SyFy picks up WWE Smackdown

^Largely because it makes money which is more than I can say for a lot of their programming.

Canada's SPACE channel doesn't seem to have any problems airing honest-to-goodness current and classic sci-fi and fantasy TV. This is the model SyFy should be following, not the wrestling and reality network with crappy made-for-TV movies thrown in for good measure.
I wish that we could get Space in the states. It puts SyFy to shame.

It might be losing money, but the problem is that the CRTC actually regulates the licenses they give to operators.

For example, up here The History Channel got in trouble for running CSI:NY re-runs. Their excuse was that since Gary Senise's character's wife died in 9/11, it's a "historical drama". The CRTC didn't buy it.

God I wish the Sci-Fi Channel had just been completely rebranded sometimes... It's like slowly watching a family member slipping into dementia all over again.

Agony.

They need to get whoever is in charge of USA programing to pitch in and help Siffy out.

Honestly, just movie Warehouse 13, Eureka, SGU, & Caprica to USA all together.

I've forgotten if they have any other decent original programming.

Looking at that list, though, it doesn't look like they produce much of their own programming.

Given the debates over whether or not the likes of Caprica and SGU should move from Fridays, the higher proportion viewers those shows have who watch shows via alternate means (DVR, legal and illegal downloading, online streaming etc) and the fact that all this really does is add one extra hour of WWE programming to the channel I don't really see why this is such a big deal.

Smackdown is a proven brand, it makes money, money that can be reinvested in original programming. The cost per hour of television is very low because, unlike a one hour drama, they have alternate revenue streams - tickets, merchandise, PPVs etc - that make more money than TV does. They're paying $30m for 52 two hour episodes a year ? That's ridiculously cheap.

It only got kicked off the CW in the first place because Dawn Ostroff doesn't want boys shows on her girls network.

this is the end of the last vestige of the old Scifi Channel that brought us Farscape, SG-1, and Battlestar seasons 1 and 2.

On the one hand..."normal" TV stations leave Friday night as a dead zone for things like wrestling, so it means they're acting more "professional" my putting their stuff on Tuesday night.

The problem is....it means they're competing head-to-head with the strongest night of television.

The whole point of "Scifi Friday" is that it wasn't competing against other things: that's why Scifi Sunday didn't work during BSG season 3 (or maybe that's just because they changed the timeslot of an established show, confusing the audience...)

well, at least they're smart enough to put ALL of their original programming, like four hours of stuff, back to back on Tuesday to make it as strong of a night as possible, and moreover, try to get spillover ratings.

But there's nothing on TV anymore: by the final season of BSG I'd already switched to Dollhouse, and now that Dollhouse is over and Lost is ending, televised Scifi in general is in a bad spot:

I just didn't get involved with Caprica, and Stargate Universe is godawful.

That leaves Chuck, Fringe, Smallvile, and Supernatural.

I hate Chuck, and its too late to get into Supernatural much less Smallville.

the V remake will probably be canceled.

So I guess that leaves us with just "Fringe" now, and of course we finally get a new season of Doctor Who?

But I need to catch up on "Fringe"

either way....there isn't really much "scifi" I need to watch on the "scifi channel"

even like, TV anime isn't that great: Adult Swim is...better than it was in 2008 but going through a slow period. I understand that FMA was one of their best shows, but they're running the remake series now and I"m a tad bored. More Shonen Jump crap after that too.

Really though, "SyFy Channel?" My local convention even had a panel on "Scifi vs SyFy" about their schedule, and it just doesn't look promising.

I don't think Caprica can strike gold twice, particularly because if BSG is any indication, the longer they are on the less of a clear idea they'll have about what they're doing.

^A stunning meeting of the minds.

Hermiod is right in that it's "just another hour of WWE programming" but it's also another nail in the coffin for Syfy with regard to the content of it's programming.

Personally, I don't give two fucks about this; as I've said here (or elsewhere, can't remember...) I get the overall irritation from people ... but at the same time, Skiffy's got to get its money from someplace. I guess my perspective is, it's better it be from some show I won't watch on a night I'm not home watching TV anyway than to cancel a show I do watch.

Well, there's a bigger picture that's being painted by the network hochos. This summer, they'll launch a Thursday primetime reality block...if it performs, they'll surely want to continue it year round, so that's Wed and Thurs assimilated by the reality borg, and now Smackdown's added to Friday. Three nights lost to non genre programming. Add their junky Sat night movie franchise-which I'll admit (from a programming standpoint), makes for a pretty nice flow from night to night. That leaves Sundays for movies, Mondays may continue stripping 4 episodes of an older show, and Tues, for the originals. Actual genre shows will be further relegated to fringe hours, while other 'stuff' dominates the lineup.
Yes, it does make perfect business sense, and no doubt, will succeed. But it is depressing to see the direction they've been heading in, and come to the realization, that like so many other channels that have gone off reservation, if you will, the little network we rooted for and championed to 'do us proud', is turning into a nightmare, one time slot at a time.

Sigh...

Well, that's what the Sci-Fi network started with when it debuted back in 1992 or so. Then it got handed off to Bonnie Hammer; who, it seems reallydoesn't care for Science Fiction (imagine that).
