Improve Generations?

O.k, first of all the nexus should have had an alien of some type(telepathic?) at the other end of it pulling some strings. Some kind of connection to another dimension that is seeping into our dimension bringing bad things and has to be closed up and sealed but is very alluring to people, like flies to a flame.

How about Mysterious Future Guy from Enterprise that was never resolved?

When I worked in movie theatres I had a saying when we screened a bad movie: "Let me get my film splicer and in 20 minutes we'll have a decent movie."

I think if future guy was Romulan he was part Klingon or Suliban and was trying to ethnically clense himself.

I would junk the existing story and create one of my own. I would open the movie in deep space. Floating in the void is a chess table. Sitting on one side of the table is Trelane. On the other side is Q. They're discussing which is the better captain. Kirk or Picard. It starts to get really fanboy hostile when Q proposes a wager. Kirk Vs. Picard. If Trelane wins then Q has to be his manservant for all eternity. If Q wins then Trelane gives up his powers and lets Q turn him into a teenager where he has to serve out his mortal life as an acting ensign on Picard's bridge.

This shit out of the way we cut to Kirk at the end of TUC. He's taking the Enterprise off on her final cruise when BAM she's hailed by Starfleet Command alerting them to a GINORMOUS Klingon battlecruiser wreaking havoc across the galaxy. To preserve the new peace Kirk has to find the ship and stop it before war breaks out.

Then we cut to Picard and the Enterprise-D. He's hailed by Command and alerted that a Borg cube is headed straight for Earth and he's the Enterprise is the only ship in range to stop it. So naturally he's off to fight the Borg.

Of course what Kirk and Picard don't know is that they're being played. Kirk is seeing the Klingons and not the Enterprise-D. Picard of course is seeing the Born and not the Enterprise-A. Now the D of course has the advantage of a more powerful ship but Kirk has fought a First Federation ship which was far more powerful that the D and he has all the experience so for every thing that Picard can think to do Kirk has a work around.

It's a battle of technology vs. instinct so it's a closer match than one would think.

In the end Kirk and Picard figure each other out. I dunno how. Maybe because Picard is having an easier time with the Borg than he should be. Maybe it's because these Klingons seem to be fighting fair. Maybe it's because Spock's telepathic mind and Troi's empathic minding are touching each others across the cosmos but one way or the other they manage to see each other for what they really are and they turn things around on Trelane and Q.

Since it's a draw the movie ends with Trelane as Picard's acting ensign and Q as Trelane's bitch. And Kirk lives happily ever after. Picard on the other hand has Q and Trelane on his ship forever!

I'd pay to see this flick right now! I'd take the whole family! Twice! And I'd buy the DVD! And the Blu-Ray once I get a Blu-Ray player!

Thanks for that but how would you improve the existing story of the nexus which I think was another suite's idea, am I correct? without losing that aspect.

I wouldn't. The Nexus was a plot device to get Kirk and Picard together. It worked well enough. The problem wasn't getting them together. The problem was that they weren't brought together to do anything exciting. Keep the Nexus and toss out the rest of the flick. No. Toss it all out.

I think I like the Nexus as its own stellar phenomenon - "...more in Heaven and Earth..." sort of thing. Including another bad guy behind it as well as Malcolm MacDowell...maybe too much. Too arch having a supervillain behind it. I could be wrong. I guess it's in the execution.

I think the problem was that the two captains didn't need to be there together at all. Kirk's death was a punch in the gut no matter how it'd happen. And the two really had no chemistry together. Much as I love Kirk...he just seemed like bloated William Shatner on a horse getting his ring kissed. Picard just seemed so much more real. I think Moore and Braga and Berman didn't give us enough credit in thinking we needed Kirk there at all. JJ with Nimoy I can sort of see a little bit, but only because Spock Prime did more than cameo in the movie - even if Nimoy wasn't there, the part was that of an older Spock/Quinto. Kirk on the other hand could have been any ol' guy stuck in the Nexus willing to do Picard a solid.

I digress.

If I have to keep the Nexus...

The obvious solution would be to stage the climax of the film on the Enterprise-B. Have Picard suggest going back to Veridian III, and Kirk suggests a different approach to solving the problem.

I always thought that it would have been more interesting had Kirk survived the final fight. But when he and Picard look at their piece of work and exchange some final words, Picard sees the shuttle of the Enterprise-D passing by, turns around to Kirk... and Kirk's gone.

McCoy and Spock should have been there, instead of Scotty and Chekov. You can clearly see that Chekov is actually McCoy's part, while Scotty's unusual technobabble about the Nexus better fits Spock.

I never really liked the sailing ship scene. And after having seen TNG: Family recently, I dislike that they killed off Picard's entire family in a few sentences.

And when I saw the trailer for the first time, I got that exciting vibe that Kirk might be commanding the Enterprise-D for a short period of time. That would have been nice, too.

Some fairly incoherant thoughts...

How's about Kirk dies saving a planet anyone has ever heard of/that anyone cares about?

Vulcan? Maybe Earth? Kirk should have been on the bridge of the 1701-D for a while too. Maybe Picard is trapped on the planet and Kirk has to convince the TNG crew to follow his (seemingly suicidal) orders.

Crash the ship into a city! It would have cost too much, but imagine a panicked Enterprise hailing a big metropolis on earth to evacuate...and then the saucer plows though an ultra built-up megacity like the STXI version of San Fransisco. Crash! Kaboom!

You can't really fix the Nexus.
If you make it too trippy and out there, it would not fit the tone of the rest of the movie. Besides, different from eps like "Emissary" or "Desparate Measures", there was nothing really to do in the Nexus, other than making Kirk leave and help.
But without the Nexus, the whole story collapses. It ties everything together, it's a reasonable explanation for Soran's actions and a vehicle to involve Guinan plus add some "metaphysical" element (which worked well in other ST movies).

It would have been better to have made a more standard story . Kirk is thrown into the future. Hates it there at first, dislikes stiff Picard, then learns to like the 24th century and he and Picard kick ass together.
A Kirk/Scotty reunion in the 24th century would have been nice too.
No horses!

I think it needed to be more science fictiony. The nexus is a fine concept. Now it has to be developed and with personal stakes. Why was Kirk experiencing a memory while Picard was experiencing a dream. It wasn't fully realized

I had the idea that after the saucer has separated and Riker and co. are plummeting towards the planet, Kirk steers the warp core breaching Enterprise-D into the flight path of the missile that Soran has fired.

That would have been better than Kirk horse jumping over that puddle. what the heck was that all about?

Oh wow. Seriously, I love that idea. Though it'd have the same problems as Data's sacrifice: just beam him out of there in time!

Ah, no. if you care about life, then some backwater planet is as important as any other.

I have a lot of grumbles about Generations, but Kirk dying to save a few billion people on a planet we've never heard of, and will probably never hear about again... that's not one of them.

Kirk saved a planet he'd never visited: that's Kirk being a hero.

I always missed a scene where Picard gets the chance inside the Nexus to say goodbye to his brother. Because THIS is what true luck means in the face of death, at least in my opinion. He doesn't have to be revived by pushing the magical reset button, but for Picard's sake and hapiness it would have been nice to give him the chance of seeing his brother for the last time.

It's also dramatically unsatisfying.

Change the line about being able to leave the nexus and go anywhere and anytime to anywhere the nexus has been. It would make Picard look less of an idiot for choosing to go to a few minutes before the shit hit the fan and actually make it his only choice.

Now, where did I put that reworked ending....?

Ah, here it is:

The movie is unchanged up until the point where Kirk and Picard leave the Nexus and confront Soran. At which point, they ultimately fail to stop the mad El-Aurian, the missile still goes off and they wind up right back in the Nexus.

“Well,” Kirk remarked, “that didn’t work.”

“We’re picking the wrong time period,” Picard surmised, “but I can’t just throw him in the brig without some justification.”

“Wait a minute,” Kirk said, “didn’t you say he was on the Enterprise-B?”

“Yes, when it encountered the Nexus, and you were…”

Kirk ignored the last bit, “Captain, go back to whatever point you want before this mess started. I’ve got an idea that just might fix everything.”

Picard paused, then said, “I hope you know what you’re doing.”

“So do I.”

The two men shook hands. “Good luck, Captain,” Picard said.

“You, too, Captain.”

The screen goes white, as we leave the Nexus for…

Sickbay on the Enterprise-B. A frantic and bloodied Soran struggled with Chekov. “No! Don’t you see, I’ve got to get back!”

A hand clamped down on Soran’s shoulder and spun him around. He found himself staring into the intense eyes of Captain Kirk.

“Come with me,” Kirk said.

“Keptin?”

“Not now, Chekov,” as Kirk hurried the confused Soran out of the crowded sickbay.

The Enterprise-B is rocked violently by another discharge from the Nexus, as Kirk and Soran reach the main deflector control room.

“You understand what you have to do?” Kirk asked.

“Yes, Captain,” Soran said, still slightly frantic, but with a fresh determination. “Thank you.”

“Don’t mention it, now GO!”

Kirk watched from the doorway as Soran quickly made the adjustments to the defelctor.

“Cap’n,” Scotty said over the intercom, “we need that deflector pulse in one minute or we’re all dead!”

“Now you know how it feels,” Kirk said under his breath, then louder, “Almost ready, stand by!”

Soran finished the adjustments, then stepped back, and turned to face the forward bulkhead, his arms outstretched in anticipation.

“NOW, SCOTTY!” Kirk yelled as he sprinted down the corridor.

The graviton pulse lanced out from the Enterprise-B’s deflector dish, breaking the hold of the Nexus on the ship. As the ship pulls away, one last tendril reached out and took a ragged bite out of the secondary hull.

Scotty came lumbering around the corner to see Kirk looking out into gash in the hull, just beyond the environmental force field that stood between them and the hard vacuum of open space.

“Are ye all right, Cap’n?”

“I’m fine, Scotty.”

Scotty looked out into the void. “Was there anyone in there?”

“Yeah, one of the El-Aurians.”

“Poor soul.”

“He’ll be fine.”

Scott looked at his captain like he’d just grown a second head.

“I’ll explain later.”

Harriman and Chekov came running down the corridor.

“Captain Harriman,” Kirk said, “What do you say we get this ship back to Earth and these refugees some proper medical care? I’ve got a few choice words for the headquarters genius who decided to send this ship out with only half her systems installed…”

Flash forward seventy-eight years, the bridge of the Enterprise-D.

“Message coming in for you, Captain,” Worf reported. “Your brother, thanking you for your warning about the malfunctioning heating unit.”

“Thank you, Mr. Worf,” Picard said, suppressing a smile.

Counselor Troi gave him a look, sensing his emotional uptick. “Something you’d like to talk about, Captain?”

“Later, Counselor.”

“We should start getting ready,” Riker said, “Mr. Worf’s promotion ceremony is in just a couple hours.”

Picard heard the Klingon growl.

“Number One, perhaps we should rethink the scenario for Mr. Worf’s promotion. After all, it is his party.”

Worf let out a sigh of relief. “I will have an alternative prepared within the hour.”

“No hurry, Mr. Worf, and no need for theatrics if you don’t want them. If you want to go with a simple ceremony in Ten Forward, that will quite all right.”

“Thank you, Captain. I will make arrangements with Guinan.”

“Mr. Data, how long until we reach the Armagosa Array?”

“ETA two hours, fifteen minutes at our current speed.”

“Very good. You have the conn, Number One. I’ll be in my quarters, following up on that message from my brother.”

The Enterprise-D sails off, movie ends, everybody’s happy.
