I could easily live without television. Could I live without my computer and the Internet -- now that's the real question.

Not as long as Dexter and Lost are on TV, I can't.

When they're both gone, I'll probably be so mad, I'll throw my TV out the window.

Yes. I watch like 95% of my tv on my computer. The only things I actually watch on tv is local news and live sports (and even the latter I watch increasingly on livestreams on my computer).

eta: and I actually know people who've given up on tv - not as some kind of elitist statement, but because there's nothing on tv they can't get on the internet.

My wife and I turned our cable off over 3 years ago and never watch network tv unless it's football season. The only time the tv comes on is when we want to watch a dvd, which usually only happens on the weekends though occasionally we'll watch a dvd after we go to bed. So when we watch something it's because we actively want to watch and enjoy it, it's not something done just to waste time.

The reason we turned off the cable is we found ourselves sitting in front of the tv, mindlessly watching things we really had no interest in, just to kill time. It didn't seem healthy to me and when I suggested we cancel the cable and keep the tv off most of the time she instantly agreed. We've yet to regret it. We're much more active now and we both read quite a bit (though I always have).

By "watching TV" I mean scheduled broadcast programming and all with the usual commercials.

Well if this is the criteria that we're following, then answering this question is easy. I dropped my cable service about six weeks ago. I don't have a digital tuner or converter box, so the only thing I get on my TV when I turn it on is static. So I've already given up traditional TV viewing. I follow 2 current programs that I watch online (albeit, with "limited commercial interruption brought to you by...."). I also watch some things on DVD. I have a very healthy DVD collection.

I don't watch any series any more, so from that standpoint I'd be fine. But I still find TV to be the best way to view live events. I really can't imagine trying to watch something like 9/11 unfold or certain sporting events any other way.

I watch very little TV but watch DVDs instead.

When I do watch TV I generally only look at the ABC i.e. Australia's national public broadcaster which is a non-commercial station but my viewing on that is mainly limited to Midsomers Murders (and a couple of other British crime shows), Dr Who, Torchwood and some nature docomentaries.

Now that the weather is so nice (75 baby!!!) I can easily not watch TV. it's in the winter I watch a lot of TV and DVDs.

I dumped TV when I gave up on Enterprise early in Season three. I'm still alive so I guess the answer is, "Yes!"

I have the TV on the background almost continuously while I'm at home, but probably am only actually watching it for around 5% of that time. I like the background noise though...

Ditto. The first thing I do when I get in is to turn the tele on ~ I need noise with me.
But as well I'm usually on-line, cooking, housework, reading the paper etc.

I did have a great night at my Man's house though recently without a tv and we found a great radio station and just sat, drank wine and chatted ~ was really nice.
Not sure we could do it everynight though :)

I haven't owned a TV in years. I'm perfectly happy w/ my 24" iMac, TNG and half a dozen movies on DVD, and a cheap Netflix subscription (one DVD at a time). I watch maybe one DVD a week. I'd rather be on-line or reading or...
