Is there a fantasy film OTHER than LOTR?

It was a very good one, yes. Not as good as LOTR or the best Potter movies, but better than the Golden Compass or Narnia. It was probably the best "bed time faerie tale" movie I've seen since The Princess Bride and Edward Scissorhands.

Not swords and sorcery at all, but Pan's Labyrinth is a more mature fantasy film than most. Though, unless you're living in a cave somewhere, you've probably already seen it.

I also really liked The Lady in the Water, though I'm in the minority.

Strings is a fantasy epic about puppets living in a world of puppetry. It's kind of high-concept so in that respect it's a bit more mature than most. It's not really high-fantasy either though.

Hawk the Slayer remains a favorite of mine. It has all the trappings of D&D; Elven archer, dumb giant, mysterious witch and a hero with one of the best magic swords ever.

I also remember a made for TV movie with a hero with a magic bow. [edit]Found it Archer: Fugitive from the Empire

Also, don't forget the Beastmaster movies, Ator from MST3K, The Last Unicorn, and Big Trouble in Little China.

Two of my favorites from the 80's are:

Legend with Tom Cruise, Mia Sara and Tim Curry.

Flesh & Blood with Rutger Hauer, Jennifer Jason Leigh

I LOVED Ladyhawke. I highly recommend that one.

Also, Time Bandits (fantasy of a sort), The Dark Crystal, The Princess Bride, and if you like Bakshi animation, then Wizards.

That's weird, I could have sworn I posted about Hawk the Slayer earlier in this thread!?! Did some posts get eaten?

Stardust is an awesome movie...

Erm, Stardust is an awesome book, but really a rather medicore movie - IMHO, anyway.

Ladyhawke has a beautiful and beautifully rendered story - nearly sunk by the horrid all synthesizer Toto soundtrack. Still totally worth watching though.

Willow is fairly kiddish, but a lot of fun thanks to a fantastic lead in Warwick Davis.

Just rewatched Dragonheart with the nephews - a very solidly good dragon movie. Though if you want a good dragon movie, the best one I've ever seen is currently in theaters. While not swords and sorcery (which, really, neither is Dragonheart, both lacking in sorcery though having plenty of swords), How to Train Your Dragon is really fantastic.

I know it's not a popular opinion, but I can't stand Excalibur. I find it to have leaden pacing and a nearly incoherent story. Plus all those guys walking around in gleaming armor takes me right out of the story. If it's light enough to eat dinner in, it won't do you much good in a fight...

Stardust, loved both the book and the movie.

I tolerated Ladyhawk's soundtrack, good thing the movie rises above. Toto, btw, did a MUCH better ST for Dune.

With you on Lady. I'll have to check out Strings.

Oh, another not mentioned yet...Mirrormask...

Yeah, I think the dwarf was fishing over there.

Alan Parsons did Ladyhawke. Don't know about Dune, though.

huh - I swear last time I saw it I thought I noted Toto on the credits, but perhaps I was hallucinating at the time. Dune was definitely Toto - I just looked it up.

I don't think it was as bad as that, but I have no desire to watch it again. I think a lot of people around here give it an extra point because Patrick Stewart is in it. It did get good reviews at the time, however.

Interesting trivia: the producers of the film intended to produce an adaption of Lord of the Rings but couldn't secure the rights. The sets and costume designs in the movie are similar to what would have been used if they had been successful.

I'm glad the Tolkien estate waited for PJ. :)

Oh, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. I'd also include Highlander in this.

Good calls. Not strictly Tolkeinesque, but both great fantasy films. I need to watch Highlander again. It's amazing how a flick that should have been totally cheesy achieves fabulous cool, even with it falling apart somewhat in the Third Act.
