Family Guy/American Dad/The Cleveland Show

Family Guy "peaked" for me in seasons 3-4. From Season 5-present every other episode is either good or horrible with a few excellents tossed in. That said the last two weeks have been shockingly good.

American Dad is consistently good but never reaches the same "highs" that Family Guy occasionally does. It's more interesting but less funny.

The Cleveland Show? Stupidest Idea Ever. Watched the pilot and am happy forgetting it exists.

You know, when you look past the crude animation and toilet humour, South Park is actually one of the most intelligent shows on television.

I still watch Family Guy. It's funny sometimes, and even when it's not all that funny it's not boring.

I think there will always be a slot in my viewing schedule for "notable prime time animation". I love cartoons.

I think South Park does topicality better than Family Guy, and it's the better written of the two shows in general. I like the animation style of Family Guy though and I think Seth's voice work is awesome. It's amazing that he's able to voice so many characters, and not just voice them, but make them iconic. Who doesn't know who Stewie is? Quagmire? Brian?

Don't really follow American Dad and The Cleveland Show but catch them from time to time. Just seems like more of the same. A 1/2 hour of MacFarlane a week is enough for me.

Yeah, it's quite sophisticated beneath its aggressive crudeness. One of my favourite shows on TV.

Family Guy is a show that occasionally produces some clever pop culture riffs, but as a show overall it doesn't do anything for me. American Dad was better in terms of story the few episodes from the first season I saw, but I lost track of it. The Cleveland Show is essentially Family Guy with a smarter main character.

I wouldn't say that. TV's gotten pretty smart with cable and such, and South Park is obvious.

It's definitely a lot smarter than Family Guy, but since Family Guy's whole shtick is stupid humour that isn't saying much.

If I turn off my brain, I can watch all three.

FG has spent too much time portraying Seth McFarlane's view of the world. I may not be a religious or a highly political person myself, but the constant bashing of both subjects turns me off. It's not done smartly, it's done more in the hammer over the head kind of manner.

TCS has it's moments, I love Tim the Bear. However, as has been previously said, it's a Family Guy copy, right down to the talking baby. I watch it as a placeholder between Simpsons and FG.

I haven't seen an American Dad episode since the futuristic apocalypse episode where Stan and Jesus team up to save Francine. I loved that episode, but again, it's a Family Guy clone, right down to talking pet.

Seth McFarlane, stop trying to push our buttons and using the same formula, maybe people would take you seriously.

this does not really apply to American Dad, but why is the talking animals on Family Guy & The Cleveland show are in no way seen as something specail.

We clearly see that for the most part this ability is unique to them, yet they hold down jobs, go about day to day life, even have relationships with humans, who seem totally unphased by the notion of a talking dog, or talking bear.

Why are people not more amazed by Brian or the two bears on The Cleveland Show?

and is it possible im over thinking this?

I'd say your over thinking it, much like with Stewie being a baby, it's been hinted, that as far as Brian goes anyways, people don't completely notice that he is a dog. I'm pretty sure I can recall an episode where he points out that he is a dog, and the person he was talking to was completely baffled by this. Like I said, it's similar to Stewie and that many times, they simply ignore what he says becuase he's a baby, or for some reason they don't "see" that he is a baby; again the situation of it being pointed out and someone just being baffled by it.

I watch all three shows when they are on, I probably like Family Guy better and still say Cleavland wouldn't have been my spin off choice, but...the show makes me laugh. American Dad is funny to, maybe not laugh out loud, but I continue to watch.

I like Family Guy and American Dad. I find Cleveland Show a little dull. South Park is my favorite amoung all of these.

That sounds like the one where he and Stewie end up on the farm where Brian was born. He knocks on the door and says something like "Remember me? It's your old dog, Brian!" and the farmer says "Which one were you?" Brian gives him an incredulous look and says "...I was the one who could talk." Good stuff.

I think South Park's production plays a role in it's topicality. I read that they can pretty much turn out a episode in a couple of weeks (the animation style and the computer software allows them to turn out an episode pretty quickly)

To say that South Park is "smarter" than Family Guy is a stretch IMO. I doubt that any average person who saw "The Tale of Scrotie McBoogerballs" would find anything "smart" about it (in fact, I think my mom would have literally been vomiting). Besides, those guys smack you upside the head with a spiked baseball bat with their opinions. To me, both shows are pretty obvious, and while funny, not really all that smart (although I certainly appreciate what Stone and Parker are saying 90% of the time).

Other than that, I have a hard time comparing the two shows. Although both are silly, stupid humor, they're pretty different animals. I love them both though.

I've got to pick up that latest volume of Family Guy so I can see "Not All Dogs Go To Heaven" again. Having the TNG cast was pretty awesome. :bolian:

Not from that ep, but the best Trek/Family Guy line:

Picard to Worf: "Oh, get a sense of humor Rocky Dennis."

I haven't watched FG or AD in years, and I only watched one episode of The Cleveland Show when I saw that David Lynch has a character on the show now. Honestly, the show was so horrible, I don't think I'll be tuning back.

I watch all three. I think each subsequent series has been worse than the previous. I stil like Family Guy but it's definitely not what it was. American Dad has its moments but IMO never quite topped Family Guy in its prime. Cleveland Show has its moments as well but also seems a blatant rip-off of Family Guy, only the guy ripping off Family Guy is the guy who created both.

I caught the latest Family Guy episode (IIRC, something about Stewie being in a coma, due to Chris and Meg's mishap)....and I thought it was one of the funniest episodes in a long time.

Seriously? I usually like Family Guy well enough, but this one did absolutely nothing for me. The latest South Park though.. I rofl'd. :)

Yeah, I actually watched it again during a repeat.

Actually all the Stewie scenes were hilarious, IMO, and the Brian scenes were pushing it...i.e. 'nudge-nudge, wink-wink'...

FG lost me as a viewer some time ago. I might watch reruns on local TV, but the new stuff... Well, ever since the relaunch, I think it's been lousy. The humor's gotten very nasty.
