Companion/Companion relationships

Mr. Sin

Commander
Much has been made of the Doctor/Companion relationships, especially in the new series. But what of companion/companions?

In the novels, it's made clear that Ian and Barbera married and lived happily ever after. The novel of the Crusade (One of the best novelizations IMO) also implies a romantic relationship between the two.

Ben and Polly seemed to be very close. She did almost pick him up in a bar, after all....

Mike Yates sort of had a flirtatious relationship with Jo Grant, and it's kind of implied that's part of what let to Mike's downfall in THE GREEN DEATH and INVASION OF THE DINOSAURS. Interestingly, I believe Richard Franklin is gay in real life.

Nyssa and Adric seemed kind of close a bit.

In the new series there was of course initially Rose and Mickey, but Rose seemed to drift away from Mickey, and Mickey later hooked up with Martha, according to END OF TIME. "Smith and Jones" indeed.

Well Mickey Smith and Martha Jones got married at somepoint after they both went travelling with the Doctor.

i bet Jack boinked Rose at some point. Adric was too much of a nerd boy. i bet the Doctor was all over Nyssa and Tegan and, like, 'fuck off maths boy. go and read in the library!'

boinked? If you're referring to sexual intercourse, I've never heard it called that before

clearly you either never watched Buffy or weren't paying attention. Faith says of Buffy 'so you boinked the undead' referring to her 'sleeping with' Angel.

"Mondas Passing" in one of the BBC Short Trips books deals with Ben and Polly.

Nyssa and Adric seemed kind of close a bit.
I think Adric somewhat idolized her, but she didn't seem interested.

Nyssa and Tegan, on the other hand...

I could picture Steven/Dodo or Jamie/Zoe.

Fans like to put Sarah Jane and Harry together, but I just can't see that.

And don't forget your swimming trunks ;)

I still think there's loads of potential for a companion/companion romance in the new series.

I agree, I can't see Sarah being remotely interested in a man who insists on calling her 'old girl' like she's his aunt or something!

LOL! Nice. :techman:

Agreed. I always assumed Harry was gay, anyway.

Allyn, I like the idea of Tegan and Nyssa! I don't know why it never struck me. Guess back then I just assumed Nyssa dug Adric. But, now that I think back on their relationship, I can absolutely see it. Tegan's definitely the man in that relationship. Ah! And neither left because of falling in love with some man.

Turlough was, without a doubt in my mind, gay. Or so alien that he had no heterosexual vibe whatsoever. Year of Hell, please don't tell Mark Strickson I said he has no manly vibe. ;)

I think Ace would have fallen for the 9th Doctor. But, as for another companion....Jamie? Although, Jamie was into Peri in The Two Doctors. That, or he just knows to get a kiss in on a pretty girl when he can.

Captain Jack would have bagged every companion ever. Except Mel. Even Jack has limits.

I think The Brig might have tried to get into the pants of Harriet Jones. Or maybe even Jackie, depending on his kink-level, and their relative ages when they meet. But, I'm drifting outside of 'definable' companions.

Other than that, dunno. :techman:

Ace was sleeping with Glitz.... under age too according to the novels....

Like Jacqueline Rayner wrote in the excellent Wolfsbane, I think that Harry was in love with Sarah Jane, but she didn't reciprocate. Poor guy.

I've always been a believer in Tegan/Turlough.

It seemed to me they tried to make a bit of a spark between the two early on, but it didn't work out. Part of the problem being there wasn't a lot of chemistry between Adric and anyone else. I wouldn't have minded seeing that angle explored a bit more.

The same goes for Jamie and Victoria. Apparently some of their (now lost) stories made it pretty unambiguous that Jamie carried a flame for her that she declined to acknowledge.

I think you can count on one hand the number of times a companion has "pulled a Kirk" and gotten involved with someone romantically - other than the Doctor - during the course of a single adventure/episode. Rose got the hots for Adam in "Dalek" and for Jack in "Empty Child" but as both those guys became companions (if only briefly for Adam) they don't count.

The novels are another story altogether. I seem to recall Ace becoming somewhat Kirk-ish in some of the Virgin New Adventures books, and Chris Cwej, a later-era McCoy companion, even got involved in a gay relationship (in a novel written by some guy with the initials RTD...). The Tenth Doctor audio drama The Nemonite Invasion was a bit surprising as it had Donna Noble falling for a soldier during WWII.

"Fury from the Deep."

I think it's Happy Endings (the one where Benny gets married) where Ace lists her sexual exploits.

Chris Cwej, a later-era McCoy companion, even got involved in a gay relationship (in a novel written by some guy with the initials RTD...).
He also has a nascent relationship with Nyssa in Lance Parkin's Cold Fusion. It blows up spectacularly, however; it was all part of the seventh Doctor's plan to manipulate the fifth Doctor and his companions into dealing with the Ferutu.

Alex

Was that before or after he knocks up a teenage girl in Happy Endings?

I'm slightly worried that I didn't think it when I was fifteen, then again I was probably only about 11 when they were on screen. I knew I liked Tegan, but the thought of Tegan and Nyssa? I was a touch too innocent for that

I got the sense that Jamie was always up for whatever girly action he could get. Unfortunately, that was usually nothing. I've only seen one story with Jamie & Victoria in it ("The Tomb of the Cybermen") and I can certainly see Jamie loving her from afar. However, I think she was a little too stuck up to give this rugged Highlander the time of day.

I was going to mention that one. I love that book.

I recall the BBC novel "Illegal Alien" where Ace had some serious flirtations with a handsome young private eye during the London Blitz. Later, they were reunited in the novel "Loving the Alien." At that point, he didn't look quite as hunky to her anymore because he was 20 years older and she wasn't.

i bet Jack boinked Rose at some point.

Definately. I'm pretty sure 9, Rose and Jack were rocking the Tardis come nightfall.

Yeah. That slightly sordid, orgy-waiting-to-happen atmosphere is one of the reasons why I never liked that combination. It's also why I'm glad that the show was on the BBC, not Cinemax After Dark.

There are some Nyssa femslash combinations that I might find intriguing but Tegan never did anything for me.

Also, you know, she was from the 1860s. (Though you wouldn't know it with those skirts...)
