Oh no!!! Killer Africans!

Well, having nothing else to do, my family and I decided to watch THE SWARM. This is that movie about killer bees that came out in the late 70s and stars Michael Caine, Richard Widmark, and even SLIM PICKENS has a cameo...

But as the move progressed, and the bees began to Swarm, and head to Houston, they stopped calling them African Bees, or Bees, and called them Africans.

In one scene, General Richard Widmark comes into the room and, very passionately yells, "We've GOT to find away to stop the AFRICANS from over running the city." And later he's yelling, "we have to burn the Africans out of the city!"

I saw this movie at the theaters when it came out all those years ago and remember finding it odd then. The movie is actually pretty bad. I think Warners should go back and redo the audio because, and I know this is just nit picking, but it is some what silly, and offensive.

mystery science theater needs to give this movie a treatment....

In one stupid scene? Caine and his girl friend are being chased by bees...they have to get inside a store on the side of the street so they can be safe. The door is locked! So what does caine do? He smashed the glass door in with his fist so he can unlock the door...dumb ass!!!

The person who wrote the script and the silly dialog should be forced to spend time in jail; it is that bad.

:guffaw::guffaw::guffaw::guffaw:

Just reading the description sounds hilarious...

Yes, it's offensive, but the movie is from the 1970s, and it sounds like a MST3K type of film....

I may have to watch it (with friends of course) for the laugh factor....

[Oh, my insides hurt now from laughing so hard....and I haven't even had breakfast yet....]

And while they're doing that, perhaps all movie studios should go through their libraries and alter the audio of all the classic films past that might have silly or potentially offensive dialogue. Rewriting history is so much fun!

They do that in our education system already, so why not in our movies? My daughter is in the 10th grade, and I swear her History book is written by Asimov.

No, of course they shouldn't go back and change silly dialog that might be offensive. But they could have a new label or warning "Warning, this movie has offensive dialog written by racist whiteys" or something like that...

Do you need to be offended at something? You know what the lines are referring to, so you take them out of context to find that offense.

Wow.

Typical defense of offensive material.

Wow Wow.

Come on, man, don't be ridiculous. You know full well what the "Africans" they were referring to were. Yes, to 21st century ears it sounds bad, but place it in context.

You have no right to never be offended. Your suggestion that Warner Bros go back through their back catalogue and sanitise any references or dialogue that might be offensive is offensive in of itself.

Wasting time discussing such a lame movie is offensive. Dr. Zhivago, anyone? :p

That piece of Black-supremacist propaganda?

Where Pasha burns a village, and justifies his actions on the grounds that "They were selling horses to the Whites"?

Anti-White racist trash.

...

What?

Dr. Zhivago was (or is) a lame movie?

I have yet to see it, but I thought it was considered a legendary film....

Or the anti-Asian propaganda film:

The Last Samurai....

Now look what Robert started...;)

^I think that was Mistral's point - we should discuss Dr. Zhivago instead of lame movies like this.

Personally, I think referring to Communists as "Reds" is an insult to Native Americans.

Or maybe that was the other way around. I forget.

:p

Great idea! While we're at it, let's go edit out all the lines from TOS that now come across as sexist in a modern context, too. That'll be a grand ol' time. :)

Thought this was going to be a thread about Black Hawk Down. Was disappointed.

(Although The Swarm is indeed terrible. "Bees, bees, MILLIONS OF BEES!")
