under the influence?

I want Jupiter to turn into a star like it did in 2010.

Programmable contact lenses which change colour and function.

mood contacts?

Lucy Liu-bot. :)

umm, I think Quagmire has one of those.

I'll wait for the Jordan Ladd-bot.
