Awkward

Ok, not sure if this has been raised before, but I thought I would just get it off my chest. In (I think it's) "Outcast", the epsiode where we meet the genderless J'naii (love the concept of the species and would love to see them back), Soren asks Riker about the human reproductive systems. At this point he becomes all shy and flustered at the question. Now Riker is by far the D's resident womaniser, so surely he, a 24th Century man, would have no problem answering the question honestly and frankly. Why then does he turn into a moron who can only speak of "snips and snails and puppy dog tails"?

They were having that conversation over dinner, I seem to recall. Maybe the timing of the question took him by surprise and he floundered. I think if Soren had broached the question when he'd been more prepared for it his answer might have been more... biological.

Because this was on TV in the 1980's. :)

I agree, Riker strikes me as the kind of guy who would have no problem explaining that to someone, drawing some illustrations on a napkin, and pulling down his pants as a visual aid. :)

:guffaw: this thread is called AWKWARD, but a REAL awkward moment in TNG was when Data made a comment to Worf about his nipples getting hard, in INS.

That wasn't awkward that was stupid.

For me "awkward" would be when Troi -being used as a run-off emtion dumping ground" in "Man of the People" was... "enjoying an evening" with nameless yellow-shirt in her quarters when Riker comes up, rings the chime, and wants to get with Troi to do their umpteenth round of "Crew Evaluation Reports." The guy, post-coitus, kind of stammers to his superior officer and bolts as quickly as he can.

That never happened!!

Firmer breats are not the same as hard nipples, and they imply very different things. Firmer breasts suggests youth and beauty, while the other....you know:vulcan:

And Trekker's right. Data's remark was stupid, not awkward.

easily the most awkward moment i have ever witnessed in tng is in encounter at farpoint when riker meets wesley for the first time and, as he's leaving, says "see you on board, wesley" and then makes this face:

I kinda figured that in the next 400 years, there would be some shifts in morality (?) in that certain conventions like swearing, discussing sex, etc. would become more or less taboo over time. For example, in Amok Time, Kirk was clearly a little shy about discussing Vulcan biology with Spock. But now, 300 years earlier, there's much more "hard core" subject matter shown on children's shows.
Probably much the same with Riker in that episode.
