Betcha V will be back next year. ABC's gonna need it and the demo has been holding pretty steady for five weeks now.

I know you don't usually do Friday ratings, but I was wondering if anyone knew how well the show "Who Do You Think You Are?" has been doing with its new episodes?

Sorry I missed this question didn't recheck the thread and I do try to merge the friday thread with thursday ratings but was busy lately on those days so away from PC alot. To answer your question...

The last episode scored 5.21 million and 1.2/5 demo, which was a series low. However since its spring and friday night it's expected and the show is already renewed for a 2nd season.

before that the show scored 6.35 million and 1.3/5.

The fixation on the demo leads to curious results. The Good Wife is supposed to be weak because it has a low demo, but its demo is higher than V's. Going by the demo, V should be marginal at best. The Good Wife is not marginal, which shows total ratings do still count, contra claims that the demo is all that counts. If The Good Wife is not marginal with that demo, then V shouldn't be in jeopardy either. The only difference is that The Good Wife has much larger total ratings.

In the end, what matters most is the revenue stream to the network which depends on who owns the production company, the licensings fees, arrangements for acillary revenues and a host of nonpublic data.

Even the parts that we do know, the ratings, have lots of proprietary information on ratings broken down to income demographics, geographical distribution and ethnic demographics. Fixating on the general 18-49 demo is just not the key.

And lastly, renewal depends not just upon the show ratings but comparisons to lead in ratings, comparisons to previous shows' ratings for that time slot and prospects for superior replacements.

^ The demo is the key data for the ad companies so the networks care more about that than viewers in most cases. However its not just the demo, Boston Legal for example was watched by upper middle class audiences with loads of $$$ so it offered ABC a different source of ad revenue. The 18-49 demo itself is a little stupid as people over 50 tend to have more of the wealth and spend it just as much as young people spend there money.

When it comes to 10pm shows I think the demo matters less and total viewers or the BL factor of income of the general audience becomes a bigger factor.

Thank you very much for the information. I find the show to be okay myself, but I'm interested in it more because it relates to my job and it seems like everyone at work has an opinion about whether or not it is helping or hurting our field. I think that anything that gets people interested in history is a good thing.
