Well, this award is a laughing stock.

Star Trek and Avatar?

Come on.

A plothole-ridden abomination, and a weak, cliche-ridden, visually manipulative, 1-dimensional characters, SFX-fest.

They shouldn't even be in the top ten.

 

I wasn't aware "The Motion Picture" was in the list.

 

So, "Moon" should be a shoe-in, right?

 

With that list I don't think ST even makes the top three, sorry. I personally like it better than most of them other than Avatar, but the genre crowd is very fond of a couple of the other movies included.

 

The genre crowd is not so easily won over with loud noises and flashy lights.

Note that the harsher reviews for ST09 came from reviewers with an affinity for genre movies, while the one praising it to gills were the clueless mainstream critics who wouldn't know a hyperdrive from a hyena. And even they acknowledged it was dumber than a bag of hammers.

It's a race between Avatar, Trek XI, Moon, and District 9, then. I don't particularly see Up or Coraline as being sci fi.

 

Yeah, a few insular snots complained and people with lives by and large did not. Did you have a point?

Of course, one had to go looking pretty hard for "harsher reviews" at all, since the movie was so massively popular with all kinds of people.

Anyone who thinks that knowing or caring what a "hyperdrive" is ought to be taken seriously as a qualification for or criterion of evaluating a movie or any other fiction should definitely stay out of that line of work.

 

People are really harsh but was it meant for just Trek fans at least they made a Trek film to cater to a wider audience and isn't that a good thing?

 

It's a great thing, since it resurrected a basically dead property while satisfying 90% of the Trek fan base.

Roger Ebert is an insular snot?

 

I hope it wins just to piss every single detractor off if nothing else.

 

Ebert liked this movie better than he has a number of recent Trek outings, but he's no longer fond of the Trek Franchise as a whole (his review of Nemesis had a great deal to say about Trek in general, going well beyond criticism of that particular film's flaws - in short, he was done with Trek).

His review was reasonable, and didn't trash the film. Yeah, the "genre-oriented reviewers" who disliked the film are mostly insular snots.

I understand that the relatively few detractors of this movie would like it to be a failure in some important respect...the problem there is, that it just isn't. It's been hugely successful, popular and has gone a long way toward making the careers of several folks who worked on it.

And in 2012 we get the next installment of this, the current and only version of Star Trek that's going to exist for quite a while. There's every reason to expect it to be as popular and successful as this one, and probably more so.
