librarything

Thanks for the link.

I have joined under the user name Zozette.

My collection is here

I have hundreds of books to add.

I find this much easier to use that a library program I bought a while back. I think I will probably pay for an upgrade for this one.

I have sent you a friend request, Pookha (under the name Zozette).

I got pissed when I hit the 200-book limit on the free version and never went back. Have they gotten rid of that?

No, it is still limited to 200 books. After that you get lifetime membership for as little as $19 (you can choose to give them more if you think it is worth it). You also can choose yearly membership. Once again you choose how much to pay to get yearly membership (from $1 to $20).

I just unpacked my books after 8 yrs of storage and got them out in a bookcase(well some of them). I was thinking that I should catalog them. Thanks for this link! I'm Cable99 over there.

I am the only one who has some of my books but they are mainly books about Tasmania.

I have joined the Trekbbs group. Only two members so far so it is slightly dull :)

The only quibble I have with librarything is that the form's a pain to fill in for books tha don't have ISBN codes. I'm a sucker for Oxfam second-hand bookshops (hey, who needs grocery money anyway?) so we have a nifty collection of old books. The upside is that I have several books which no one else on librarything has, like Miss Chicken, which makes me a very proud ubergeek.

I haven't updated librarything for over a year, at 3/4 of my books still aren't listed, but I'm "rumunj" if anyone's interested.

I have quite a few books that don't have ISBN but so far I have found them all at Librarythings by using the title and choosing the right place to look.

For example I have a copy of a book "Across Iceland" by W Bisiker. This book was published in 1902. My default search looks though Amazon.com (because I buy most of my books from them). Of course I couldn't locate this book on Amazon but when I selected the British Library I found it.

Another book "Iceland" by Mrs Disney Leith which was published in 1908, I located by telling Librarythings to look in the Library of Congress.

Needless to say no-one else has these books listed on Librarythings.

All this said I am a little annoyed that of the 28 Australian sources that I can search, the State Library of Tasmania isn't included though the University of Tasmania is. I had trouble finding one Tasmanian book. It wasn't listed as being the National Library of Australia, nor
the University of Tasmania but I finally located it in the State Library of New South Wales.

I think that the Living Social (Visual Bookshelf) app on Facebook is inadequate for my needs for the following reasons

1) It only search the books at Living Social and the Amazon sites whereas LibraryThings has over 600 different sources including many national libraries, museums etc.

This means that old/obscure books have to be entered manually on Living Socail but can usually be located on LibraryThings.

2) Living Social doesn't use Dewey numbers. I like to shelve my books by their Dewey number.

3) If you put you books into Lists at Living Social there is a limit of 250 books in a List. Librarythings Collections do not have such a limit.

4) Books cannot be tagged in Living Social.

5) You can use a barcode scanner with LibraryThings but not with Living Social.

6) You can use the Comments fields in LibraryThings to record if you have loaned a book, or torecord the condition of the book etc. You can also use the tag feature for loaned books.

These are only some of the differences between the two.

U think I would rather pay a $20 for a lifetime membership of Librarythings rather than use the more limited Living Social app.

i have been able to find everything so far by just putting in the title or in some cases title and author.
and using either amazon or library of congress to search in.

I have decided to pay for a membership tomorrow. I am still trying to decide whether to buy the barcode scanner from them at the same time. It is reasonably priced but I might have the bulk of my collection already on Librarythings before the scanner arrives.

I could use the barcode scanner when I get around to cataloguing my DVDs.

It is called the Cuecat is being sold by LibraryThings for $15. Details here. I gather these originally sold/given away by RadioShack for a different use but have since been adapted to be used to scan books.

I decided against buying one for the time being because I think I will have all my books done before it could arrive. It would take up to 2 weeks for it to reach Tasmania.

I would suggest that you read the CueCat guide before deciding whether to purchase or not.

I joined years ago, and even bought the lifetime membership. Unfortunately, at this point, I probably need to wipe the slate clean and start over because I've purged a ton of books from my home library, but also added a great many, but didn't keep LibraryThing current.

that is pretty much what i am doing now.
i first joined in 06 but life and other stuff got in the way.
but my books were getting so out of hand(ie getting tired of buying duplicates) i decided i needed to do something about it.

when i am done with adding everything i am taking the printed list and checking the collection.
that way i just cross stuff out i dont have any more and can make the edits online later.
