Section 31: Rogue

Irony of ironies: Bashir tries to put a stop to Sloan in "Inter Arna..."--only to discover he was playing right into Sloan's hands.

Would it not be an even greater irony for him to discover another such irony, as Sloan appears in his room once again, at midnight:

Sloan: Hello...Doctor.

Bashir: :wtf:...Sloan...?

Sloan: Surprised to see me?

Bashir: But...you're dead...

Sloan: (spreads out his hands) Sorry to disappoint!

Considering that it would have been Bashir, as chief medical officer of Federation Starbase Deep Space Nine, who would have disposed of Sloan's body, that seems exceedingly improbable to me.

^And of course, there's the infamous "faked death" trick--as Grand Nagus Zek knows well.

Perhaps...

Sloan's implant is, in fact, a device that slows down bodily functions to simulate death....

After he's "disposed of", he's picked up by the "undertakers"--who are in fact 31 agents in disguise, and...

Hmm...I wonder if Sloan is genetically enhanced, himself?

With such a super-memory, that's able to store all those records we saw--I wouldn't dismiss that possibility....

Yes Kirk's plan to destroy Section 31 goes well as his idiot enemies focus on a minor doctor while he plots against them

I never read the TOS or VOY novels (actually, I've never read a VOY novel), but given that there seems to be a movement to eliminate S31, I hope at some point we'll get more info on how that's proceeding, though I guess most of the Federation's had more important things to worry about lately (I'm reading Before Dishonor now and have skimmed the first Destiny book).

Well

It's said that by the 25th century Section 31 has been exposed

Hmm....I wouldn't mind writing "the last Section 31 novel." I've never been particularly fond of them, anyway. :)

That reference in TGTMD was VERY deliberate. Even back when we were writing Rogue, Mike and I were talking with Marco about writing a novel that "tied up" Section 31. The plan discussed was variously a hardcover or a few books, and would be a cross-over between all of the various series, spear-headed by Picard and the TNG cast. But first, Voyager had to get home, and there were multiple other considerations, not to mention other book plans that were in the works both for us, and for Marco and the other editors and other writers.

Although we kept dutifully bringing up the Section 31 book regularly, it kept getting pushed back and back and back. At this point, given the change in editors, the change in Mike and my writing partnership, the MASSIVE changes in publishing, and the divergent directions that the books have gone in (not to mention the cross-overs that have been done since then) I don't know how likely that story will be to ever happen.

But it WAS planned at one point, and the seeds were planted in Rogue. If I remember correctly, Marco even had some of the other Section 31 writers make some specific additions or changes to their books to help set it up.

So, when we had the opportunity to write about the future a bit in TGTMD, we very clearly wanted to state that this HAD happened, but not give details on the how, when, or why.

^^As long as, at the end, Sloan's hand emerges from the ground of whatever grave he's buried in amidst a thunderstorm with drenching rain, I think that's a fine idea. :)

Thanks for the info Andy (can I call you Andy? it's my name as well)! Of course, now we're left wondering what might have been...

Somehow--even if Mike and Andy's book DOES get published--or some other tale claims to "wrap up" 31 for good--I refuse to take with a straight face that it's gone for real. If it's survived for 200 years, I sincerely doubt that our heroes, no matter how long they have at it, will wipe it out completely.

Somehow...the concept of a considerable part of the Bureau going undeground (well...more so than usual) is a lot more believable. IMHO, of course.

They can't "tie up" Section 31. There are too many fans who will demand more Section 31 books, and refuse to buy any others until it happens.

:scream: I don't even want to imagine what the Militant Section 31 Fans will be like.

Don't worry, you'll never hear a peep from them, though you may suspect their hand in several pro-S31 actions. :)

I always figured this was the case; Marco put a TON of foreshadowing into the novels he edited early on his Trek run. I wonder what other theorized stories he never got around to commissioning, aside from this, the Ascendants, and the Tzenkethi War novel.

Tell that to the Borg.

Technically, the Borg were "wiped out" because the UFP--i.e., Captain Hernandez--made an appeal to a super-powerful race, etc.

I don't suppose you're thinking the Kirk Cabal could recruit the Q in their efforts? ;)

DANG righ--

Wait...

To be honest, if an Ezri/Julian shipper like myself could suppress the urge to boycot TrekLit due to Unjoined...somehow, I doubt that. Still...I CAN tell you Pocket and the writers will NOT hear the end of it.
