Let's Talk Pie

You know, in the thread that was closed (About this board being the best message board on the internet), I started getting into a conversation with various posters on the good that is Pie or Cobbler. Given that I really don't make that many threads around here, I would actually make a MISC thread for the first time in what feels like years to continue that conversation.

So what's your favorite Pie or cobbler. What is your "comfort" pie as it were. For me, I love all kinds of Pie, but anything with Apple is great. Doesn't need to be fancy, but some simple apple with whipped topping on it is delicious. As for Cobbler, it's been a while since I've had any, and it will probably be until Christmas before I might have a chance to even look at the stuff. Wish it was sooner.

I'm a fan of cherry cobbler with a crumble topping. But, I insist that it have vanilla ice cream served with it, and the cobbler must be warm.

I'm a picky cobbler eater.

Chocolate cream with a graham cracker crust! Hell, ANYTHING with a graham cracker crust! This is what makes cheesecake (which is technically a pie) so good. But I hate those rip-offs of cheesecake like chocolate and fruit and weird crust---stick to the original and decorate it with a fruit or chocolate jus on top if you can't help yourself. These other variations are often sweet and blaspheme my dear graham cracker crust.

For me, I grew up eating apple pie made in the Dutch method (cinnamon sugar mixed in with the apples and then a streusel topping) so apple pie made in any other style is just lackluster. This is also why apple crumble is delicious.

Strawberry rhubarb pie is actually really good, too. Weird, but good. Is rhubarb common in other countries? My friend from Britain told me it's fairly rare but I'm sure it is still grown in Europe. I never saw any when I was living in France.

I love pie, and I love cobbler equally. My favorite cobbler is peach cobbler, with blueberry cobbler a close second. My favorite pie is cherry pie, with lemon meringue pie a close second and pumpkin pie a very close third. I like ice cream on all of those pies (except the lemon meringue).

Greenguy, here in Ohio, my Grandmother used to make a killer rhubarb pie. I mean, it was delicious. You'd punch a nun if it mean you could get a slice of strawberry rhubarb pie. This was some time ago and I haven't had it since, but man, it was good. It was at least good enough to stick in my memory for the past 20 years!

Yeah, I like pies but I don't like pie crust. I prefer a graham cracker crust or something like apple crisp instead. There's nothing worse than a piece of pie that's overwhelmed by too much stupid pie crust and not enough filling. :klingon:

I just bought a sugar free cherry pie and a sugar free lemon meringue pie thanks to this thread.

I have to echo previous posters by expressing my love for strawberry rhubarb!! If it's on the menu, I have to try it. Second would be a good lemon meringue. No droopy, slimy meringue, but a melt-in-the mouth, lighter-than-air, perfectly browned meringue on top of that lemon filling...

Does Perkin's deliver? :)

Haha, that sounds great! I'd love to get some if all I have to do is punch an ordained member of the Catholic Church! I think the preponderance of strawberry rhubarb pie might be a Southern/Midwestern thing? When I went to school in Los Angeles, my friends would ask me what rhubarb was, and why I would ever put it in a pie.

Pumpkin is amazing, too. Put some whipped cream and/or vanilla ice cream/custard/gelato on it and we're golden.

One little thing can revive a guy,
And that is a homemade rhubarb pie.
Serve it up, nice and hot,
Maybe things aren't as bad as you thought.

Mama's little baby loves rhubarb, rhubarb,
Be-bop-a-re-bop rhubarb pie!

My Gram made an awesome strawberry rhubarb pie. We used to grow it in our backyard (in Connecticut). My own best recipe would be cherry rhubarb. Gets a lot of requests! Second most requests is apple.

Favorite "weird" pie: Green pumpkin, from the Little House on the Prairie cookbook. (It's a lot like apple.)

Craving right now: Blueberry, and I have been for about four weeks now. I may stop at Denny's before work tomorrow and pick up a slice for dinner.

Crumbles and cobblers are perfect when I don't feel like dealing with a crust, or when I'm craving topping. I could just eat brown sugar/oatmeal topping by the spoonful sometimes.
