So we know that DS9 and the Defiant make an appearance, has anyone encountered the Enterprise yet?

Yes. There's a voiceover from the then-LTC Spock.

When does the Defiant make an appearance in STO? (I understand that as THE Defiant, not picking a Defiant class ship for tier 4)
The Defiant assists you against some Klingons in a tribble mission. It is under the command of James Kurland who is the commander of DS9 in 2409. I have seen Kira referenced as a Kai, so I believe she's now a religeous figure of sorts. I expected it to whoop it up but I was dissapointed in the end. It's only got dual phaser cannons and a phaser beam bank mounted fore and doesn't use rapid fire or attack patterns. Sigh.

I did also find a new Link set up on a planet and encountered a Changeling. I then fought Lass who choked the #@$@# out of me with tentacle arms. The Changeling that popped up to say hi looked quite a bit like Odo (they all do I guess) but isn't named.

Last thing was best though. I hit RA5 just before my sub ended on Thursday midnight. The last mission I did had me beamed aboard a certain starship by a certain capricious entity in order to rescue a soon-to-be station commander. There was future interference by 8472/Borg/
folks. They sent back a super Borg, and although it's not really extrapolated on in detail, when you fight the guy - who sucks but can be soloed with Bridge Officers - you can pretty easily figure out it's an assimilated Jem'Hadar.

I geeked out quietly.

Very disappointed to hear that the console versions are "on hold". I was looking forward to playing this, but I don't think my computer could handle it...

Thankful that I built a new computer before this game came out (unrelated, but a nice benefit). I can enjoy the whole thing with the graphics maxed out, and the computer doesn't even blink :)

This... is almost scary. She had faith and what not, but she's almost... to angry through most of the show for me to actually picture her in this position.

Today, I completed 'Infected'. Quite fun, not as difficult as I thought. Only annoying bit was when someone went 'Need' on the final drop and nabbed the damn thing!

^ That's always a pain.

Now that I'm halfway up the Lt. Commander ranking and have tried to fit my cruiser out with the best gear I can, I've run into the problem of not running into any good drops at all. I just keep running into battery drops after battery drops.

I'm hoping I'll have more good drops once I level up again, but I'm afraid I'm getting an early taste of what the game is like for those that level 5 already...

Hopefully STO has a couple people working on sandbox features and custom mission generators or something.

You can I think, but only single cannons.
On the other hand cannons are totally misplaced on a cruiser anyway, you rarely get your ship to turn around on the enemy to get him into the firing arc. The time it takes you to do that is more than enough to blast him out of the sky with 240° arrays.

Of course the turrets are nice since they have a 360 degree firing arc, it's a shame they don't have dual turrets.

Eh, I just leave a nice array in the front, with turret in the back, so they get double fire through most of the arc.

just got a runabout filled it wth some high'ish level stuff and went into a few lower level encounters.
had to learn a whole new way of fighting with only one firing arc and limited weapons. fun though

This also makes me sad :( There's no way I could really afford a good PC atm, so any games atm have to be on the Xbox 360 for me to play...

Blame Microsoft. This goes a bit beyond STO, but originally, the first MMO Cryptic was going to make (with Microsoft doing the majority of the backing/funding in conjunction with mavel Comics) was marvel Universe Online (slated for both a PC and XBox 360 release. However, during development Microsoft assumed and wanted assurances from Cryptic that MUO would rival World of Warcraft in overall subscription numbers. (I won't go into an overall MMO history lesson, but WoW's sub numbers and phenominal success are considered the exception and not the rule - based on factors of the time WoW hit the MMO market, etc.)

Anyway, Cryptic was honest and said, "No. We seriously doubt MUO will get 10+ million subs."

Microsoft's Response: "Well then, this project is a waste of time. Why should we back any project that doesn't fit the Microsoft definition of success - that definition being: 'We're a leader and number one, or very close behind..."

So, MUO was scrapped, but Cryptic, wanting to survive, struck a deal with Hero Games and bought the Computer Gaming Rights to the Champions penicil and Paper RPG and retolled MUO into Champions Online. Personally, I think they were expecting that Microsoft would NEVER turn down a royalty fee; so they announced Xbox Console versions of the games.

Rumor has it, Microsoft was not pleased that Cryptic managed to make a Superhero MMO anyway; and even more dismayed that they also had a large beloved IP (Star Trek) MMO ready to go too - so after some discussion with Microsoft, Cryptic realized Microsoft was never going to allow a Cryptic MMO on the Xbox for a reasonable royalty fee - so the Xbox Console versions became Vaporware.

Shane Kim when interviewed said that the cancellation was down to the competitive market, and that while one current MMO (WoW) was successful, "everything else wouldn’t meet our level or definition of commercial success."

It should be noted that this particular stunt by them almost ended Cryptic as well, as pointed out here:

"That was a period of crisis for the company; it was definitely one of the times when Cryptic was two months away from shutting down. In 2007, desperate for cash after the collapse of the Marvel deal, Cryptic sold the rights to its City of Heroes and City of Villains games to NCSoft. That gave Cryptic enough money to continue development on what would become Champions Online, another superhero game."

Brian Bendis from Marvel also commented on the MUO issue, stating that:

"Well, you're talking to one of the executive producers of the ill-fated Marvel MMO that went away. I have my laptop here, and on it I have the "X-Mansion" level fully completed that only I and five other people have access to play. It's gorgeous and fantastic and no one will ever see it. So I feel bad, because I think that MMO was a phenomenal idea that was extremely well executed and it went away because some guy at Microsoft who we'll never know pulled the plug on it before it even got underway."

So, Star Trek Online succeeding on the PC and maybe later on the Playstation would be a major f--- you to Microsoft...

As Captain Kirk says in Star Trek Generations: "Sounds like fun!"

Just ordered it via eBay - managed to snag a GameStop pre-order version with the TOS-era Constitution*. :) Now it's just sitting out the long wait, as it makes it's way from Canada to the UK...
