An Upcoming Remake Of "Total Recall" - Why?

They've run out of ideas hence the glut of remakes--and not even good remakes--of all sorts of tv shows/films--Friday the 13th, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, Karate Kid, Bionic Woman, Melrose Place, Rockford Files, Hawaii Five-O, Knight Rider, Star Trek XI etc.

I also think they are hoping to exploit the nostalgia but they failed to understand that the original was a unique combination of writing, the times, actors, chemistry etc that you can't recapture hence all the failed remakes. The only thing I've seen improved is the VFX but I'll take solid writing or characters over eye candy. So I would say to Hollywood quit resurrecting the dead and come up with your own new ideas instead of cribbing from more talented people.

In fact, more and more these days I'm finding that I would rather be watching an old tv series or film I've seen dozens of time than watching these poor and hollow films and tv shows coming out in swarms from Hollywood.

I think the "remake mania" has finally gone too far. :klingon:
You mean a hamfisted bastardization of a Philip K. Dick short story is getting another go?

Hey, why not! I'd rather see adaptions of other works, but this I'm fine with too.

I like the idea that the film's silly action theatrics are just the fever dreams of a deluded nobody who's dying on a bed; but mostly it's just not that great a movie.

Is it really a remake of Total Recall? If so, that's retarded. But if it's just another film adaptation of We Can Remember It For You Wholesale, there's nothing wrong with that.

I know that the movie has almost nothing to do with "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale" by Philip K. Dick, but despite that it's still one of the best distopian Sci-Fi films of all times.

I love this particular exchange between Ronny Cox and Arnold in the original:

--You're a goddamn hero, son.
--Fuck you!

You're right - it's an amazing movie :D.

Seriously, though, I think wanting to remake a film like "Total Recall" is pretty pointless. Yes, they still make action movies today and Sci-Fi action movies as well. But they really don't make 'em like they used to, quite literally, meaning everything that was fun about "Total Recall" and many other Arnie flicks just isn't going to be there.

Much of the appeal of the movie (for me, certainly) comes from realizing that you're watching a Hollywood movie about a guy 'living' a Hollywood movie. It's completely over the top and unrealistic because that's exactly how it would be. So apart from that 80's Arnie action flick charm I doubt that a remake would manage to play with that irony quite the way "Total Recall" does.

So, essentially, I'd be much happier if they were planning a new adaptation of "We can remember it for you wholesale". I'd find that a much more interesting prospect, to be honest.

Having said that, I don't really care either way. I have my "Total Recall" DVD close by, and I can pick up the short story whenever I feel like it. If the 'remake' is good, all the better. If not, not a problem.

"Total Recall" has so many great exchanges and quotes, really, augmented in no small way by Arnold's accent:

"Consida dis a divoace!"

"You've got a lot of nerve showing you're face around here." - "Look who's talking."

In addition, it's got some of Arnold's most amazing grunts and sounds.

Agree! WHY???? It was a great movie in its own right- and leaves you at the end without knowing for sure if the whole movie has been real or a dream. One of my favorite Ah-nold movies!:techman:

NO REMAKE!!!!!

That's one remake I really don't mind. I could see someone doing a completely different take on the material. David Lynch, Ridley Scott. Why not give Tim Burton a crack at it? He should do more sci fi. :D (Just kidding, don't kill me.)

But if it's just another film adaptation of We Can Remember It For You Wholesale, there's nothing wrong with that.

Now that would be a much better idea.

Only movies (or TV series) that should be remade are ones that were never good to begin with. I don't mean ones that some people hate, like "Firefly", but legitimately, universally despised ones.

^ If Shia LaBeof is in it I think the brain meltdown at the end of the film may be my own. Can't stand him.
