The Carbomite Maneveur

Fleet Captain
Discuss about this brilliant episode at least to me I really like the alien is like a child Balok and Kirk's bluff of and Bailey going nuts on the bridge anyway overall it's just a great episode anyway what are your thoughts?

[Theepio]

Oh, he's been encased in Corbomite. He should be quite well protected. Provided nobody fires on him, producing an reverse reaction of equal strength, destroying the attacker."

Isn't that the stuff Han Solo was frozen in?

You are thinking of Carbonite.

Although both substances are apparently only one letter apart in their own way. ;)

As for the episode, I am a big fan of "The Corbomite Maneuver". Kirk bluffing what seems to be a vastly greater power and winning, by calling what turns out to be calling it's own bluff. Love the episode overall, and as always, great character interaction and a real sense of the unknown. It's in my Top 10 favorite TOS episodes.

This represents the series opening theme voiceover at the beginning of each episode. It is the quintessential Star Trek.

I havent seen that episode. Honestly I ruined it for me cause I jusmped to Star Trek Next generation and then back to Star Trek Original Series.

If only I could travel back in time and fix that mistake.

God Damn it, if only.................

Corbomite is one of the best. Love the suspense. You can see the beginnings of how Kirk and Spock will eventually work together.

This was McCoy's first episode, and in retrospect, knwoing the friendship the character will have with Kirk, he seems unusually cruel, basically telling Kirk he's going to personally see to it that Kirk's career is completely ruined. Don't f*** with McCoy.

I loved this episode and loved the interaction between Kirk and McCoy. I also was fascinated with the mentor / student relationship between Kirk and Bailey. How he saw some of himself in Bailey and was pushing the guy too hard without realizing it. Bailey himself felt the need to heap more and more on himself.

However what really got me much later on in life was in this episode we saw the Captian come to realize this and ease off a little so the break didnt ruin a fine young officer....or pressure him into making a mistake...

I saw a parrell to this episode in the movie THE BEDFORD INCIDENT, a brilliant cold war film that has an almost similar setting. An American destroyer playing a dangerous cat and mouse game with a Soviet sub. The Bedford had a harsh taskmaster of a captian (Cpt. Finlander played by Richard Widmark) he too had a McCoy in his XO who he doesnt listen to as he presses a young officer too hard through out the hunt.

In the Bedford case we see what might have happened had Kirk not eased off Bailey and allowed him to grow into his own. Those of you who saw this movie will understand this.

At a Tense moment in the film Finlander says on his bridge
"If the Russian Fires One then the Bedford will Fire one!"

The overly tense desperate to please his captian Young Ensign only hears part of the Captain's statement and fearing making another mistake and fail his Captain then calls out 'Fire One" and launches an ASROC at the Soviet Sub which sets off the movie's very chilling climax.
(A must see actually)

I remebered thinking of 'The Corbomite Maneveur' when I saw the movie and only then did I see the dangers McCoy had been cautioning Kirk about.

This episode really ranks up there amongst my favorites of TOS. So much so its secondary story's message rang through to me even years later :)

This is one of my favorite episodes, partially because Bailey has what I consider the greatest freakout in television history in it.

Whenever I want to get a laugh out of my wife, and somebody's doing a countdown, I just say, "Awww...he's starting a COUNTdown."

Seriously, though, it's all about confronting fear and taking chances...something that we will always need to do.

I consider Bailey one of the most human characters in all of Star Trek. In most episodes, characters who set out to prove themselves actually end up proving they've "got what it takes." Here we have a character who not only wants to prove himself, but a Captain who's standing firmly behind him and seems personally invested in seeing Bailey make it -- and Bailey fails. I can't help but like the guy.

Funny episode:

*Balok's obsession with Tranya

*Bailey's sudden outbursts; and having a slight resemblance to Russell Johnson

Isn't Uhura wearing a yellow duty skirt in this episode? What is the fanon explanation for that?

Personally I think Uhura looks better in the gold than the red, Maybe just because of the gold color or because they were lighting her differently in that one episode. She seemed prettier

*Balok's obsession with Tranya
Well, Balok certainly enjoyed drinking tranya, but I don't know where you get the idea he was OBSESSED with the stuff.

It's funny seeing then-7-year-old Clint Howard wearing a bald skullcap, with his voice dubbed by Vic Perrin. Today, he still has the wonky teeth -- and he doesn't need the bald cap!

I don't know, but it was her first episode. I guess they just decided they liked red on her better.

Well, they could have shown the audience how she looked in blue...;)

It's a personal idea.

Too, he didn't seem to be interested in anything else until Kirk and landing party partook of the tranya.
