This book just isn't good.
It's EPIC.
I started reading the novel to pick up the loose threads of my beloved TNG crew from Greater Than The Sum. I quickly became completely enthralled with the Erika Hernandez and Columbia story though. The Enterprise-E, Titan, Aventine, and Columbia stories were all very well told and I think each got a fair amount of time being front and center in the book.
Having only read Taking Wing several years ago, and having stopped with the DS9-R several years ago too, I had a hard time picturing some characters and keeping them straight, but that's my fault for not keeping up with TrekLit!
I liked the Defiant bit at the beginning, the little Tom Paris snippet, and even the Calhoun/Excalibur reference. Hearing from Martok was a bonus, as well.
Just a truly great work of fiction. Much of what I have read lately has either been paint by the numbers stuff (Death in Winter) or big goofy fun (Before Dishonor).
I've already read six treek books this month, but there's no way I'm not starting Mere Mortals tonight after the ballgame. Don't be shocked if I'm finished with it tomorrow!
