Late observation

Lieutenant Commander

I haven't been on here but a few times since the movie released so this may have been addressed.

Regarding the appearance of the Klingons in the deleted scenes. Could J.J. have been playing it safe by putting the Klingons in prison guard 'uniforms'? This way he didn't have to commit to his vision of a Klingon until he was ready. This could also explain the the decision to just delete the entire sequence.

Thoughts?

There are pictures (somewhere) that show what the actors looked like underneath those helmets. The new Klingon make up was only partially done (for the areas visble) but still managed to come off as very bad-ass and wolf-like, to me. During the commentary, Abrams said he loved the coats the Klingon guards wore in that scene, and specifically stated that they should bring them back for future appearances. I have a feeling that if we see Klingons in the sequel, the "storm trooper" variant will resemble the guys in the helmets on Rura Penthe.

I was under the impression the Klingons looked the way they did (which was awsome, but I would have had the one who interrogated Nero in a modern version of the TOS Klingon gear as seen in the Nero comic) so they could be convincingly and easily mass-produced in CG. Let's hope for a full-scale ground invasion next film!

So, to judge by those makeup photos... in the JJverse, Klingons don't have a 3-D field of vision, because their brow ridges come down right in front of their eyes? Seems like that would make them particularly inept fighters.

It actually wouldn't affect vision, since one eye sees what the other one can't. Like how you can stick your finger in front of your face and still see past it.

A finger, sure... but try holding three or four fingers over the bridge of your nose, and tell me it doesn't obstruct your vision.

I'm not saying it's bad makeup -- it looks pretty sharp. (And I'm sure if the design had extended to what's under the helmet, there'd be more of a resemblance to Klingons as we know them.) I'm just saying that in evolutionary terms, it seems like a very unlikely development.

Maybe Klingon eyes work differently than Human ones. *shrug*

e: Maybe their brow ridge creates a localized gravitational field, thus bending incoming light around the ridge into their eyes. This must have been their inspiration for cloaking devices.

I like it. I like all of it. The Klingons from TNG and the non-TUC movies were all ugly motherhubbards. Just a bunch of shit slapped without any rhyme or reason. Glue on a nose. Glue on the ridges. Stick on some evil eye-brows and a black wig. And voila! You're a badass Klingon warrior, just don't damage your face during the fight or else your forehead and nose will fall right off.

The manipulated browline on these Klingon unifies their features and makes them look complete. They look threatening, animalistic and predatory, but not stupid. In the deleted scene, you have Victor Garber's prison warden trying to make a deal with Nero instead of just torturing and killing him. I like these guys already and they haven't even officially appeared on screen. My hope is that in sequel, we get at least one sporting a caesar-cut like in TOS.

The iris is noticeably bigger in the bottom left photo in that set. Looks like dark contact lenses to me. Thoughts?

Klingons don't need to see you to kill you. They can track you down just by smelling your fear or hearing your pathetic cries for mercy.

I like the helmets, but the makeup looks more like a Neanderthal to me than a Klingon. They do look tough though, and I would enjoy seeing a large ground force, that would be awesome! Make Klingons intimidating again, please, JJ? Glory to the empire!:klingon:

So no change then?

Dude.

Close one eye.

With the other, look at the bridge of your nose.

Notice, you can't see around it.

That's what the other eye is for.

They have two eyes pointing the same direction, spaced about one eye width apart: ergo they have stereoscopic ("3-D") vision. The only obstruction relative to a typical human is how much the brow overhangs and how the bridge of the nose sticks out farther. The former would slightly affect how far up you can see without tilting your head, and the latter is really only a concern if you've lost one eye.
