How much do you usually spend on a birthday gift?
And how much did you get from your parents when you were young?

Among friends we usually pool together, everyone gives 10 euro's and we buy gifts from that. For my folks I usually spend around 50-100 euro's. When I was young I usually got a present worth about 50 euro's.

Among friends? 20 to 50 bucks, depending on how close a friend, and if it's something they really need. I might spend more on a friend that I know can't afford something he or she really needs. For instance, I spent a little more on a gift for a friend who badly needed nice clothes for work--I gave her a 50 dollar gift card to my favorite store. My other friend, who is very well-off, had a 25 dollar game on her wishlist, so I got it for her. But I will spend more on her this year, as she has given me a lot of really nice things this year, and I know she doesn't often splurge on herself.

For my hubby, he's really, really cheap and gets mad if I spend too much. But I still try to make it something he'd really like. I might spend a bundle this year, as he really needs a decent jacket.

I only get gift cards, unless I am told exactly what gift I should get. Why should I make a guess? You can't go wrong with a gift card - then they can get what they want.

As a child, my parents only gave me one present. It was a potato. But that was okay because they told me it was a turtle. They said he was shy so he wouldn't come out of his shell.

I named him Tubby.

I miss that turtle.

It depends on what i'm buying and for whom, but if i have the money, i'll spend it. For my BFF's birthday last year, i spent well over $200 to get him a 120 GB Zune.

I can't really answer the poll, because I really don't have a set limit, and nor do I apply any limit equally between different people in my circle of acquaintances. However, for my best friend, I generally spend something in the order of £50 for birthday (and Christmas) presents. That's enough for an interesting bottle of wine or a small bit of silverware (his two preferred gifts).

When I was growing up, my parents set me a (rough) budget of £30 for birthday presents and £100 for Christmas. They gave me a choice of which event would have the higher budget and I picked Christmas... I never really valued birthdays as much as Christmas. I got a lot of stuff bought from me the rest of the year round though, but I remember planning in advance what I'd get with my "bonus" payments for my birthday and Christmas.

For most people, I spend about $50 bucks and I try to get several gifts, like a couple of books or books and a DVD or whatever. For my Brother's Birthday this week, I got a CD and a Wii game. The exceptions are my Niece and Nephew, who I have a tendency to spend far too much money on. :rommie:

I selected $20-30.

There are only four people I buy birthday presents for. There are two friends and my two youngest sons.I never spend more than $30 on the friends but I spend between $20 and $50 on my sons.

There is a few more people on my Christmas list but I only spend about $20 on them.

:guffaw:seriously laughed at that!

edit ~ see my location :)

I spent a hughly long day as a runner on a video film set, in lots of mud and lots of walking miles to get sandwiches and other crap. I earnt £100 and spent it on 2 tickets to Les Miserables on Man's birthday which I knew he really wanted to see.

I don't think it's about the money, I think it's about what you're prepared to do.

Son had no money for Mother's Day this year, but made me a card and gave me tokens for washing up, car wash, laundry etc! It meant more to me than another candle :)

But as for the question ~ Mans sister's birthday is next week and I don't plan on spending more than £10.

In my social circle, we don't buy gifts generally. We cook and throw parties or go out. Generally speaking, with the exception of the one remaining child, my family no longer exchanges gifts for any occasion, though my parents still give me a few small things in addition to cash.

When I was a kid? Well, I was an only child, so I got lots of gifts. On average at least 15 discrete presents for my birthday and 30 for xmas, probably about $500 worth for birthdays and twice that at xmas, I would guess. More if the main gift was really big like a computer or a car.

It's my birthday April 15th, so those of you who are high spenders I'll let you know my address via PM - just in case you feel like sending something my way. :shifty:

Happy Birthday, mimic.
