Unpopular Trek Opinions — What Are Yours?

QUOTE from Bill J: "What is people's fascination with eliminating Star Trek from the franchise? Is it some type of jealousy?"

Stylistically it doesn't fit post-1987 Trek. It is the minority (one series vs. 3 or 4). Its style is off-putting to many not raised with it.

OPINION: Spock should have stayed dead. My apologies if this is a repeat. It's a long thread.

The mediocre series want to get rid of the one great series that got them this far. Let them get their own universe if they're not happy with TOS.

I liked the scene with Spock's "pain" in TFF. Thought it gave the character a nice bookend--what his father said in disgust at his birth, his best friend said as a heartfelt tribute at his death.

What is people's fascination with eliminating Star Trek from the franchise? Is it some type of jealousy?

The opposite point of view is more common, at least that is the current trend: modern Trek is not fit to shine the boots of TOS, etc. That's probably why The Super Brando posted his opinion in the unpopular opinions thread ;)

What motivates those who would like to excise modern Trek from the franchise? Is it some type of jealousy? More likely people just like what they like, and are most comfortable with whatever attracted them to the franchise in the first place.

Major Kyra is boring

Anything with the Ferengi and/or Klingons involved is even more boring

The whole thing with the Taliban and the Suliban just didn't work out

The holographic doctor can be entertaining (highly debatable)

Seven of Nine is fun to watch

It'd be fun to have more episodes with Troy's mother

I think you've hit the nail on the head--people just think of what they started watching as the "real thing." I know when TNG first came out I thought it was just awful--who were these strange people, and why did they call this strange ship the Enterprise? But I guess it grew on me.

Doctor Who's the same way--for me, anyone but Tom Baker's not the "real" Doctor, but there are plenty who'd say the same about Hartnell or Tennant.

IDIC?

Berman & Braga Voyager ISN'T the Seven/Janeway/Doctor show. In fact, under Braga's reign, characters such as Chakotay and Harry still had two episodes a season (usually pretty good ones). It wasn't until Kenneth Biller took over that the Doctor and Seven took over pretty much every episode.

Still yet, I've noticed there are barely any episodes specifically about Janeway. It's usually some crewmember with a strong opinion about something and bitches her out for the entire episode.

TOS is garbage and shouldn't be considered canon. It was only thought of as good because most other tv and film up to that point was even worse garbage.

Star Trek began with the movies, established its foundation with TNG, and reached its full potential with DS9.
Phasers on KILL.:shifty:

TOS is the weakest trek production to date:
nearly half the episodes are either boring, silly or both.

Probably shouldn't throw those stones when Modern Trek has produced such classics as...

Emergence
Ferengi Love Songs
Spirit Folk
Daedalus

Most of Star Trek is silly or outlandish by its very nature. But the one thing I'd never call The Original Series is boring.

Hell... you want to talk about silly.

I'm watching Samaritan Snare from Star Trek: The Next Generation right now.

Yeah, those series are so brazen and insolent! How dare they! Someone should give them a good talking-to!

oh wait... :vulcan:

Lets face it, you know Berman, Piller and Braga all snickered how silly TOS was behind Gene's back.

I absolutely agree, as long as they keep it funny. She was just so great as the comic nightmare mother/mother-in-law. Just the way she could say, "Jean Luc! Such thoughts!" Maybe it's an acquired taste--FWIW, I couldn't stand her when I first saw the show as a teenager.

Now, I can see that she's just the ultimate nightmare of any adult--your mother shows up and completely embarrasses you in front of your boss, workmates, and ex/significant other. Plus she's a telepath.

I'm also a little disappointed that we never got a Mr. Homn-centered episode.

I am uncommon and think the new Trek movie was actually very good addition to the series.
