Lightning in a magnetic bottle?

I really like the new Trek flick because I feel it captured some small percentage of magic from TOS that was lost in the theatrical movies. Don't get me wrong, I'm a BIG Shat fan, but, like, RED uniforms? David? No extended Deflector dish? Sybok??

Thoughts?

Shatner-Kirk had to run across a kid sooner or later. With all of the slam-bang-thank-you-alien-mmam going on over the years. I liked the red uniforms as dress uniforms, but they really needed a separate duty uniform. Something short-sleeved like from TMP but different. Why does the deflector dish need to be extended? Maybe it can do both. I would have shot Sybok within five minutes of meeting him. "Show me your pain"? "Share this!... Bang!"
Loved the new movie too. But it could have been cleaned up.
I volunteer to proof-read the next script.

I liked the red uniforms, they lent themselves well to the overall nautical feel that the films were often trying to evoke.

I like how the TMP deflector dish is a no-no, but the lop-sided slightly melted look of Trek XI's Enterprise is somehow okay.

As each Trek incarnation has come along, I have been supportive (with only one exception... and I eventually did try).
- I had no problems with the red uniforms at the time, because they were such an improvement from the TMP pajamas.
- I liked the updated look of Enterprise-A.
- Bumpy-headed Klingons looked menacing, as they should.

- The black/grey TNG uniforms were an improvement on the technicolor ones from the series.
- I understood the evolution of Enterprise-D into the large, curvy ship of the 24th century.

- I liked the lightweight uniforms of VOY with POCKETS.

- I liked the uniforms of ENT because they were an ancestor to later uniforms of TOS.
- Ditto for the NX-01, same reason.

- I like Abrams' Star Trek because it had the adventure, humor, danger and fun of TOS brought into the modern era.
- I like the new Enterprise because it updated the classic look with a modern one. I love muscle cars and it is the muscle car version of the original; just as the new Camaro, Mustang and Challenger are updated muscle cars for the modern era.

I liked them too. They do look like Navy Class As. But you don't wear Class As ALL THE TIME.

I really like the Enterprise-E grey and black uniforms. I think that the VOY uniforms would make a good companion duty uniform, maybe with some minor alterations.

Those uniforms were based on US Navy submarine duty uniforms. As was the NX-01's interior was based on a nuclear submarine's interior.

I agree. The old TOS-based films were stuck with an aging cast by the time they got going, so they pretended to move the characters forward in their lives while kludging the storylines so that changes in their lives and careers were meaningless. The old TOS-based films were never much like TOS. Abrams's movie returns the show and characters to the time and setting that made them fun to begin with.

LOL, this sounds like the TOS movies were no fun at all.

I thought The Final Frontier was the closest to TOS when it comes to feel, characters, story, pacing, action, humor and effects. Had Shatner gotten the budget for his rock creature, it would have been just like TOS.

Actually you are correct here, IMO.
BTW, I know a guy that worked on practical FX for the movie, & he said the optical FX team bit off way more than they could chew. They needed a lot more time & money & tests, but, Paramount settled for an epic fail.
I feel bad for the Shat.
