Your Favorite Mary Sues

Lapis Exilis

I ran across the story that gave birth to the term Mary Sue and ended up in my favorite black hole of timesuck, TV Tropes. And it got me to thinking about Mary Sues in regular old fiction (as opposed to in fan fiction, which the lifespan of the universe limits us from fully exploring).

Who's a Mary Sue that's been masquerading as a protagonist in novel, play, film or tv?

I didn't make it all the way through this book due to the extreme Mary Sue-ishness of its protagonist and we might as well get this out of the way quickly:

Bella from Twilight with her Magical Boyfriends and strange ability to be the center of attention for no reason whatsoever.

And then there's James Bond in, well, every James Bond story ever. Devastatingly handsome, all women fall ni love with him, capable of pulling off every improbable feat while wearing a tuxedo and maintaining witty repartee.

Anita Blake from the series with the same name.

She's a tough-as-nails, zombie raising, vampire slaying, harem collection kick-ass woman.

What's not to love?

^Every time I've stuck a toe in Laurell K. Hamilton's work I've recoiled in horror at the Mary Sues...

When I read the description of what Anita looked like and then flip over to the back of the book, I knew I was in for a rough ride. Laurell looks like a chunkier version of Anita.

Then, I read Laurell's bio, and it's pretty much Anita's bio.

Laurell's love interests are pretty much the personalities for Anita's love interests. Though, I will say I doubt Laurell's love interests have the package size of Anita's.

I mean, I really could go on and on with the comparisons for Mary Sueism here.

According to TV tropes, Wesley is not really a Mary Sue - though his entry is pretty hilarious. Interestingly, Lana Lang shows up as a The Wesley also, so she may not really qualify as a Mary Sue.

Oh... another one is Richard Rahl from the Sword of Truth series. He's another over-powered type. Hm... he may actually fall into God Mode Sue, but he's still a Sue.

Some of my favorites:

Batman
Seven of Nine
Chloe Sullivan (Smallville)
Anakin Skywalker
Luke Skywalker (Star Wars EU)
Jacen Solo

What's-Her-Character's-Name, on the Stargate show... Amanda Tapping, I think, is the actress?

Egads...

Samantha Carter. Yep, I always thought she was a Mary Sue. She can save any planet, fight any bad guy, handle any weapon.. it got a bit old after awhile.

My favourite? Dr. Rick Dagless, M.D. of course!

^Lol^

How is weasly not a mary sue again? Is it because the fans don't like him or because they were able to drag the character out of the fire with some of his final eps?
