Upcoming Region 2 DVD Releases

Just wondering what the next Region 2 DVD releases are? Is there a site that covers this? From what I can tell from Amazon.co.uk the next set to be released is the Myths and Legends set containing 'The Horns of Nimon', 'The Time Monster' and 'Underword' at the end of the month. What's the next serial(s) in line after that?

Thanks for that! Can't wait to finally get another 2nd Doctor (yeah, new classic Who for me). Also haven't seen the Kamelion episodes since they first aired and I used to watch religiously each day after school.

As did I. For me that was late 70's through to mid 80's. Those were the days...

I've already got The Dominators sitting on my shelf, but it is of course a con - 2 VCDs sitting in a dvd case with a fanmade (though utterly authentic-looking) cover. It'll be nice to have a proper copy. Only an average story though, imo.

ETA - On the subject of fanmade covers, it's amazing sometimes how close some of them end up being to the official releases when they finally come out. The old cover I had for The War Games is so much like the real one it's uncanny. You'd think the fan who did it must've had ESP or something. Same colours, same elements. Same background, the Doctor in the middle, with the War Cheif on his left and the timelords on his right. Roman chariot charging, the whole lot. All of this about 3 or 4 years prior to the official release.

It is a shame that I think all the available good Troughton stories have now been done. I couldn't stand The Dominators when I saw it on TV, and The Krotons (which I don't think has been released yet) was sort of the Troughton equivalent of Hartnell's The Web Planet (you know, the episode that's treated sort of like the embarrassing cousin). Is Seeds of Death available? That one might be still coming.

Hopefully they'll go back and VidFIRE Tomb of the Cybermen for a new release at some point.

Alas, that is not so. It is missing 2 of its 6 parts (and so is a prime candidate for animation).

ETA oh it is only 6. For some reason I thought it was 8. So I fixed it! *sneaky grin*

The Ice Warriors is missing 2,3 of 6, unless you know different ;)

Well ... damn wikipedia anyway. :P :guffaw:

I often hear of The Ice Warriors being mixed up with Seeds of Death, which might be what happened here...

Sad part is the list (Ice Warriors error notwithstanding) proves my point that the last 2 complete Troughtons left available for release are two of my least-favorites of not only Troughton, but the whole of Doctor Who. :(

Fortunately there are audios of the other stories, and fan-made restorations, and maybe someday someone will do an animated restoration of a few episodes. But that's still not quite the same. I enjoyed the animated Invasion episodes quite a bit, but I'd trade them in tomorrow for a copy with two half-decent prints of the missing episodes.

Funny thing about both the Krotons and Seeds of Death, they're the first serials by Robert Holmes, who would later go on to write many of the classic series's best stories (Although with still a few stinkers here and there)

Although not perfect, I kind of liked the directing style in Seeds of Death. Having one of the scenes from the POV of the Ice Warrior, for example.

Seeds of Death is by Brian Hayles. You're probably thinking of "The Space Pirates".

Actually I agree, The Seeds of Death is very good - though the Ice Warriors have less individual personality than in their debut, and come across as basically interplanetary gangsters rather than the noble warrior race, the direction is fresh and interesting as you say, and also the whole approach of the story is more matter-of-fact in its view of the future. The people who run T-Mat are just people doing their jobs - they go to work, they joke and flirt with each other - it makes it seem more everyday and normal than the usual depictions of future societies. Compare that with, indeed, The Space Pirates, which is all about wearing silly helmets and being self-consciously in the future - except for Milo Clancey, who's great.

What? No love for The Krotons...?

There's very litle wrong with The Krotons, aside from the bottom half of the Kroton costumes. Troughton's in top form, the sound is creepy, the location work looks good... Not a classic by any standard, but very watchable.

The Seeds Of Doom (Fourth Doctor) is confirmed for 2011. It has Camp Freddie from the Italian Job and Boycie from Only Fools & Horses in it!

That's great to hear - I haven't seen that story in years. I do wish they'd get round to The Face of Evil though - that's the only story from Season Fourteen as yet unreleased!
