Supernatural 5x20 "The Devil You Know"

Hello, good people. New episode airs tonight. Am I working late? Of course. :scream: This having to do my job thing for the new clients is really cutting into my leisure time, but my puppy dog needs to eat so what can you do? Paying the mortgage seems to be a necessity as well. Mark Sheppard is back. He always rocks. :techman:

Hope everyone enjoys it.

Good for you Dorian. Nice to see you here. Yes Changing Channels really did suck.....

God, that was excellent. Crowley rules. Mark Sheppard rules. The way he got Brady to reveal Pestilence's location...loved the plan. And he's not the fuzzy warm demon. He's still murdering innocent guards, manipulating Bobby into giving up things..... love the character. Sam not being a boyscout and butchering Brady's inner demon was rather choice, too. Even back then..... Poor Jessica. She really was dead the minute she and Sam said "hello."

Fluffed. :guffaw:

At this stage in the season the series should be building up to a fever pitch especially given the fact we are heading towards the climax of the Apocalypse. That fact coupled with the description of this episode made me optimistic about this episode unfortunately it turned out to be yet another ho-hum outing.

I did like a few things

--the return of Crowley--one of the few interesting recurring characters they managed to introduce this season.

--the reintroduction of the Croatoan virus--which for quite some time felt like a forgotten thread-- which ties nicely into the future glimpsed by Dean in "The End".

--I thought Bobby's acknowledgment that they were at a point that there was nothing left to loose and therefore should shake things up was very well placed.

-liked seeing Meg's chalice make a brief cameo.

-I had wondered all along how Sam would agree to be a vessel and here we get the first insight into how it might come about and frankly it works--as a plan to get him back into the cage.

--I did think the promo halfway in for next week's episode was very nice.

--I liked Crowley planning on using Bobby as bait for Death tying back to "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid".
The things I didn't care for:
--the actor's portrayal of Brady especially in the early stages of the episode-he came off campy and like a refugee from Buffy.

--The whole idea of one brother sneaking off on a rogue mission is very worn out and I didn't personally care for it or the idea of yet another captured possessed person ending up tied up in a chair on the verge of torture. Those two things could be their own drinking game on this show. And you can throw in the hell hound action sequence too--like most of the jeopardy they put the characters in this lacked any sort of tension.

--I never cared all that much about Jess or Jess/Sam so to add the late edition of Brady and the added backstory of him seems contrived. Sometimes these sorts of reinventing work here not so much plus the whole idea that it Brady that pinned Jess and killed her doesn't fly with me. We've seen demons kill before and that particular form of dispatching seemed to me as unique MO for YED.

--the episode also felt like just a way to stretch things out and add a few interesting pieces of the puzzle but as a whole the hour itself was underwhelming.

--I didn't think Jared was very strong this week either and all his contorted facial expressions seemed weird and almost silly. I've seen better from him.

-Also I realize the show tends to use a lot of less sophisticated vernacular but I could really do without a lot of it being used by demons and "idjits" needs to go it makes Bobby come off as a hayseed which he isn't.

I'm leaning towards a C or C-. Very disappointing and just more proof SN has fallen off the rails. This felt like filler instead of a story advancing the story. Sad thing is I *really* wanted to like it.

Anger has been always been Sam's problem and I fear it's going to be the thing Lucifer going to use aganist him unless Sam manages his temper better.

Well according to the YED himself he needed permission to enter the residence of his victims. This Brady character most likely through his guise manage to get permission to enter, thus makes perfect since to be the one to do the deed as a proxy. I of course haven't seen the episode yet, so I can't comment about how the role is played and if it reals out of left field. But the actually use of someone else torching Jessica does fit with what we have been told and have heard YED state.

Sorry meant to add, if he was intending to push Sam back into the Demonic world, then using a method that YED himself used would be highly logical.

I also forgot to mention in things I didn't like was the fact that Brady would never have bought into Dean trying to sell him the two rings other than as a trap.

Startrek Watcher, I knew you'd hate it. We'll never agree. Except on Swap Meat.
Yeah I don't know what happened to SN. It just has not worked at all for me this season except for "The End", Children are Our Future", "Abandon all Hope", "My Bloody Valentine".

Last season was the show's best season and this one has just been a big mess--aimless, clumsily stumbling towards the finish line, uneven, too many comedy outings, a lot of repetition, haven't cared for the recurring characters they introduced like Zach, the boys have been hit-or-miss in holding my interest. So yeah the show's prolonged stretch of mediocrity has turned me off big time and I was hoping these last three episodes would go some distance in turning that around but this episode failed.
Why not? He expected a lame plan and Dean's astonished face, as Crowley put it, was pretty genuine.
There is a difference between expecting a lame plan and getting a plan that was that weak coming from the great Dean Winchester. It should have tipped him off immediately that Dean wasn't even trying and something was up.

They haven't introduced that many reoccurring characters this season but out of those introduced this year we have Lucifer and Crowly and Becky, I think that's actually been it. Two have been well to exceptionally well done, and one has been a sad joke.

I've always wanted to see Whitney from Smallville stabbed in an alleyway aaaaaand low and behold it happened! Death is coming next weeek!

After finally watching this episode, for myself this was far more like it. Consistent tone, strong performances (hell I even liked Eric Johnson and after watching Flash Gordan, really thats almost impossible to believe).

I actually loved the idea of YED (who was working a rather large room) sending someone to watch and monitor Sam (his prize). And knowing they need Sam to get back in the saddle, manipulating events to make him the must vulnerable for his rage and anger to flourish is rather awesome. It also really cleared up one of the few missing pieces on how YEd was able to enter there home to torch her (though of course YED could have possessed anyone), I like this actually better.

I love, love the idea of Sam thinking to use himself as the means to trap Lucifer in the Pit. Its both a great idea and a terrible one, and it plays into both Sam's belief in his own strength and wanting to take charge of his destiny, and it also gives him the ability to make up for all the pain an death caused by his accidental release of Lucifer (by of course being sent into the Pit). I thought that also played nicely into his drinking.

Nice to see Sam bring up that people can resist possession. He saw John manage it briefly, he saw Bobby do it, and he heard about the anti-Christ's mom doing it. And with knowing that JOhn was briefly able to regain some control over YED (A major player), it shows that it's not just lesser demons this can happen with. Of course, Lucifer isn't a demon, and is certainly stronger then Azazel, but Azazel is still a large step up from a demon lackey.

I loved the idea of Crowly needing to make a deal to give them the location of Death. And frankly Bobby is a perfect person to do this. He wants to die already, and Bobby also keeps his eye on the Big Picture. He wouldn't be willing to go to the Pit for his own life or even the boys I think (or he would have dealt for his wife). But doing so for the chance to stop Lucy is a whole other option.

I loved the use of the hell hounds (I still want to see if a charged Sam could destroy them, and after what they did to Dean I would have no problem seeing him take another sample of demon blood to try for a brief second I thought that was what was going to happen).

And I like that the tone was a bit sedate, serious but not full on pulse pounding battle to the end, or even the tone they managed so well in Abandon All Hope. Basically it's still set up, and the tone needs to be able to build.

The two quibbles that I have with this episode is that, they told instead of showed. Once is certainly understandable (and most likely tied to cost) the other would easily have been done.

Those are, I think they could have flashed briefly back to showing a demon placing something on or in the Impala. Would hardly add any real cost.

The other is I wish we could have flashed briefly back to Stanford, to see Jessica and Brady and Sam at that point of time. But having the money to secure the actress (and a what would have had to be a set redress) for a few quick jump cuts is probably not the wisest thing to do on a show with such a limited budget (it's one of the joys with Lost's budget is that it allows them to utilize guest stars for tiny, tiny segments years down the road). But it is still something I think would have helped the drama of the story. And with just a few exceptions you should show and not tell, whenever possible.

Startrek Watcher, I knew you'd hate it.
I did a bit of research and here is a link to a review of someone who apparently is a big SN fan--so it isn't just me with issues and reading over it she seems to have some of the same issues I did with the episode.

I probably wouldn't use a source of comparison someone who loved, loved Changing Channels.

She loved Changing Channels?!?--you are right--never mind ignore her.

Actually I was just pointing out that die hard fans and critics of a show can share opinions. I didn't want Dorian to think that I go out of my way to criticize SN.

Oh one thing I did forget to put in my post. COncerning Brady being there to watch and monitor Sam. This was also consistent with YED behavior and actions with Sam as he has done this before, though of course it didn't work out like he intended. He sent Meg (a demon) to be his proxy when Sam separated from Dean in the very first season. Now you can argue that Meg was to either get Sam to realize he needed to be with his brother, or for Meg to keep around him as he goes off into the world on his own. But it clearly shows that YED would put a demon on to Sam.

While hell just using the three of us, Dorian, yourself, and me. You can see over a batch of episodes a wide variety of viewpoints. Both in what we hoped to see and how we felt about what was in the final product.
