Clark knows how Tess operates. She's a bully. She enjoys threatening people too much, so turnaround is fair play.
That's not Superman. Period.

If you don't know why that's not Superman, you really don't understand the character at all, or why a lot of people can't stand his depiction in Smallvile.

And what is more clearer is that this incarnation of SUPERMAN isn't the same as any that has come before. Thats the biggest disconnect I think some of the anti-fans of this show have. The same issue with TREK XI and "Spock kissing Uhura".

Its....a...DIFFERENT...version....

Yeah, she could have just, you know, ASKED Ollie and company to help. There's no reason to make someone an enemy right away when you don't have to.

A very valid point, one my wife made while we where watching. Definitely not the best way to recruit super-heroes that you want to help you battle an upcoming alien invasion.

I finally decided to vote Kal-El. This ep just didn't work for me as well as it did for most of you, with the exception of the scene between Douchman and the Chlovage after her rescue.

I DO like the speculation about the Red Queen. That would indeed be a cool, interesting twist.

Yes, but Superman's core personality is a "sacred cow" of the character. If you change that, he's just another run of the mill superhero with basic powers. It's Superman's boy scout nature and heart of gold that puts him above the rest and makes him the rolemodel of everyone around. And we know that's who he is because everyone from the future marvels at him for that very reason.

He's never been the type of use fear to get what he needs or wants. That's Batman and Green Arrow. Not Superman, and it's certainly nor Clark Kent who's an even bigger boy scout if that were even possible.

^As I have repeatedly pointed out, Tom Welling is not willing to play that character. He plays Clark Kent, not Superman. He's not willing to wear the glasses as Clark, he's not willing to wear the costume. He's not Superman.

^ Also, this has been part of his character arc this year. He has grown more cynical and darker in how he goes about. The producers have even admitted as such as labeling this season as "Clark's Darkest Hour".

Yep the producers have indeed commented that this season is running on the theme of "Clark's Darkest Hour" and it pretty much started from the events of last season's finale. Indeed most of the good guy characters have been exploring their dark sides this season not just Clark. Also some more interesting tid bits about "Salvation" the season finale were revealed by TV Guide and Ausileo apparently
Clark receives a gift of some kind from someone

TV shows like Smallville and FlashForward should be prohibited from using chess as a thematic or dramatic device unless they employ technical advisors.

From a purely chess perspective, the Smallville episode was painful to watch. Early in the episode, we saw a chessboard with pawns on the back rank--a clearly impossible position in any game, since pawns do not move backwards. And then later on, we could see that the chessboard in Amanda Waller's HQ was also set up wrong. You could tell because there should always be a white square in each player's lower right corner. These TV shows should stick to checkers, a game they might be able to comprehend.

Do you think your average storm trooper knows how to install a toilet?

I suspect that Checkmates base must have been large if it's on par with as FBI office, and EVERYroom was painted and interrior decorated to such an obtuse theme? But seriously? How do they suspect to keep the name of their organization top secret if you can work it out by feeling for a theme?

Batman II needs to sue.

I don't know anything about chess myself but what if the configuration on the board was meant to be incorrect? I know that might seem infeasible but it's still a possibility.

But then it would not be real chess. If Waller's chessboards were meant to be wrong, then the apparent mistakes should have been part of the story.

Waller still isn't fat enough. Her silhouette was too damn thin.

Speculation on who the Red Queen is...

Martha Kent perhaps? She is a U.S. Senator and Amanda made it very clear she was working for the government. Would be an interesting twist.
Good one. Never thought of that.

I also liked Clark breaking Chloe out of Checkmate.
Yeah, that was cool.

The Lost season 6 promo used chess very well.

The show, while still good, ain't what it used to be. Its long lost its way. :(
Yeah, I've had my fill too. I was actually falling asleep during this episode. Like I said last week, we need Lex and Perry White in recurring roles next year. Maybe Darkseid too. Are we working up to that?

^ My theory is that we could see Darkseid in the finale or at least Apokolips and season ten will deal with him. Its just a theory though.

yeah... the last second of the last episode of the season... he'll be like jack nicholson sticking his head thru the bathroom door saying.... Here's Apokolips...
and that's after supies already off'd zod....

I was just thinking about something. Many people are having trouble with how dark this version of Clark Kent/Superman is. How will people take it if Nolan's mentoring of the new Superman film brings us a dark Superman?
